The Second Annual NFL Toilet Bowlers (DEFENSE)

This weekend is Pro Bowl week in the NFL. Well, we here at The Ultimate Sports Blog are sick and tired of only the "good" football players getting all the recognition at the end of the season. What about the guys who completely sucked this year? Where is the love for them? Where is their award show?

It's right here people. The Ultimate Sports Blog is proud to announce the second annual "TOILET BOWLERS" awards! While these guys were probably about as far away from making the Pro Bowl as possible, they still have a place in my heart for the utter garbage they showcased on the football field this year. We don't discriminate here at THE USB. We believe the shitty guys should get just as much as attention (if not more) than the good football players. They are likely the reason their respective teams suck, and they should either be cut or given a fair warning this off-season.

So without any further adieu......

Ladies and gents...........

Here is..............

(PS: I didn't do any kickers or punters because no one cares about kickers or punters....)

OK, sorry about that.............

The 2015 All-Cook Team: Defense/Special Teams

Hi, hello & welcome to the All-Cook Team: Defense/Special Teams! Last time we named our offensive players, this time we're going defense. As a football fan that was raised on AFC North football, nobody appreciates good defense more than me. So what kinds of things do I look from defensive players to make this team?

-Guys that hit people hard.
-Guys that leave it all out on the field.
-Guys that shut down their opposition.

OK, these are all pretty obvious things to look for, right? Let's talk defense!

Defensive End: JJ Watt, Houston Texans

You can't have a team like this without Watt. As annoying as the hype around him gets, unlike a lot of people that ESPN incessantly talks about, he can back it up on the field and then some. He was hobbled most of the season with a groin injury & a hand injury, but dude still led the league in sacks & performed at his usual top-notch level. If he was 100% healthy nobody would be safe. Hell, nobody's safe as it is.

The 2015 All-Cook Team: Offense

One of the best parts about the football season ending during the 1980s & 1990s was when John Madden would name his All-Madden Team. Madden would pick players that he thought represented football & played the way that he thought the game should be played,  and celebrate them on a TV special. He stopped doing the TV show when he moved to ABC's Monday Night Football, but the All-Madden Team still lives on in our hearts.

I think a fitting tribute to Madden, a man who explained football to a generation & who brought video game football to the ultimate level, would be to revive the tradition of selecting a team comprised of players that represent football and the way the game should be played. Phil Simms has an All-Iron Team, but who cares about Phil Simms? The All-Cook Team will be my annual feature (if I remember to do it next year) honoring players that play the game the way I feel it should be played, players I enjoy watching, and especially on the offensive side of the ball, players that bring me success on the fantasy football gridiron. What can I say...all of us fantasy players have our favorite guys.

Today we'll present the offense. So what do I look for in picking players for the All-Cook Team? Here's a brief list:

-Players with personality.
-Players that are uniquely talented.
-Players that help me out in Fantasy Football.

I also like players that come out of nowhere & surprise people. You'll see a couple of those. Without further adieu, here is the All-Cook Team Offense!

Quarterback: Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

When it's all said and done, 2015 will be remembered as the year that Killa Cam took the next step up. Those of us who watched him at Auburn knew he had the skills. He had the arm. He could run. He was a mountain of a man that had the agility of a small man. He was the obvious #1 overall pick when he went pro. He had a great rookie season, but then he kind of stagnated. He was a boom or bust QB that had no talent around him and got more attention for his celebrations than anything else. When his one talented wide receiver got injured before the season started, we wrote him and his team off.

We were wrong. Cam flashed back to his Auburn days when he carried the Tigers to a national championship and has carried the Panthers to the Super Bowl. With all due respect to Jonathan Stewart, Teddy Ginn & the other guys on the Panthers offense, it's the Cam Newton Show. He passes, he runs, he does it all. How do you stop him? This season, you don't. We'll find out what the Denver Broncos can do in the Super Bowl.

Cam has silenced his doubters, but doubters have been replaced by haters. People write to their TV stations angry because Cam has the audacity to dance when he does something good. Because he has a good time playing football. This argument will pop up as long as there are old people watching football...I think sometime around the age of 50 a switch gets flipped and you stop wanting to see people dance. I kind of understood it back when Cam's teams were getting blown out by 40 and he'd still dance around, but now that his team is the best in the league, he's got full permission to style and profile. When you're the best, you can get away with it, and Cam's the best.

Hot Takes: NFL Conference Championship

Only one game left in the season. So get them HOT TAKES!

Patriots vs. Broncos

*Peyton Manning looked like the Peyton Manning of old in the first half, throwing two touchdown passes to Owen Daniels. Then he just looked like an old Peyton Manning.

*Given the circumstances, I thought Tom Brady had a very good game. The Denver defense was in his face all game and yet he stood in the pocket and somehow found a receiver. Yes, he lost, only threw one touchdown, and had two picks. But this game would’ve been a lot worse if it weren’t for Brady. And Rob Gronkowski.

*Seriously, how good in Rob Gronkowski? Maybe he gets away with some pushing, but there’s a lot more shoving of him. He’s one of the greatest tight ends of all-time and there’s no answer for him.

*A lot of talk about Bill Belichick going for it on fourth down multiple times in the fourth quarter. I don’t see the controversy. I thought he made the right call in both situations, it just didn’t work out. Maybe you can argue that he should’ve kicked the field goal with six minute remaining as there was a very good chance that the offense would’ve gotten the ball back, but hindsight is 20/20. The only thing I disagreed with was the play call on the fourth-and-one. I would’ve gone with the Brady sneak, which works 99% of the time.

*A missed extra point will be the talking point as to why the Patriots lost, but really their lack of protection for Brady was the biggest reason they lost. If the offensive line could’ve given him an extra second per play, this is a much different game.

*If this was the last Manning vs. Brady showdown, it certainly lived up to the hype. And even though Brady has more Super Bowl rings, Manning now holds the head-to-head record. For some reason, I think Tom can live with that.

Cardinals vs. Panthers

*NO TIGHT BUTTS!

*My biggest reason for optimism heading into this game was Carson Palmer. He wasn’t good against Green Bay and the Panthers have a much better defense. I thought if the defense could get to Palmer, they could win. They got to him for six turnovers.

*Kurt Coleman’s interception at the end of the half really sealed the game. If Patrick Peterson returns the Cam INT for six or the Cardinals offense scores and cuts the lead to 10, it’s a much different game. 24-7 with another Palmer turnover was too much to overcome despite the Panthers history of blowing leads.

*Palmer never gave Arizona a chance. I think their defense would’ve eventually settled down because it seems like blowing up on the sideline leads to better communication, but every time the defense made a stop, the offense or special teams would screw it up.

*Shame that Thomas Davis had to miss most of the game with a broken forearm. But he’ll play and likely be effective in the Super Bowl.

*How good has Luke Kuechly become in pass coverage? It was the biggest knock on him throughout his young career and now he’s fixed it. Not sure there’s a weakness in his game.

*Panthers pissed a lot of people off when they went for 2 despite leading 40-15 with five minutes left. If you weren’t upset with that, you would’ve been upset with their celebration and team photos. Basically, Cam and the Panthers can do no right if you’ve already decided that you’re going to dislike them. Going for two wasn’t necessary, but the Cardinals went for two and succeeded earlier, so the logic was that the team was just trying to match. Also, Mike Shula has been criticized all season for being way too conservative with the lead. He called the second half like it was a tie game.

*Remember before the season when everyone laughed at the Panthers giving Cam Newton a big contract and how everyone compared Newton’s numbers to Colin Kaepernick’s when the 49ers benched Colin? That was fun. I’m not saying Newton and the Panthers will win the Super Bowl (as per my rule, I’ll once again pick against them), but the guy is clearly a top tier quarterback. He makes plays that other QBs simply can’t make. He’s taken a receiving core, led by Ted Ginn and Philly Brown, and turned them into the best offense in the league. It helps to have a tight end security blanket like Greg Olsen, it helps to have a running game, and it definitely helps to have a top defense, but none of that takes away from what Newton has accomplished this year. He’s a special player making special plays. And if you’re too busy getting upset because he dances or bows or smiles too much then you’re missing out on seeing a great player having fun and entertaining.

Top 50 Uncommitted High School Football Recruits

One of the biggest days in college football is right around the corner.

Yes, I'm talking about NATIONAL SIGNING DAY!

It's the day when high school football recruits finally make it official about where they will be playing football for the next 3-5 years. You want to know just how important recruiting is in the world of college football? Go ahead and name me the last team to win a National Championship that didn't have a constant presence in the top 20 recruiting classes year-in and year-out? You can't because they don't exist.

Why is Alabama constantly the best college football team every year? Because they kill it in recruiting every year. It's that "simple".

So, with all that said. It's time to take a look at the guys who will be creating waves come National Signing Day on February 3. These are the best high school football players who are currently not committed to any school. These are the names you are going to want to learn, because in just a little over a week, they will be either be making college football fans the HAPPIEST people on the planet....or they will be getting threats from losers on Twitter because they didn't choose their school.

It's a fun process, it really is.

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Conference Championship Picks!

Hi, hello & welcome to Conference Championship Week! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and we're down to the final four football teams. The 1 & 2 seeds all held serve last week, so we're getting the four best teams in the NFL throughout the regular season. Good times, right? I expect these games to be really close, and so does Vegas.

Last year at this time we took a look at the coaching carousel to fill space at the beginning of the column. Since I don't have any better ideas, let's do that again!

Cleveland Browns

Out: Mike Pettine

In: Hue Jackson

Jackson had a one-year stint as head coach of the Raiders & actually got them to .500 somehow but still got let go because reasons. He's done a good job with the Bengals offense the last couple of years & knows all the teams in the AFC North really well. On paper I really like this hire, and I think Hue would be a really successful head coach in the right situation.

Unfortunately, it's the Browns. The organization is going through tons of changes right now and maybe there's some hope that things will get better someday, but we're saying this about the Browns every couple of years and the more things change the more they stay the same. I wish the guy luck, but I don't like his chances.

Pro Football Focus's Top NFL Players for 2015-16 (Offense)

The 2015-16 NFL regular season is over, so it's time to reflect back on who the best and worst players in the league were this year. The only thing is, I'm personally not reflecting back on these guys myself (that comes a little later on down the road when I rank every single starter in the NFL!). Oh no. I'm leaving it up to the "experts" over at ProFootballFocus.com to do it this time.

I assume since you clicked on this article that I don't have to tell you about ProFootballFocus.com and their controversial grading system that seems to get people all worked up. I assume that you are more than aware of PFF's reputation in the football online world and that's the main reason you are checking this sucker out.

Get it?

Got it?

Good.

Re-drafting the 2015 NFL Draft: Round 1

The NFL Draft is arguably the most important piece of the "NFL team building process". It's the one event every year that brings both promise and headaches to every single NFL franchise. With the right selection in the draft, you can reap the benefits of adding a stud player who can change the luck of your franchise overnight or you can set your franchise back YEARS by picking the wrong player. It's a complicated process that I'm absolutely obsessed with. In my opinion, it's the most important part of building up a potential dynasty in the NFL. You have some people who insist that you can build a contender through free agency...but we have seen time and time again how that formula doesn't work.

Building an NFL dynasty is pretty simple in hindsight....

Draft great players + develop them well = SUPER BOWLS.

See, told you it's a simple formula to follow. Unfortunately, there's only a select few NFL teams that can nail it.

So, how do we know which teams made the right and wrong picks in the draft? We go back and take a look at how everything SHOULD HAVE unfolded in the draft last year.

Re-Drafting the 2015 NFL Draft (First Round)

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston (QB), Florida State

Originally selected: #1 in round 1 by Tampa Bay

Bucs made the right pick at #1 last year. Even though Winston went through some growing pains in his first season with Tampa Bay, he looks like the real deal. He threw for over 4,000 yards with 22 touchdowns and a QB rating of 84.2. With Dirk Koetter taking over the head coaching position for Tampa Bay...prepare for those numbers to improve next season.

2. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Mariota (QB), Oregon

Originally selected: #2 in round 1 by Tennessee

The Titans are not a good football team. Luckily for them though, they have seemingly found their franchise QB, so that's a good start. Marcus Mariota had an up-and-down rookie season for the Titans, but there were times when he looked like he could potentially turn into one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL and that has to get the Titans excited. The only thing I worry about long-term is if the Titans are building correctly around Mariota. The hiring of Mike Mularkey as head coach does nothing to get me excited about Marcus's future and part of me worries that the kid is going to go through head coaches like I go through socks. C'mon Tennessee. You have your guy at QB. Now let's make this thing work.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ronald Darby (CB), Florida State

Originally selected: #50 in round 2 by Buffalo

As much as I love Marcus Peters and his interception skills, Ronald Darby quietly had arguably the best rookie season by a cornerback in the NFL this season. His coverage skills are top notch and he looks like he could be a force in the league for along time. The Jaguars are HURTING for a good corner. The Jags look like one of those teams that could turn the table real soon. They have a good young offense, now they need to build up the defense. Selecting Darby over Dante Fowler last year would have helped that in a big way.

Hot Takes: NFL Divisional Round

Only three games remain in the season. So get them HOT TAKES!

Chiefs vs. Patriots

*I thought the Chiefs had a better chance than were given on Saturday thanks to their defense, but as usual, Bill Belichick came up with a great gameplan and Tom Brady executed it to perfection. It’s amazing that the game plan rarely involves running the football, which is why you have to get pressure on Brady. He’s going to throw it 40+ times a game and if you can’t get to him, he’ll pick you apart.

*It certainly didn’t help the Chiefs that Justin Houston and Jeremy Maclin were ineffective. Houston wasn’t able to help the pass rush, which is what the Chiefs needed to win, and Maclin wasn’t able to get downfield, which limited Alex Smith. Even if those two players were healthy, they still would’ve had a tough time beating New England, but they obviously would’ve helped.

*Andy Reid tried to blame the headsets for his terrible clock management down the stretch, which is fine, but doesn’t explain the previous 17 years. The Chiefs knew what they were getting with Reid. He’s a very good head coach who gets a lot out of a little and consistently wins, but his clock and late-game management is some of the worst in league history. It’s why I never feel 100% comfortable picking a Reid coached team in a big game.

*Another AFC title game for Belichick and Brady. Somethings just don’t change.

NFL Round-Up: Divisional Round Weekend

The playoffs are in full swing in the NFL right now......

That's right Jim Mora. Playoffs. With just 8 NFL teams left going for that big prize known as the "Super Bowl", things are starting to get REALLY interesting in the NFL-world.

Can you taste it people?

It tastes like Super Bowl BBQ and I couldn't be more ready for it.....

An Open Letter to Ron Rivera

Dear Ron Rivera,

I’m sorry. Last year, I wanted you fired as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. The team was 3-8-1. They had just lost after the bye week for the fourth time in four seasons. Your overall coaching record was 28-31-1. Aside from your third year when the team went 12-4, won the division, but lost their only playoff game at home; you seemed like an average coach who couldn’t get the team over the hump. Almost every game was the same. Either the offense failed to put together a game-winning score or the defense failed to prevent one. Whether it was a missed field, a Cam Newton interception, or a blown coverage, as Cam said in a 2012 post-game press conference, “same script.” It was frustrating to watch as a fan and I’m sure you were frustrated as the coach. I didn’t put all the blame on you. Cam hadn’t quite matured into the quarterback that’s on the field now, the defense was filled with young and inexperienced players, the previous regime handed out a lot of bad contracts, guys were injured, etc…. But in sports, the easiest thing to do is fire the head coach. That’s always the first reaction of the fans and usually the first reaction of ownership and the general manager.

One year later, I’m happy to admit that I was wrong about you. Last year, the team made the playoffs and won their first playoff game. Sure, a lot of that had to do with a weak division and a Carson Palmer injury, but all you can do is win the games that are put in front of you. Entering this season, my expectations were tempered. I figured that the team was the best in a bad division. When Kelvin Benjamin went down in pre-season, all hope seemed lost. Newton has always relied on one main receiver to bail him out. That receiver got hurt. Now what?

The wheels should’ve fallen off in Seattle. That’s a game the team loses in previous years. Not just against that opponent, but in that manner. On the road against the defending NFC Champions, nothing was going right through three quarters. The game was also following a bye week, and, well, did I mention that you were 0-4 after a bye coming into the season? Somehow, the team came back to win. Newton made all the right throws and the defense held. I believe that game spark the incredible regular season that the Panthers ended up putting together.

I don’t feel that this would’ve been possible without you as the head coach. I read Roman Harper’s column on MMQB and he praised you for being a player’s coach who keeps an even-keel. It would’ve been easy to put the blame on the players or the refs over the years, but you stuck by the team because they stuck by you.

I wouldn’t want anyone else coaching this team right now. Not even Bill Belichick. He might be the greatest coach in the history of the game, but there’s no way Cam would be allowed to be Cam if Belichick were steering the ship. Your willingness to adapt and accept are your greatest strengths as a head coach. I’m glad the organization didn’t fire you. The biggest strength an NFL team can have is consistency. The best teams in the league are the ones that keep quarterbacks and coaches together. Belichick and Brady. Carroll and Wilson. Tomlin and Roethlisberger. Rodgers and McCarthy. Lewis and Dalton.

I don’t know if the team will win on Sunday. I’m a sports pessimist and always plan for the worst so I’ve already prepared my “Playoff Disappointment Cocktails” for the weekend. I do know that you’ve done an amazing job with this team and I’m proud that you’re our coach.

Signed, Jeremy Lambert on behalf of every Panthers fan
