NFL Mock Draft #2: Post-Free Agency

The NFL Combine is officially behind us which means it's MOCK DRAFT SEASON at the Ultimate Football Blog! For those of you who don't know, I fashion myself as a bit of a "mock draft expert". I've been doing mock drafts for the better part of a decade now and I consider myself quite good at it (I actually have a better percentage than ESPN's own Mel Kiper does, so TAKE THAT KIPER!). The way I do mock drafts is pretty simple. I tend to favor trying to predict what teams will do. Most mock draft experts like to predict what they think the team SHOULD do, but I think it's just as fun to predict what teams will do.

Anyways, you will likely see a new mock draft from me at least every other week leading up to the NFL Draft in April. Here is what you need to know before moving on.....

-Other Potential Picks: These are other guys the team could take at this spot. Please keep in mind that I will not include players who have already been selected in this slot in order to keep it more realistic. If they are off the board already, how could they be a potential pick? Think about it....

Ultimate Football Blog's NFL Mock Draft

Post-NFL Free Agency

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston (QB) Florida State

This one is as close to "guaranteed" as we can get at this point. Perhaps the only thing that could cause Jameis to slip out of this spot is some sort of controversy before the draft goes down next month. And let's face it....with Jameis Winston, that's always a possibility.

Other Potential Picks:

-Marcus Mariota (QB) Oregon
-Leonard Williams (DE) USC
-Dante Fowler (LB/DE) Florida

2. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Mariota (QB) Oregon

BREAKING NEWS: There are NFL teams out there looking for a QB and there aren't a whole lot of options out there as far as potential franchise guys are concerned. That's why I'm 75% sure that if the Titans don't like Mariota, there will be a team that moves up to grab him. The rumors are flying with teams like the Saints, Eagles, Chargers, Redskins, and Browns potentially trading up to grab the Oregon QB. Someone's going to do it if Tennessee doesn't like what they see.

Other Potential Picks:

-Leonard Williams (DE) USC
-Dante Fowler (LB/DE) Florida
-Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Williams (DE) USC

The Jags need help in a lot of different areas, but Williams gives them an extremely solid talent along the defensive line for 10+ years (if they can keep him in Jacksonville that is).

Other Potential Picks:

-Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama
-Kevin White (WR) West Virginia
-Dante Fowler (LB/DE) Florida

4. Oakland Raiders: Kevin White (WR) West Virginia

The Raiders failed to add any significant game changing weapons to help with the development of QB Derek Carr in free agency. They MUST add one in the NFL draft. The addition of Kevin White would help give Carr another target alongside James Jones and would also give plenty of opposing DB's nightmares for days.

Other Potential Picks:

-Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama
-Dante Fowler (LB/DE) Florida
-Randy Gregory (LB/DE) Nebraska

5. Washington Redskins: Dante Fowler (LB/DE) Florida

The Redskins are in desperate need of defensive talent and grabbing the best edge rusher in the draft would be an ideal move for Dan Snyder and company.

Other Potential Picks:

-Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama
-Randy Gregory (DE/LB) Nebraska
-Vic Beasley (DE/LB) Clemson

6. New York Jets: Randy Gregory (DE/LB) Nebraska

A lot of people think the Jets will address their offensive needs in this draft, but if you actually look at their roster, their biggest area of need is an elite edge rusher (outside of a franchise QB of course). Randy Gregory of Nebraska would give the Jets an immediate upgrade at the position. If they don't like what they see from Beasley, they could always take a look at Alabama's Amari Cooper.

Other Potential Picks:

-Shane Ray (DE/LB) Missouri
-Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama
-Vic Beasley (DE/LB) Clemson

7. Chicago Bears: Amari Cooper (WR) Alabama

The Bears could look at adding a defensive piece with this pick (and let's face it, that wouldn't be a bad thing), but with Cooper sitting there ripe for the taking....the Bears may not be able to resist. Chicago just dumped WR Brandon Marshall and are in need of finding a replacement to line-up alongside Alshon Jeffery. The addition of Cooper would be stunning and may even cause Jay Cutler to smile.

Other Potential Picks:

-Vic Beasley (DE/LB) Clemson
-Danny Shelton (DT) Washington
-Arik Armstead (DE) Oregon

8. Atlanta Falcons: Vic Beasley (DE/LB) Clemson

The Falcons are another team that is in dire need of an edge rusher. With them flying off the board at this point, it would be wise for the Falcons to grab one now. Vic Beasley of Clemson is not only one of the best edge rusher's in this draft, but he gives the Falcons an immediate upgrade to their horrendous defense. You can't ask for much more than that.

Other Potential Picks:

-Trae Waynes (CB) Michigan State
-Shane Ray (DE/LB) Missouri
-Arik Armstead (DE) Oregon

9. New York Giants: Landon Collins (S) Alabama

This pick could be viewed as somewhat of a "reach" for the Giants. However, adding a safety has to be considered a must for New York as they head into the draft and grabbing a guy who is the best safety in the draft and is drawing comparisons to Sean Taylor? That would be huge for the G-Men. I'm a fan of Collins' and this selection as I feel he has the talent to be a stud in the league for years to come.

Other Potential Picks:

-Brandon Scherff (OT) Iowa
-T.J. Clemmings (OT) Pittsburgh
-Danny Shelton (DT) Washington

10. St. Louis Rams: Brandon Scherff (OL) Iowa

The Rams traded for Nick Foles and now they need to protect him. Foles showed what he could do behind a fantastic offensive line in 2013 for Philadelphia, and if St. Louis can copy that formula, they may have found a potential diamond in the rough. Last year the Rams added OT Greg Robinson to the team in the first-round and now they need to add another dominant offensive lineman so the team isn't staring at another potential season-ending injury to it's QB. The Dallas Cowboys have shown what can happen to your team's performance on-the-field by focusing on the offensive line in the first rounds of the draft and if the Rams can follow suit....we might be looking at a potential dark horse playoff team next season.

Other Potential Picks:

-Andrus Peat (OT) Stanford
-Arik Armstead (DE) Oregon
-Danny Shelton (DT) Washington

11. Minnesota Vikings: Shane Ray (DE/LB) Missouri

In this scenario, the Vikings would likely be smart to try and trade down and add more picks. Their biggest area of need is middle linebacker and there just isn't one worthy of a selection at this spot. However, if Minnesota feels compelled to add a player, they could do a lot worse than adding a guy like Shane Ray to Mike Zimmer's defense. I used to think Minnesota was taking a WR in the first, but not anymore. With the addition of Mike Wallace, that gives them Wallace, Cordarelle Patterson, and Charles Johnson (who the Vikings are supposedly REALLY excited about!) at the position and adding another guy with a first-round pick would be overkill at the position.

Other Potential Picks:

-T.J. Clemmings (OT) Pittsburgh
-Andrus Peat (OT) Stanford
-Arik Armstead (DE) Oregon

12. Cleveland Browns: DeVante Parker (WR) Louisville

The Browns have two first-round picks, so that gives them choices here. I see them either addressing the wide reciever position or perhaps the defensive line. If they decide to look at a defensive lineman, they could do a lot worse than Danny Shelton out of Washington. However, I think they will be too intrigued by DeVante Parker's talent at the WR position to pass up on him. The Browns added Brian Hartline and Dwayne Bowe in free agency, but they are still lacking a serious #1 threat at the position. Parker gives them that threat. Sorry Steve Cook.

Other Potential Picks:

-Dorial Green-Beckham (WR) Oklahoma
-Danny Shelton (DT) Washington
-Arik Armstead (DL) Oregon

13. New Orleans Saints: Trae Waynes (CB) Michigan State

With the kind of WR talent the Saints have to face in their division, they need a #1 CB to help shut them down. Waynes is the best CB in the draft and with the 13th overall pick, he would be a huge steal for New Orleans. You can't ask for much more than that.

Other Potential Picks:

-Bud Dupree (LB/DE) Kentucky
-Marcus Peters (CB) Washington
-T.J. Clemmings (OT) Pittsburgh

14. Miami Dolphins: T.J. Clemmings (OT) Pittsburgh

The Dolphins upgraded their defensive line in free agency with the addition of Ndamukong Suh, now it's time for them to re-focus that attention on the offensive line. If they are serious about the development of Ryan Tannehill (and let's face it, at this point...no one knows how the Dolphins feel long-term about Tannehill), they need to give him some more protection to see if he can potentially blossom into a better player than he already is.

Other Potential Picks:

-Dorial Green-Beckham (WR) Oklahoma
-Andrus Peat (OT) Stanford
-La'El Collins (OT) LSU

15. San Francisco 49ers: Danny Shelton (DT) Washington

If the 49ers could build a time machine, something tells me they would build one and go back to a time when they had one of the best rosters in the NFL and the future was looking bright for them. You know. Like how things were ONE MONTH AGO! Man, if any team has suffered this off-season, it's the 49ers. The unfortunate retirements of some players and other unforeseen circumstances has left the once talent-rich program, starving for talent. While SF would ideally like to add an inside linebacker here, there just isn't one worthy of a first-round pick in this draft. However, the selection of Danny Shelton out of Washington would help ease the pain of everything the Niners have lost so far this off-season. He could potentially turn into the best defensive player in the draft and at this point....as a 49ers fan....you'll take it.

Other Potential Picks:

-La'El Collins (OT) LSU
-Arik Armstead (DL) Oregon
-Jaelen Strong (WR) Arizona State

16. Houston Texans: Dorian Green-Beckham (WR) Oklahoma

The Texans lost long-time WR Andre Johnson this off-season and need to find a replacement. DGB is arguably one of the most talented WR's in this draft, but he also comes with a lot of baggage off-the-field. This is the ultimate "risk or reward" kind of draft pick, but if it pays off....it would be huge for a team like Houston that feels like it's only one or two solid pieces away from being a Super Bowl team.

Other Potential Picks:

-Jaelen Strong (WR) Arizona State
-La'El Collins (OT) LSU
-Andrus Peat (OT) Stanford

17. San Diego Chargers: Andrus Peat (OT) Stanford

A lot of people think the Chargers are going to grab a running back in the first-round, but I can't see them doing it. There's a new trend going on in the NFL and it's NOT drafting a running back in the first-round. You can get a stud RB anywhere (even in free agency) and it's becoming less important to have to draft one, especially this high. With that said, there's still a plethora of good offensive line talent available here and the Chargers could do a lot worse than giving Phillip Rivers more protection. Plus, whoever they do decide to add at running back would get a nice boost if San Diego had a player like Andrus Peat on the line.

Other Potential Picks:

-La'El Collins (OT) LSU
-Melvin Gordon (RB) Wisconsin
-Todd Gurley (RB) Georgia

18. Kansas City Chiefs: Jaelen Strong (WR) Arizona State

The addition of WR Jeremy Maclin in free agency was huge for Kansas City. However, they still need more pieces at that position. Ideally, the Chiefs would love for a player like DeVante Parker to fall to them here, but with so many teams needing WR talent right now, I can't see that happening. Jaelen Strong out of Arizona State would be a hell of a consolation prize though.

Other Potential Picks:

-Devin Smith (WR) Ohio State
-Marcus Peters (CB) Washington
-Maxx Williams (TE) Minnesota

19. Cleveland Browns: Arik Armstead (DL) Oregon

DeVante Parker and Arik Armstead in the top 20 of the NFL Draft? Things are looking up in Cleveland baby! Wait. Who's the QB? Johnny Manziel?

There's plenty of decent QB's in the second-round of the NFL draft......

Other Potential Picks:

-Devin Smith (WR) Ohio State
-Ereck Flowers (OT) Miami
-La'El Collins (OT) LSU

20. Philadelphia Eagles: Marcus Peters (CB) Washington

The Eagles are one of those teams that no one really knows what they are thinking, which makes them a fun team to mock draft. The team added Byron Maxwell in free agency, but I've gone on record with how much I disliked that signing. I think Maxwell is a fine player, but the Eagles are paying him like he's a #1 shut down CB and he's far from that. But, if they could add a player like Marcus Peters in the draft, that could help ease the transition that Maxwell's going to face going from Seattle to Philly and could actually end up giving the Eagles one of the best 1,2 CB's in the league. That would be a great accomplishment for the Eagles especially when you factor in how bad their CB's were last season.

Other Potential Picks:

-P.J. Williams (CB) Florida State
-Bud Dupree (LB/DE) Kentucky
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Malcolm Brown (DT) Texas

Cincinnati is awful on the defensive line. They are bringing back Michael Johnson, but he had an off-year last season and there's no guarantee he's going to revert back to the player he once was. The addition of Malcolm Brown gives them a fantastic piece in their interior.

Other Potential Picks:

-Bud Dupree (LB/DE) Kentucky
-Eli Harold (LB/DE) Virginia
-Devin Smith (WR) Ohio State

22. Pittsburgh Steelers: P.J. Williams (CB) Florida State

The Steelers need a corner and fortunately for them, there are a lot of good CB's on the board here. They could honestly add Williams. his teammate Ronald Darby, or if they want...they could potentially look at either Jalen Collins out of LSU or even Byron Jones out of UConn. No matter which way you slice it though, Pittsburgh will likely try and fix their broken secondary with this pick.

Other Potential Picks:

-Bud Dupree (DE/LB) Kentucky
-Byron Jones (CB) UConn
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU

23. Detroit Lions: Byron Jones (CB) UConn

Byron Jones was the big winner of the NFL Combine. Teams have started to take a closer look at him following his tremendous combine performance and the rumors is....they love what they see. Every year we see a guy who's name takes a tremendous rise following the combine and this year, it's Byron Jones.

Other Potential Picks:

-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU
-La'El Collins (OT) LSU

24. Arizona Cardinals: Melvin Gordon (RB) Wisconsin

I'm not a fan of taking a RB here, but the Cardinals need one bad and Melvin Gordon has the talent to turn into a fantastic NFL player.

Other Potential Picks:

-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State
-Cameron Erving (OL) Florida State
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU

25. Carolina Panthers: La'El Collins (OT) LSU

The Panthers added some talent on the offensive line in free agency, but they will quickly find out why those guys were available. They all suck. Carolina needs to add some more talent on the offensive line in the draft and at this spot, La'El Collins is easily the best one available.

Other Potential Picks:

-Ereck Flowers (OT) Miami
-Devin Smith (WR) Ohio State
-D.J. Humphries (OT) Florida

26. Baltimore Ravens: Devin Smith (WR) Ohio State

The Ravens are in need of wide receiver help after losing Torrey Smith in free agency. Steve Smith isn't getting any younger and they don't have a lot of options outside of him. With wide receiver's flying off the board in the first-round, the Ravens would be wise to grab one while they can.

Other Potential Picks:

-Todd Gurley (RB) Georgia
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU
-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State

27. Dallas Cowboys: Todd Gurley (RB) Georgia

Dallas lost DeMarco Murray in free agency and signed Darren McFadden to replace him. That's not good news for Cowboys fans. While I mentioned earlier that I'm not a fan of picking a running back in the first-round, that doesn't mean the Cowboys won't do it. If Gordon goes off the board (and I have him going to Arizona at #24), then Dallas may feel compelled to take Gurley here. Losing Murray was big for Dallas, but replacing him with Gurley would help ease the pain. Gurley behind that offensive line? Yikes.

Other Potential Picks:

-Eddie Goldman (DT) Florida State
-Jalen Collins (CB) LSU
-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State

28. Denver Broncos: D.J. Humphries (OT) Florida

The Broncos let Orlando Franklin walk in free agency and if you take a close look at their roster, they now have a glaring hole at right tackle. Fortunately for the Broncos, there are a lot of good tackles in this draft and with their luck, they'll be able to grab one with the 28th pick. Taking a TE like Maxx Williams is also a possibility after losing Julius Thomas to the Jaguars.

Other Potential Picks:

-Maxx Williams (TE) Minnesota
-Cedric Ogbuehi (OT) Texas A&M
-Ereck Flowers (OT) Miami

29. Indianapolis Colts: Shaq Thompson (LB/S) Washington

This would be a huge pick-up for the Colts. Thompson is one of my favorite players in this draft. He doesn't really have a natural position, which gives whatever team takes him, plenty of options on-the-field. If you asked me, he projects out best as a safety at the next level and if Indianapolis drafted him and lined him up in the secondary, watch out. He's also a fantastic kick returner and isn't too shabby on offense either. One of the best all-around athletes in the draft.

Other Potential Picks:

-Paul Dawson (LB) TCU
-Denzel Perryman (LB) Miami
-Ereck Flowers (OT) Miami

30. Green Bay Packers: Jalen Collins (CB) LSU

The Packers lost Tramon Williams in free agency and need to find a replacement. It helps the Packers that this draft is loaded up top with good corners. They would be smart to grab one in the first-round before the talent really starts to take a dip.

Other Potential Picks:

-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State
-Kevin Johnson (CB) Wake Forest
-Paul Dawson (LB) TCU

31. New Orleans Saints: Maxx Williams (TE) Minnesota

The Saints traded Jimmy Graham to Seattle for the Seahawks' first-round draft pick. Why not use that draft pick to take Graham''s replacement who also happens to be the best pass-catching tight end in the draft? Some things happen for a reason.....

Other Potential Picks:

-Cameron Erving (OL) Florida State
-Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State
-Kevin Johnson (CB) Wake Forest

32. New England Patriots: Ronald Darby (CB) Florida State

The Patriots lost Darrelle Revis in free agency and need to find his replacement in the draft. Like I've already mentioned numerous times, this draft is top heavy with corners and I would almost say it's a sure fire thing that the Patriots will have a nice selection to choose from when they are on the clock at the end of the first-round. Whoever they take may not be as good as Revis, but few corners are.

Other Potential Picks:

-Kevin Johnson (CB) Wake Forest
-Devin Funchess (WR/TE) Michigan
-Breshad Perriman (WR) Central Florida
