College Football Round-Up: Week Eight

Week eight of the college football season is in the books. Why waste time with a silly introduction when we have so much stuff to get to this week? So......

ARE YOU READY?????..................

I SAID............

ARE YOU READY??????????............

WELL...................

LETTTTTTTTT'S GET READY TO FUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLEEEEEEEEEEEE...........

Top 25 Scoreboard:
(A recap of all the action involving the top 25 teams in college football)

(1) Ohio State (8-0): 49     Rutgers (3-4): 7

Where all the Buckeyes haters at this week? Oh, that's right. When Ohio State actually plays like they should, the critics all go out and hide. Anyway, like I've mentioned all-year with this team. Go ahead and jump off the bandwagon if you dare. When they're hoisting the trophy at the end of the year, I'll be over here like....

(2) Utah (6-1): 24     USC (4-3): 42

And thank you for coming Utah!

I have to admit. I'm a little disappointed in Utah. I think they were a little bit of "fool's gold" after their crushing defeat over the Oregon Ducks, but let me explain before you jump down my throat. You see, I think Utah crushed Oregon because they wanted to. Last year they lost to the Ducks (who have arguably been the "kings" of the Pac-12 since the Utes arrived in the conference) by a few bonehead mistakes. They probably should have beaten Oregon last year and that was definitely still on their minds this season. These guys were ultra-motivated to blow the doors off of the Ducks and Oregon wasn't ready for it (let's also remember that Urban Meyer is great friends with Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and no doubt gave him some pointers on how to beat Oregon). What resulted was Utah absolutely bludgeoning the Ducks and everyone (myself included) falling in love with them. Why? BECAUSE ANY TEAM THAT DOES TO OREGON MUST BE GOOD!

Not so fast my friend!

Here we are a few weeks later and it's safe to say that Oregon is nowhere near the team they were last year (a team Utah should've beat, remember) and that game may have been the "peak" of Utah's success this season. Ever since that game in Eugene, Oregon....Utah just hasn't looked as good and they blew it yesterday with a crushing loss to USC. Better luck next year Utah.

What about USC though?

Does anyone else find it humorous that the Trojans can't seem to amount to jack crap when they have a head coach in place but the minute an "interim" head coach comes into the game, it's like USC is a "National Championship Contender" again. Coaching. IT MATTERS PEOPLE!!!!

(4) Clemson (7-0): 58      Miami (4-3): 0

If Al Golden isn't fired as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes this week, something is wrong at that university. There's just no excuse for a team with a history like Miami has to be getting crushed 58-0 at home! No excuse. I know Clemson is one of the best teams in college football, but how the hell do you get SHUT OUT AT HOME? Oh, that's right. BECAUSE THE HURRICANES ARE AWFUL! Remember what I just said about how coaching matters in the sport of football? This game is the perfect case study for that. Dabo Swinney is an excellent coach and Clemson is playing like the best team in the ACC and one that is definitely in contention for a playoff spot. Miami is a dumpster fire who is losing recruits left and right because their head coach can't get the program back to where it should be. It's tough to be a Hurricane right now.....

(5) Baylor (7-0): 45     Iowa State (2-5): 27

Baylor beats another mediocre team by piling on points and playing lackluster defense.

I've seen some people constantly call Baylor one of the best teams in the sport. You guys go ahead and run that bandwagon into the ground, why don't you? Meanwhile, I'll be sitting over here continuously looking at Baylor with a side-eye because I know what they are. Don't get mad at me Baylor fan. Tell your team to actually play someone worth a damn and I'll give you more respect. Your non-conference schedule has been a joke ever since you've been relevant, yet you constantly whine and bitch about not getting respect from anyone. PLAY THE BIG BOYS OF THE SPORT AND WE'LL GIVE YOU RESPECT!

You know what Baylor is? Baylor is "Oregon-lite". They score a lot of points. They have flashy uniforms. They play fast. They don't have a good defense. And just like the Ducks, Baylor will get crushed when they have to play a really good physical team. Mark my words.

(6) LSU (7-0): 48      Western Kentucky (6-2): 20

(7) Michigan State (8-0): 52     Indiana (4-4): 26

This game was probably a lot closer than Michigan State fans wanted it to be.....and then the fourth quarter arrived. Give some credit to Indiana because the Hoosiers were actually sticking around with the Spartans for the majority of the game until the Spartans blew the roof off the thing. Michigan State scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to remain in the College Football Playoff hunt. Can we just fast forward time and get to Michigan State vs. Ohio State yet? It's pretty clear that those two teams are the best teams in the BIG 10 (with respect to Michigan of course) and that game in late November will probably have a spot in the CFP on the line. Oh, screw it. I'm going to watch it right now. Later suckers.....

(8) Florida State (6-1): 16      Georgia Tech (3-5): 22

Oh, you thought Michigan State vs. Michigan last week was a wild finish?

THAT. JUST. HAPPENED!

Sorry FSU. You're probably still in the "playoff hunt" if you can run the table and beat Clemson, but the path there just got a lot more difficult and now you can't afford to slip up again AT ALL! Let's give some props to Georgia Tech though. The Yellow Jackets didn't really have a whole lot left to play for this season (they were riding a 5-game losing streak going into this game), but they showed up here and definitely gave the Seminoles more of a fight than they thought they were going to get.

That finish though........

(9) Oklahoma State (7-0): 58      Kansas (0-7): 10

Why are we still letting Kansas play FBS football? Shouldn't they be in the FCS?

(11) Alabama (7-1): 19      Tennessee (3-4): 14

Tennessee showed up this week and gave the Crimson Tide a fight, but it just wasn't enough. Am I the only one who's noticed how impressive Tennessee has been this year? Yes, the Vols are 3-4, but they are seriously THIS close to being 7-0. All four of Tennessee's losses have been one score games and are games in which Tennessee has actually been IN towards the end. That's not exactly something Tennessee teams of the recent past could have claimed. This is a very improved team and it wouldn't shock me at all to see them make it into a bowl game, even with the current record they are sporting. All five of their remaining games are extremely winnable. Don't be shocked if Tennessee runs the table from here on out and finishes 8-4 with a decent bowl game. As for Alabama? They're going to the playoff. Don't be crazy.

(12) Stanford (6-1): 31     Washington (3-4): 14

Stanford is the "King of the PAC-12" this year. They are head and shoulders better than every other team in the conference this season and it shouldn't be a matter of "IF" Stanford wins the PAC-12, but a matter of "IF" Stanford can sneak into the College Football Playoff as PAC-12 champs. Let's take a look at their remaining schedule:

vs. Washington State

All of a sudden Wazzu is playing good football and they might be the second best team in the PAC-12 North this year. This is far from a lock for Stanford, but they should end up with the win.

vs. Colorado

Bitch, please.

vs. Oregon

The Ducks are a hard team to read this season and could upset the Cardinal, but I wouldn't bet my money on it. Stanford has had Oregon's number recently and that will probably continue this year.

vs. California

Cal's one of those sneaky teams that could beat Stanford, but this rivalry has been extremely lopsided these last few seasons in Stanford's favor.

vs. Notre Dame

Easily Stanford's toughest game left and if they can beat the Irish, they will probably make the CFP.

So, is Stanford a potential playoff team?

(14) Memphis (7-0): 66      Tulsa (3-4): 42

Still sleeping on the Memphis Tigers? Well, WAKE UP PEOPLE! This team is for real. Now, I'm going to pump the brakes a little bit on this team real fast. Do I think the Memphis Tigers are one of the top 15 teams in the sport right now? Yes. Do I think the Memphis Tigers are capable of earning a playoff spot and making a legitimate run at a National Championship?

Let's be real people. The Memphis Tigers are a good little team, but this team is not capable of playing with the big boys of the sport. Sure the Memphis Tigers can put up some points, but would they be able to put up points against the Ohio States, Alabamas, and Utah's of the sport? Would their lackluster defense be able to stop teams like LSU, Stanford, Baylor or TCU? Ummmm...yikes. That's really all I can say. Now, don't get me wrong. I like this Memphis team and I absolutely love their head coach Justin Fuente, but let's pump the brakes on these guys a little. They aren't making a playoff run.

(16) Texas A&M (5-2): 3      (25) Ole Miss (6-2): 23

I give up trying to figure out who's good and who's just a fraud in the SEC. Ole Miss is just confusing to me and are definitely one of the most "bi-polar" teams in college football. One week they look like "world beaters" (beating a team like Texas A&M like they did on Saturday is very impressive for the Rebels) and the week before that, they are losing to a team that historically is a joke in the sport (Memphis). Hugh Freeze is one of those coaches who is going to make you pull your hair out with things like that. So, have the Rebels got this thing turned figured out? Time will tell. With big match-ups on the horizon against Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, and a rivalry game against Mississippi State...Ole Miss is far from a lock to play in the SEC title game. If they are able to run that gauntlet unscathed though and Alabama takes another loss? Watch out for the Rebels people.

(17) Houston (7-0): 59     UCF (0-8): 10

(18) Oklahoma (7-1): 63     Texas Tech (5-3): 27

How does Oklahoma get beat by Texas and come out and blow the doors off a better team in Texas Tech?

Got'cha.

(19) Duke (6-1): 45     Virginia Tech (3-5): 43

Duke is arguably one of the best teams in the ACC.

Virginia Tech is a dumpster fire and Frank Beamer should be fired.

(20) Toledo (7-0): 51     UMass (1-6): 35

You think I'm actually going to talk about a MAC football game?

(21) California (5-2): 24     UCLA (5-2): 40

Well Cal.....

Yes, it was cute while it lasted. Unfortunately, the Cal Golden Bears just aren't there yet and frankly, I don't know if they ever will be. Jared Goff is presumably going to be the top pick in the NFL Draft next spring and if he leaves, one would have to assume that Cal will take a step back after losing their coveted gun-slinger. So, like I said.....THANKS FOR COMING TO THE PARTY CAL! Kindly shut the door on your way out.

(23) Temple (7-0): 24     East Carolina (4-4): 14

TEMPLE BABY!

Do the Temple Owls have a shot at making a run at the College Football Playoff?

Not a chance in hell.

Is it going to be fun watching this team flirt with a potential spot though?

That looks like a "yes" to me.

(24) Pittsburgh (6-1): 23     Syracuse (3-4): 20

Anyone care? ANYONE?????????

Upsets Of The Week
(There are upsets every week in college football. These are the best upsets for this week)

-Georgia Tech over Florida State

I already talked about this game, but the ending was so awesome, let's talk about it again! This wasn't supposed to happen for FSU. Georgia Tech was riding a 5 game losing streak going into this game and FSU was undefeated. The Seminoles should've walked through the Yellow Jackets, but for some reason...Georgia Tech always plays FSU tough and yesterday's game was no exception. This was a big win for Georgia Tech and the ending was absolutely spectacular and was one of the best I've ever seen. I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!

-USC over Utah

I already mentioned this game earlier and I'm still disappointed in Utah. I THOUGHT YOU WERE BETTER THAN THAT UTES! Just when you guys finally arrived and were bumping elbows with the "big boys of the sport", you go and drop your pants and get bitch slapped by a USC team that just fired their head coach. One thing is for sure. Whoever inherits this USC team is arguably getting handed a "National Championship contending" team. Not a lot of job openings that are as good as this one.
