2015-16 College Football Preview: BIG 12

Last year was a difficult year for the BIG 12. Even though they had two playoff contenders in TCU and Baylor, the conference isn't considered as difficult as other conferences like the SEC, PAC-12, and BIG 10. That ended up leading to TCU and Baylor both finishing the regular season with only one loss and both teams battling for a playoff spot.

Who actually got the playoff spot though?

Neither one.

Why?

Because the BIG 12 doesn't have a conference championship and people will constantly look down at the conference until they add one. Did I mention that this year could be a long year for the BIG 12 as well? Let's take a look.......

THE Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable: Female NBA Coach, MLB Trade Deadline, MLB Hall of Fame, NHL Expansion

In this edition of THE Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable, Dustin James, Steve Cook, and myself discuss a female NBA head coach, the MLB trade deadline, the 2015 MLB Hall of Fame class, and a potential new NHL team.

Would a female coach succeed in the NBA?

Dustin James: Yes, but under the right circumstances. I don't think a female could come into the NBA and lead a team full of young men and make them successful (then again, there are very few male coaches who can do that as well). Men just don't work that way. It's no secret that males are a very immature and stubborn species. I think young NBA players would have a hard time with a female as a head coach because not only would they not be used to it, but they would also probably view the whole thing as a joke and it would all turn really ugly, really quick.

However, if you were to plant a female head coach on a team like San Antonio....that would more than likely find a way to work itself out. A team that is full of mature veteran guys would probably have no trouble accepting a female as a head coach as long as she came in qualified for the job. There are other circumstances where it could work to. Let's say if someone like LeBron James all of a sudden decided he wanted Becky Hammon as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, I'm betting rest of the team would be fine with it. Like I said earlier, under the right circumstance, you can make it work.

Steve CookRight now? I don't think so. It's one thing for Becky Hammon to successfully coach a Spurs summer league team consisting of rookies & young players that'll listen to anybody to keep their spot on the roster, it's another thing for a woman to coach a team with veteran NBA players that have been around the block, think they know it all and barely even listen to their male head coach. Could you imagine Kobe Bryant's reaction if a woman tried to give him advice on his jump shot? I think 5-10 years down the road when more women get into the coaching field & today's veterans get replaced by veterans that are more open-minded to women doing things on the basketball floor instead of off (if ya know what I'm sayin), we might see a woman get a legit shot at a solid head coaching gig in the NBA. I will say that Hammon seems like the right woman for the job & might get this train moving earlier than I predict. We need to see more women like her before it becomes a thing, though.

Jeremy Lambert: Definitely, in the right situation. I think a team full of ambitious young players would work or a team with humble veterans wouldn't be an issue. Every team in between could spell trouble. A team like the 76ers might not mind a female coach because what else do they have going on for them? A team like the Spurs would work because all of those guys have low key personalities who believe in what the organization is doing. Even a team like Oklahoma City might work because the stars believe in the organization. But there's no way a female, or a male for that matter, could succeed with a team like Sacremento and all their personalities or the Lakers with Kobe or the Knicks with that mess.

Give me one likely MLB trade deadline trade.

DJ: Cole Hamels is getting traded to the Cubs. He just became the first guy in 50+ years to no-hit them, so why wouldn't they want him, especially if the Phillies are looking to move on from him? My baseball sources say this one is a "no-brainer" and I tend to agree.

SCWe've already seen Johnny Cueto sent to the Kansas City Royals for three left-handed pitchers. I don't think the Reds are done. I've said this in multiple conversations this week before Cueto got traded & I stand by it...if I'm an American League team the guy I'm looking to add to my roster is Aroldis Chapman. He's got a year left on his contract after this one, and the AL is so tight right now that adding an otherworldy talent like Chapman to pitch the 9th inning is more than enough to push a team over the top. Us Cincy fans have actually become spoiled by his constant 100+ mph pitches, it's always great to see the reaction from AL people at All-Star Games or other people that don't see him on a regular basis. He's a special cat. The Reds are in selling mode. He's going somewhere.

But where? The Washington Nationals keep getting mentioned as a potential landing spot, which is really freaking annoying to me because my fantasy baseball team has two closers: Chapman & the Nationals' Drew Storen. That scares the crap out of me, so I'm ruling them out. I keep hearing rumors that the Yankees might be interested in Chapman & Brandon Phillips, and that sounds fun because BP would be incredible in the NY market. So I'm going with Chappy & BP to the Yanks for some minor league guys. The Reds will be unwatchable for at least the rest of this season & next season. My alcoholism will get worse.

JL: I expect the Reds to trade everyone not named Joey Votto and Todd Frazier. The Padres are also in "sell everyone" mode so it'll be interesting to see what they do. Cole Hamels is definitely getting dealt as well and he's getting dealt to the Yankees. I know the Cubs have been linked to him, but the Yankees are also in the mix and whenever the Yankees set their target on someone, they usually end up with him.

Which city gets an NHL franchise first: Quebec, Seattle, or Las Vegas?

DJ: The correct answer is "Portland", but out of all of those cities, I'm going with Quebec. I don't know why Las Vegas or Seattle would be interested in the NHL, because those cities really don't make sense as "hockey cities"....much like Glendale, Arizona. Seattle should be more focused on getting the NBA back. Everyone misses the Sonics and I still consider it one of the biggest crimes of the century that the NBA moved from the Sonics from the "Emerald City" to "Cowpie City".

Las Vegas doesn't need hockey either. Why? Because no one would go to any games. The attendance level at those game would be the NHL players themselves, the officials, the television crews, and the guy who drives the Zamboni. I've been to Las Vegas four times and not once have I thought to myself "Man, I would love to leave this sunny poolside beach chair and trade it in for some HOCKEY!". If the NHL goes to Vegas, they will regret that decision. The correct answer is Quebec because everyone knows how much Canadians love hockey. There's nothing to do in Canada but snowboard and play hockey. Give the Quebecers their own NHL team.

SCQuebec City & Las Vegas were the teams that applied for expansion franchises, so I think they would have the advantage over Seattle. Considering that professional leagues tend to expand in twos to keep scheduling somewhat sane, I think we can assume that Quebec City & Las Vegas would get their teams at the same time. The real question here is why the NHL needs more teams. Isn't 30 teams enough anymore? Just a couple of years ago they were owning the Coyotes so that franchise could stay alive. If I were the NHL and I really felt like I had to expand for some reason, I'd take Seattle & Vegas because they'd be new markets, even out the Eastern & Western Conferences, and put more teams in America. But Canada just has to ruin everything...

JL: Quebec is the obvious choice here. The NHL always wants more franchises in Canada because there's a guaranteed attendance and media coverage built in. I think the Seattle/Portland area would do well with a hockey team, but whether or not they could sustain that fanbase over the course of 10-20 years is a bit of a question mark. Las Vegas definitely doesn't need an NHL franchise or any sports franchise for that matter.

However, I don't think expansion is the answer. The NHL already has 30 teams and the conferences are actually imbalanced with the East having 16 and the West having 14. I guess you could add two more teams to the West, giving the league a total of 32, but then you worry about the talent pool becoming too thin and the bad teams being really bad, thus hurting their fanbases even more. Relocation is definitely possible though. The Coyotes will remain in Arizona for the time being, but in two years I wouldn't be shocked if they end up in Canada.

Favorite player of this year's MLB Hall of Fame class: Randy Johnson, John Smoltz, Graig Biggio, or Pedro Martinez?

DJI'm tempted to go with Pedro Martinez because of his feud with the Yankees (WHO'S YOUR DADDY?), but Randy Johnson was one of the best baseball players I ever watched play the game so I have to go with him. The guy was paper thin and stood at somewhere around ten feet tall. He didn't look like an athlete at all, and actually looked more like a logger. He was also reportedly kind of a jerk, but if I was a hitter in Major League Baseball, I would have been deathly afraid to step into the batter's box and face "The Big Unit". Johnson threw some serious heat in his day and if you don't believe me....just ask the bird he obliterated with a pitch during a game. Plus, he started out playing in MLB for the Seattle Mariners so I saw a lot of his games growing up and quickly learned to appreciate him. I'm not much of a baseball fan anymore, but I'll always consider myself a Randy Johnson fan.

SCI was a big Randy Johnson mark growing up. Dude was 6'10, played on the same team as Ken Griffey Jr. for about a decade & just made people look silly in his prime. And for awhile after his prime, he was the oldest pitcher to throw a perfect game. Dude brought the heat like nobody else. Plus you had all the double entendres with the Big Unit nickname, the fact his name would be a fantastic porn name, and an immortal sign from the 2001 World Series that said "It Takes More Than 9 Yanks To Beat Our Johnson". Biggio & Smoltz were great, but as a Reds fan I could never really get into either of them due to dislike towards the Astros & Braves during their time sharing divisions with the Reds. Pedro was great but I didn't like him either because he was part of the endless Yanks/Sawx coverage ESPN grew infatuated with. Love him nowadays on studio shows though

JL: It's a toss up between Johnson and Martinez for me. I love dominant pitchers. When playing MLB The Show, I always create a pitcher and often times I'll model my player after the greats like Johnson and Martinez. I give a slight edge to Johnson though, since I love fastball pitchers. There's just something great about a guy who can throw nearly 100 MPH, making the batter look stupid. Everyone knows the fastball is coming and yet the hitter can't get his bat around in time to make any type of contact. It's one thing to fool a hitter with an offspeed pitch, it's another thing to just blow the ball right by them.

2015-16 College Football Preview: ACC (Coastal Division)

It's that time of year again.

No, it's not time for football just yet. However, it is time to start predicting how every team will fare this upcoming season. And what's the only thing better than seeing actual football getting played?

That's right.....

TALKING ABOUT POWER 5 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL!

After weeks of previewing the "lesser" conferences in college football, the time has officially arrived to start taking a long hard look at the "big boys" of the sport. No offense to the guys playing in conferences like the MAC, Mountain West, or American Athletic....but most of the people care about what's going on in the "Power 5" conferences, simply because it's highly likely that the two teams playing for the National Championship at the end of the year are coming from these conferences.

First up on the plate? Those delicious teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference!

Why do football teams even need conferences to play in?

Have you ever asked yourself that question? Well, these following college football teams have and they've made the decision to go out on their own rather than follow the rules of any respective conference. It's a bold strategy....but it works for some teams.

2015-16 College Football Preview: American Athletic (East Division)

It's that time of year again.

No, it's not time for football just yet. However, it is time to start predicting how every team will fare this upcoming season. And what's the only thing better than seeing actual football getting played?

That's right.....

TALKING ABOUT FOOTBALL!

This is a tradition that I have done for almost 10 years now and is a big reason why I got into writing about sports to begin with. It's no secret that college football is my favorite sport. I absolutely love football and I think what we see on the college field is the most exciting product we can get. Yes, the NFL is fantastic. However, give me young, enthusiastic, excited players who are looking to make a name for themselves ANY DAY over over-paid professionals who may or may not show up on any given weekend.

College football is the fastest growing sport in the United States for a reason. Twenty years ago, no one cared about the sport outside of people who actually went to college or NFL scouts. These days though? You will have someone who never even stepped foot on a college campus watching the University of Memphis play Wyoming because one of the teams has a wide receiver who runs a 4.28 forty-yard dash. That's the power of college football.

Seeing as this beautiful sport is literally right around the corner. It's time to start making some predictions for the upcoming season. Over the next few weeks, you will see EVERY team in EVERY conference get previewed right here on the pages of THE ULTIMATE SPORTS BLOG! We are called "THE Ultimate Sports Blog" for a reason people. There's nothing we can't do......

THE USB Roundtable: Tiger, Dez or Demaryius, Brady's Suspension, ESPYS

This week on THE Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable, Dustin James, Steve Cook, and myself discuss whether or not Tiger will win again, Dez or Demaryius, Brady's suspension, and the ESPYS.

Will Tiger Woods win another major in his career?

Dustin JamesIt pains me to say it, but no. Have you seen the guy play lately? He's about as far away from the Tiger Woods we knew and loved as you can get. It's sad to think that Tiger's career started to plummet after the scandal that ended up temporarily destroying his name. I wonder what could have been had Tiger actually been able to keep it in his pants?

Steve CookThe simple answer is no. It's a shame, because in his prime Tiger Woods was the greatest golfer of all time. Anytime he was in a tournament was must-see TV because of his dominance. Now his appearances are considered must-see TV because of his incompetence. All great golfers eventually become irrelevant. Nicklaus, Palmer, Watson...all of these men got to the point where you'd only see them the first couple of days of a major tournament, they'd be way down the leaderboard, and you'd applaud them after their second round because of nostalgia & their previous brilliance. Tiger Woods is at that point before anybody expected. He shouldn't be. He's only 39 years old, there should still be a few years of contention left. He shouldn't be as far away from the top players as he is. Tiger's problems are mostly in his head. That sounds like an easy fix on paper, but anybody who's anybody knows that those are the problems that are the hardest to fix.

Jeremy Lambert: I'm doubtful. Golf is a sport where you can still win a major despite being past your psychical prime. Jack Nicklaus won a major when he was 46-years-old. Tiger is only 39, but his fall from grace was rapid and nearly unheard of in sports. He went from being the best golfer in the world to barely making the cut in the span of just a couple of years. He didn't forget how to play golf, he just isn't as relaxed as he used to be. He doesn't have that confidence that he used to have and he seems to be fighting with himself when he's on the course. Maybe he gets everything corrected and resurrects his career past the age of 40, but I don't know if it'll happen.

Who would you rather have on your team: Dez Bryant or Demaryius Thomas?

DJ: What a fantastic question. I would personally be pleased to have either guy on my NFL football team, but if you stick a gun to my head and make me choose....I'm taking Dez Bryant. Why? For a couple of reasons. One, Dez is a better football player, but just slightly. That's not a knock on Demaryius, it's just the truth. Watch the tape and you'll see for yourself. Two, Dez is one year younger than Thomas and age is important when you are talking about NFL players due to their short shelf lives. Three, the marketing and attention that the Dez Bryant name brings along with the personality. I love interesting things and I absolutely hate boring. I'm a Dez Bryant fan because the guy is interesting and can back it up on-the-field. True, he does bring some baggage with him, but so far in his NFL career, he's been about as much of a saint as you could ask him to be and he's not that bad of a teammate either.

Dez > Demaryius

SCI'd take either one on the Bengals because A.J. Green really needs some help out there. Both guys are top-notch receivers & don't have many flaws in their game. The main difference I can see between them is that Dez seems more high-maintenance. Dude's out there complaining about money, getting in trouble slapping his momma around...you don't hear about Demaryius having these issues. You might worry about him being a Peyton Manning creation until you remember that he was doing crazy good stuff with Tim Tebow as quarterback. He says he wants to retire as a Bronco while Dez is worried about how he can possibly feed his family with less than 15 million a year. You might talk me into Dez being better on the field, but they're close enough where it's easy to just take the guy with the better personality. That's Demaryuis Thomas.

JL: This is a tough one. On the field, I think Dez is the better player. He's a wide receiver that can elevate a quarterback instead of the other way around. Off the field, Demaryius is going to cause less drama. He's not going to make a big fuss about money and he's not going to need a babysitter. That said, Dez has stayed out of trouble since 2012 and seems to be handling things well off the field, money gripes aside. When it comes down to it, I'm going with Dez just because I know I'm getting the best receiver in the game on the field and I trust that, as long as I pay him, he's not going to be an issue off the field.

How many games will Tom Brady end up being suspended for?

DJGood lord, I don't care. If there was ever a story that I was over....it's this one. I wasn't interested in it from the moment it happened (his "deflating of the ball" had nothing to do with the outcome of the game, get over it) and I just wish it would be over and done with so we could officially bury it already. However, since I have to answer the question, I believe Mr. Brady will be suspended for two games. Why two games? Because that seems to be the number everyone else is falling on and since I've removed myself as far away from this story as possible, I'm going to go ahead and listen to them.

SCThe longer this thing gets drawn out, the more I expect Tom Brady to be on the field for Opening Night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Zero games is the safe bet here because Tom Brady is the franchise player of the greatest organization in professional sports & there is no way that he could ever do anything wrong. After speaking with Tom for a few hours, NFL Kommissar Roger Goodell must realize that the Honorable Mr. Brady is nothing but a fair & decent man, and never would have done anything with the slightest hint of illegality. And if we're being honest...4 games for deflating a football? Isn't that complete overkill? 4 games is what you get for doing drugs or getting charged with actual crimes against humanity. All that happened was a football got deflated. Big hairy deal. Just make Mr. Brady pay a fine & let us enjoy him play football, the game he has revolutionized for over a decade. He could quite possibly be the greatest quarterback-nay-the greatest football player of all time. How can Mr. Goodell deprive us of his presence? He must play against Pittsburgh on September 10th

OK, so I might be somewhat biased on this issue because I'm a Bengals fan & our AFC North hopes would improve with each Steeler loss. So?

JL: Two games seem to be the maximum number. I'd be shocked if he got more. Think about this; Greg Hardy, a man who is facing domestic violence charges, got his suspension dropped from ten games to four. Brady's current suspension is for four games. You're telling me that possibly deflating footballs is equal to possible domestic violence? Roger Goodell has screwed up a lot during his time as commissioner, so it wouldn't shock me if he screwed this up as well, but Brady and Brady defenders have every right to be upset if his four game suspension isn't reduced.

Did you watch the ESPYS?

DJNo. This shouldn't come as a surprise to most people who know me, because I tend to hate watching award shows. Very rarely will you catch me tuning into an awards show (the exceptions are MTV-related ones and the Emmy's because I'm a huge television fan), because the majority of them are utterly boring. Plus, if anything cool happens at the award show (like Ronda Rousey hitting Floyd Mayweather with a nice one), you can most likely catch it on Twitter within five minutes of it happening. SCORE ONE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA!

SCNot a second of it. I hear it was a good night for Cincinnati stories, as Devin Still's daughter Leah & Lauren Hill both got honored with awards. That's cool. Other than that, I couldn't give a rat's ass about who is the Best Team or the Best Athlete or the Best Water Boy or whatever. It's ESPN giving people awards & celebrating ESPN. Who cares? Obviously enough people do to make this a thing every year, but that doesn't mean I have to watch it. FS Ohio was showing Game 7 of the 1975 World Series. ESPN was showing a replay of Todd Frazier winning the Home Run Derby. I had plenty of other options, so I didn't need to bother with the ESPYs.

I really don't get why people get all worked up about who gets an ESPY either. The whole Caitlyn Jenner backlash thing seemed so ridiculous to me. People debating whether or not Caitlyn was "deserving of an ESPY"...really? You're treating it like it's a damn Nobel Prize or something. ESPN can give their awards to whoever they want, and if they think the Jenner story is something worth celebrating, so be it. I wish the transgender movement had a better famous spokesperson because I can't take anything associated with the Kardashians seriously, but they have what they have right now. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple enough.

JL: Nope.
