Overlook: It seems like every four or five years or so, the New York Giants make a Super Bowl appearance doesn't it? There aren't a lot of teams in the National Football League that are a consistent presence in the biggest football game of the year, but somehow the blue fellas in New York have made it their job to do exactly that. With 3 Super Bowl appearances in the 2000's already under their belts, a flashy wide receiver that everyone is falling in love with, a QB that "wants to be the highest paid QB in the league", and a defense that looks pretty solid....are the Giants SERIOUSLY good enough to return to the big game?
On offense, people are concerned with two things. Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. The amount of TV coverage that OBJ is going to get this year is going to be ridiculous, but well deserved. He's good and by the end of the year it wouldn't surprise me to see him mentioned as the best wide receiver in the league. Eli Manning is Eli Manning. He's proven that he's good enough to win your team a Super Bowl, but he's not good enough to consistently be considered an "elite" NFL QB. The Giants shouldn't have to worry about Eli, as long as the good one shows up. The good one should show up more often than not, especially with the help the offensive line is getting this season. Geoff Schwartz is back and healthy and if the Giants can get anything out of rookie Ereck Flowers, that will be a huge plus. I'm not too worried about the Giants offense as they don't have a whole lot of true weaknesses (running game needs to improve though).
Defensively, the Giants could use an upgrade at linebacker as J.T. Thomas and Jon Beason have got to go, but everywhere else is pretty lined up. The defensive line is stacked and will have no trouble rushing the quarterback, no matter how many fingers Jason Pierre-Paul has. The secondary also gets a thumbs up, but they are really going to need rookie Landon Collins to make an impact. The draft wasn't exactly loaded at the safety position this year and Collins was a big fish in a small pond. He needs to prove to everyone that he's an NFL player and he's definitely going to get the opportunity this year. So, like I said, on paper....this defense looks pretty good. They definitely need to play better than they played last year if they hope to return to the Super Bowl this year, but something tells me Tom Coughlin and company are up for that challenge. Watch out for "Big Blue" this year. Don't say I didn't warn you.
