The 2015-16 NFL Season Predicted By Madden 16

One of the biggest days of every football season is the release of the Madden football game. Madden has been the king of NFL video games for well over a decade and there'a a reason for that. The realism is uncanny and if you're like 98% of people in this world who never got to play in the NFL...the Madden video game is the next best thing.

A couple years back, ESPN started using Madden as a way to predict upcoming games and actually made a reoccurring column using Madden as a simulator due to it's realism. That's exactly what we are doing here today in this column. The NFL season is right around the corner and every football analyst under the sun is making their predictions. But how does Madden feel this season will go? We've got the answers right here. I went ahead and simulated an entire season worth of games and recorded the data all for your pleasure. Now, using Madden as a way to simulate the season is far from an accurate exercise, but as ESPN has proven in the past when they used it....sometimes it can be shockingly correct.

So, who's going to win the Super Bowl this year according to Madden 16?

I think everyone is in for a shocker........

THE USB Roundtable: Benjamin/Nelson Injuries, Slumping Dodgers, Perfect Ohio St

In this edition of the Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable, Steve Cook, Dustin James, and myself discuss big injuries to top wide receivers, the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers, and Ohio State going undefeated.

1. Bigger injury for their team: Jordy Nelson or Kelvin Benjamin?

Steve CookEasily Kelvin Benjamin. Jordy's a better wide receiver, but Aaron Rodgers can throw it to whoever's out there & the Packers offense won't miss a beat. He's still got a WR1 in Randall Cobb. Who does Cam Newton have other than Kelvin Benjamin? Greg Olsen? Lambert will probably talk up this Devin Funchess kid, but I'm not buying it until I see it. Rodgers will keep doing what he does: throw all over the place & score tons of points, and Newton will keep doing what he does: run for his life thanks to having no receivers & no offensive line.

Jeremy Lambert: IT'S KELVIN BENJAMIN! THE ONLY CORRECT ANSWER IS KELVIN BENJAMIN! AARON RODGERS IS GOING TO BE FINE PASSING TO RANDALL COBB AND WHOEVER ELSE THEY HAVE! CAM NEWTON THROWS EVERY BALL TEN FEET TOO HIGH BUT KELVIN BENJAMIN IS A MONSTER WHO CAN GO UP AND CATCH IT! NOW WHO IS GOING TO CATCH IT? SIGN RANDY MOSS!!!!!

Dustin JamesThis one is easy. It's Kelvin Benjamin. Jordy Nelson's loss is a big one for Green Bay, but they have guys who can step in and make up for his production like Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. Plus, Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the National Football League and you could give him the Cleveland Browns' wide receivers and he would make them look like gold. The Packers will definitely miss Nelson, but they will be fine in the long haul. The Carolina Panthers on the other hand are really going to be feeling the loss of Kelvin Benjamin. It's no secret that Cam Newton is not near the quarterback that Rodgers is and he needs all the help he can get. Benjamin had an excellent rookie year and all signs were pointing towards him continuing to be a major impact in the Panthers offense and then boooooom. Now who is left to replace his production? The unproven rookie Devin Funchess? Ted Ginn? Jerricho Cotchery? Yikes. Just when I was starting to feel good about the future of Cam Newton, this comes along. I'm sorry Panthers fans.

2. Will the Los Angeles Dodgers win the NL West?

SC: The Dodgers are certainly in a bad way right now, going 5-10 in their last 15 games. The trades they made to acquire the likes of Mat Latos & Alex Wood haven't really panned out. The bullpen is a mess, the offense is non-existent, and everybody expects the Giants to pass the Dodgers in the standings any day now. We've been expecting it all season, really. But it's not like the Giants have been setting the world on fire either, losing series to St. Louis & Pittsburgh last week. They get Chicago & St. Louis this week while the Dodgers will look to pad their division lead in Cincinnati against the sorry, no-account Reds before hosting the Cubs.

I expect the Dodgers to retain the division lead for now. The teams' schedules are fairly equal, with a lot of intra-division games for both teams before the season ends, including 3 games between the 2 teams in Los Angeles & 4 games in San Francisco. The Giants have 3 more games at home than the Dodgers do, and I think the teams are equal enough that that will make the difference, especially since the Dodgers have a woeful road record this season while the Giants are acceptably mediocre outside of San Fran. Giants take the NL West.

JL: They're faltering right now, but the Giants aren't doing much better. Both teams have series coming up with the Cubs, but the Giants have to face the Cardinals while the Dodgers get the Reds before they play a three game series against each other. I'll assume that the Dodgers will have more momentum heading into that series since they should handle the Reds while the Giants might struggle with the Cardinals. I always overrate the Dodgers, I'm pretty sure I picked them to be in the World Series last year, so I'm going to continue to overrate them and predict that they'll hold on to the division crown.

DJYes. The Dodgers are slumping right now, but they will get things turned around soon. If not, it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong about a baseball division race.

3. True or False: Ohio State will go undefeated this season.

SC: Let's take a look at the schedule & find out.

At Virginia Tech: Never easy to go into Blacksburg & get a win, but after last year's loss to the Hokies you gotta know the Buckeyes will be more than ready for this one. 1-0

Versus Hawaii, Northern Illinois & Western Michigan: 4-0, nothing to see here.

At Indiana: Every time I make fun of IU's football program Dustin James has flashbacks to the time they beat Oregon & gets really upset. But 5-0.

Versus Maryland: The Terps are legit in basketball, but this isn't basketball. 6-0.

Versus Penn State: Could be a challenging one. I think the Nittany Lions keep it close but OSU pulls it out late. 7-0.

At Rutgers: Come on now. I vote we take this off the schedule & put Wisconsin on to make things more interesting. 8-0.

Versus Minnesota, At Illinois: 10-0.

This is where things get real interesting...

Versus Michigan State: Sparty is ranked #5 in the preseason. We never really know if that means anything in August, but they're usually in Big 10 title contention & there's no reason to currently think that this game won't have playoff implications. Close, low-scoring game that I'm giving to the Buckeyes to make things more dramatic... 11-0.

At Michigan: That team up North. They've lost 10 of the last 11 times they've met the Buckeyes, but this is the first time they'll be coached by the man himself, Jim Harbaugh. You have to figure that Harbaugh will get the Wolverines on the right track, but will this year be soon enough for Michigan to beat Ohio?

Yeah, why not. It's just the kind of crazy thing that happens at the end of college football seasons. 11-1. My answer to the question is False.

JL: If they get by Virginia Tech on the road, things become pretty easy until the last two games on the schedule where they have to play Michigan St. and Michigan. I don't think they're going to win both of those games. Michigan St. should be good this season, they're ranked #5 in the preseason polls and our own Dustin James has them losing only one game this year, to Ohio St. That should be a close and competitive game though. Then there's Michigan under new coach Jim Harbaugh. That game is going to be treated as the biggest game of the year by just about everyone and Harbaugh is going to have the entire state fired up. Winning those games back-to-back is going to be extremely tough and I'm not sure Ohio St. will be able to do it, especially since some of those easy games will be tougher than expected given that the Buckeyes are the defending champs.

DJ: True. Anyone who saw the Ohio State Buckeyes dismantle Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks last year in the National Championship saw how good the Buckeyes are when it matters. Well I have bad news for everyone in college football. BASICALLY THAT WHOLE ENTIRE TEAM IS RETURNING! Ohio State is so loaded right now, they have three guys who could all start at QB for them and lead them to another National Title. It's just ridiculous. If anyone has a shot at beating Ohio State, it's going to be a team that they take lightly during the regular season, but as far as the post-season goes....this team is winning another National Title. Might as well start the celebration parade right now.

2015-16 NFL Pre-Season All-Division Teams

The 2015-16 Ultimate Sports Blog's NFL Preview continues along with a look at the best players from each respective division. In the NFL, your team's success always starts with what happens in the division during the regular season. During the regular season, it's imperative for a team to beat out the other 3 teams in the division and grab a playoff spot and cruise to the Super Bowl. Beating three other teams out for a playoff spot sounds pretty simple doesn't it? Try telling that to fans of teams like the Oakland Raiders or Jacksonville Jaguars.

Anyway, the following list should give you a good clue on how your team is stacking up against the other teams in your division as we head into the regular season in a few weeks. This is a pre-season list, so I expect the list at the end of the season to look drastically different than this one.....

The USB Roundtable: Tim Tebow, Team USA Basketball, and Punching NFL Players

In this edition of The Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable, Dustin James, Steve Cook and myself discuss Tim Tebow's chances of making the Philadelphia Eagles, our Team USA Basketball starting five, and which NFL player we'd like to punch.

True or False: Tim Tebow will make the Eagles opening week roster.

Steve CookFalse. I know that Timmy is everybody's favorite story, ESPN loves him & somehow the fate of a third string QB is considered relevant. But let's be real here...third string QB is not even a position that exists on most NFL teams. They usually have a dude on the practice squad if things get real hairy. Tebow's not going to pass Sam Bradford or Matt Barkley on the depth chart. He might pass Sanchez. But he's not going any higher than 3rd string, and using that spot on a non-rookie not on the practice squad is iffy at best. It's not gonna happen.

Dustin JamesFalse. Can we stop it yet? Can we? CAN WE????? This Tim Tebow stuff has got to stop. The reason it really bugs me this time is because my main man, the Chipper (Chip Kelly), had to go out and bring Tim Tebow back into the NFL news fold and now people can't stop talking about a guy who's not even good enough to be a third string QB in the NFL. I don't know if this is breaking news to people, but Tim Tebow can't throw a football worth a damn. It's been proven time and time again. One of the greatest NFL head coaches of all-time (Bill Belichick) couldn't fix Tebow's broken QB mechanics and as much as I love Chip, he's not going to do it either. Tebow's just a fun training camp story that is a long shot to make the roster and if he does it's only for reasons that involve QB running packages in the red zone. The Eagles already have 3 QB's on the depth chart ahead of Tebow (Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, and Matt Barkley) and I can't see them getting rid of any of those guy's or keeping a 4th QB on the 52-man roster. Chip Kelly does some crazy shit, but keeping Tim Tebow on his game day NFL roster would take the cake.

Jeremy Lambert: True. That's right, TRUE. The Eagles will trade Mark Sanchez, probably to the Jets or the Bills, and Quarterback Jesus will be on the opening week roster. Chip Kelly is an offensive-minded coach, and even though I doubt Tebow will play a snap, having him on the roster means that the opposing team has to prepare for him. If Chip can force the opposition to spend even five minutes preparing for zone reads and quarterback draws, that's five minutes they lose preparing for Chip's actual gameplan of Sam Bradford getting injured.

Name your starting five for Team USA Basketball in 2016.

SCI didn't watch any of the scrimmage stuff over the weekend. I don't care about preseason football, but I'll watch it over USA basketball scrimmages because it's not basketball season. It's cute how they're trying to be year-round news like the NFL is, but I'm not buying it. Sorry. Off the top of my head I'll go LeBron, Durant, Curry, Davis and Harden. Probably some position overlap there but oh,well.

DJMy starting five would be DeMarcus Cousins at Center. Anthony Davis at Power Forward. LeBron James at Small Forward. Kevin Durant at Shooting Guard (Why? Because I can). And Russell Westbrook at Point Guard. Good luck beating that team. Even if you won't let me keep Durant in at SG, I'll just substitute him with James Harden and tell Davis to shadow him on defense. That team would have the potential to be the greatest of all-time, with all apologies to the "Dream Team"......

JL: International play means small ball, so I'm going with Steph Curry as my point guard, Russell Westbrook as my shooting guard, Kevin Durant at small forward, LeBron James at power forward, and Anthony Davis in the middle. All of them bring something different to the table and they can all score in bunches. I could see Chris Paul or James Harden starting over Westbrook, but the other four seem pretty locked in to me.

Which NFL player would you like to punch in the jaw if he owed your $600?

SCThe answer has to be Johnny Manziel, right? He's a cocky son of a gun that hasn't accomplished anything in the league, keeps saying he's learning but isn't, and he plays for the Browns. He's gotta be top 5 easiest to hate in the history of the league. And if you punch him it's not like he'll kick your ass. He might get somebody else to do it, which just solidifies my answer.

DJIs it OK if I say John Elway? I still would love to punch that guy in the face for some reason (maybe his douchey smile?). Maybe it's because I'm a Kansas City Chiefs fan and the Broncos are our more successful rivals and Elway is a big part of that reason? Ya, that's probably it. Anyway, if it has to be a current player, I guess I would have to say Peyton Manning. I think I've made it pretty clear that I don't like the Denver Broncos. The thing about Peyton is, I didn't like him even before he was the Broncos QB because the son of a bitch was so good on the Colts that he constantly beat the Chiefs, even in the post-season. I got a glimmer of hope when Peyton became a free agent a few years back and there was rumors that the Chiefs were the first team to offer him a contract. I thought, "Hey perfect! We're finally getting a good QB!". Then it happened. John Elway and the Broncos swooped in and stole Peyton before the Chiefs ever really even had a chance. Ahhh, screw it. My final answer is John Elway. I don't care about the rules.

JL: Ray Rice. No explanation needed.

2015-16 NFL Fantasy Football Rankings

Every year I get the same questions about this time.

"Would you take so-and-so over so-and-so in fantasy football?"

"Is blah blah blah worth a second-round pick?"

"Am I crazy to draft a defense so early?" (YES.....yes you are)

Well, I've once again created a nice little guide to answer those kind of questions. One of my job's here at THE Ultimate Sports Blog is to write-up a preview for every single NFL team each year. That means I'm getting pretty in-depth with each NFL roster and that gives me a nice little heads up in fantasy football as we gear towards the season. I'm here to share what information I've gathered (both from my own opinion and from the hundreds of NFL writers I follow on Twitter) and I've created my own set of fantasy football rankings that I highly recommend you use when doing your draft this year.

Get it?

Got it?

The Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable: NFL Fights, Michael Jordan One-on-One, Toronto Blue Jays

In this edition of the Ultimate Sports Blog Roundtable, Dustin James, Steve Cook, and myself discuss NFL training camp fights, playing Michael Jordan one-on-one, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Training Camp Fights: Yay or Nay?

Steve Cook: Football players are violent people. Let's just put that out in the open as an undisputable fact. You gotta be combative if you want to make it all the way to the highest level of professional football. One of the main aspects of the game is tackling people. Until they switch the NFL to flag football, violence is going to be a common presence & a common attribute among the best in the game. Training camp fights are only natural because the players haven't been in that type of situation for awhile. The competitive juices start flowing again, they remember what it's like to hit & be hit...fights are going to happen. And if they are, it's for the best that they happen in a controlled situation like training camp where there are plenty of other people around to break things up.
Look at it this way: at least they aren't getting into fights with their wives, girlfriends or children.

Dustin James: I kind of lean towards the middle, but I'll go with "yay". Training camp fights aren't exactly a bad thing as long as they don't get too serious (can we keep the helmets on fellas?). Everyone knows that football is a violent sport. When you watch it on television, there's almost a scuffle after every play. That's just what happens when you get testosterone-filled men running into each other at fast speeds. Guys get angry and start swinging at each other. It's almost inevitable that it's going to happen at training camp. If it happens on-the-field, why wouldn't it happen when NFL players are going through the most stressful time of the season (training camp can be a bitch for NFL players)?

If I was a coach and my team wasn't getting into fights during training camp, I would start to worry about their competitive nature and overall softness of the team. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I want my football team filled with guys who want to win football games and will tear their opponents heads off to accomplish just that. Those kind of guys are getting into fights at training camps because that's how competitive people are. Plus, fighting sometimes can build more camaraderie with the players. Everyone knows that after you fight someone, you usually like them more. That's never a bad thing. But like I said earlier, they can't be getting too serious because you don't want anyone suffering any kind of serious injury over a stupid training camp fight. Can you imagine what would have happened in Carolina had Cam Newton gotten injured during the scuffle with Josh Norman? We probably would've seen the last of Ron Rivera in Carolina so I also totally understand why NFL coaches can hate it. As a fan though? Give me more.

Jeremy Lambert: Nine out of ten times I'm all for training camp fights, but the one time I'm against them happened on Monday when Cam Newton got into a scuffle with Josh Norman. On one hand, it shows that Cam is already in compete mode and ready for the season to start. On the other hand I don't want my franchise quarterback getting hurt over something dumb like an interception thrown in practice.

Most of the time training camp fights happened between two fringe players on the offensive and defensive lines who are just sick of running into each other over and over again, but when your franchise player is involved, it becomes a bit of a worry. I think training camp fights can actually bring the team closer together and I'm hoping that's the case with the Panthers.

Who would you take to beat Michael Jordan (in his prime) in a game of one on one?

SC: I immensely dislike this question for a number of reasons. First of all, basketball is a team sport. The one on one thing is a nice little debate to have when we're high or drunk, but until somebody makes a league out of it & it supersedes the NBA in popularity, it's irrelevant. It does not matter if LeBron James can beat all the Golden State Warriors individually in games of one on one, what matters is his team can't beat them.
Secondly, can we please stop comparing everybody to Michael Jordan? I know it's probably impossible at this point, but the MJ vs. Whoever debate has been driven into the ground in the 17 years since he retired. (I don't recognize the Wizards years as having happened.) I don't need ESPN reporting every time somebody asks Jordan about a current player, nor do I need to know if current players think they could take Jordan in his prime. And why is basketball the only sport that does this? You don't see Mike Trout being asked if he could hit a home run off of Roger Clemens, or Calvin Johnson being asked if he could score a touch down with Deion Sanders covering him. It's all so stupid.
So, to answer this insipid question, I say that LeBron, KD, Russ Westbrook, Kobe, Damian Lillard & Kendrick Perkins could all beat MJ one time in a game of one on one. Because people get lucky.

DJ: The correct answer is "no one", but if I'm forced to take someone, I'm taking LeBron James. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player that ever lived (and is my all-time favorite athlete). He would destroy anyone he faced in a one-on-one encounter on a basketball court, with all due respect to guys like LeBron and Kobe Bryant. However, if I had a million dollars in my hand and had to lay it down on an NBA superstar past or present to beat Jordan, my money's going on LeBron.  Either way, it doesn't matter because it's a stupid argument anyway because basketball is a five-on-five game. It's like NFL fans arguing over who's running back is faster because he ran a quicker 40-yard dash at the Combine, even though that has absolutely nothing to do with his in-game speed with pads on. Some sports arguments are just the worst.

JL: Like my colleagues have said, basketball is a team game and one-on-one debates are pretty dumb, but this is a hot story right now (and will continue to be a hot story for years to come) and I'm all about those clicks. If I had my choice, I'd take Kevin Durant. LeBron is unquestionably the best player in the NBA right now, but he's great within the team game. He's not a great shooter and if you can't shoot against Jordan, you're going to be in a lot of trouble because baskets won't come that easy. Durant has the shooting ability and the size to matchup against MJ so I'd take my chances with The Real MVP.

Are the Toronto Blue Jays now the favorites to win the World Series?

SC: The Blue Jays are certainly on a roll since the trade deadline. They're shutting the Yankees out in Yankee Stadium. They're fighting with the Royals. David Price has gone back to being David Price instead of whatever he was in Detroit. Troy Tulowitzki is showing people that it wasn't just the thin Denver air that made him one of the most dangerous hitters in the game. Oh, and guys like Jose Bautista & Edwin Encarnacion that were already there are on hot streaks. Certainly, if the season ended today, you would have to think that the Blue Jays & New York Mets would be hooking up in the World Series.

But the thing about baseball is that it's a 162 game season with peaks & valleys. Teams get hot all the time. Teams get cold all the time. Sure, the Blue Jays are hot now, but it's not going to be this way for the entirety of September & October. That's why, at the end of the day, I still give the AL advantage to the Kansas City Royals, a team that was there last year & knows how to get it done in the postseason. And even though the St. Louis Cardinals are so beat up & might end up losing their division to the Pittsburgh Pirates if it keeps up, I'm not counting them out until they're officially eliminated.

DJ: I'm tempted to say "yes" here because the Blue Jays are absolutely rolling right now, but I'm still liking the Kansas City Royals as the team to beat for the World Series. The Royals were so close to winning it last year and they look every bit as good (or even better) as last year's team and I just feel more comfortable putting my eggs in that basket. The Royals showed last post-season that their style of baseball can be tough to beat, especially when October rolls around. I think they're even better this year and are the team to beat in MLB, with all apologies to the Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals fans.

JL: They were my big winners from the trade deadline and so far they haven't disappointed. The playoffs are a different animal though. Most of the Blue Jays players haven't been there and who knows how they'll respond to the pressure. The Royals have the best record in the AL and were in the World Series last year, the Cardinals are still a force, and don't sleep on the Giants to make a late push.
