College Football Round-Up: Week Six

Week six of the college football season is in the books. We don't have much time for an introduction this week, so let's get right to business.

ARE YOU READY?????..................

I SAID............

ARE YOU READY??????????............

WELL...................

LETTTTTTTTT'S GET READY TO FUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLEEEEEEEEEEEE...........

Top 25 Scoreboard:
(A recap of all the action involving the top 25 teams in college football)

(1) Ohio State (6-0): 49     Maryland (2-4): 28

Once again, the Ohio State Buckeyes start out slowly and start getting everyone on social media in an uproar about how "overrated" they are. Like I said last week, the Buckeyes appear to be playing down to their opponents level, but I'm still not worried about this team. I still think they have the most talent, one of the best head coaches in the sport, and one of the easiest paths to the playoffs. Go ahead and jump off the Ohio State bandwagon all you want people. I like having all this room to myself....

(2) Utah (5-0): 30     (25) California (5-1): 24

What a game between two of the best teams in the PAC-12. Utah came out guns blazing (copyright Greg Hardy) against the top quarterback prospect in the Nation and were able to squeak out another big-time conference win. Is everyone sold on Utah yet? How come I'm still hearing people talk bad about the Utes? What else do these guys have to do to earn your respect? They murdered Oregon at home in Eugene. They beat Michigan back in week one (and right now, Michigan looks like "world beaters"). And now the Utes come out and beat a very good Cal team and people are still giving Utah the "side-eye" for some reason. Breaking news people! This is a VERY good and VERY well-coached football team. If you aren't buying Utah as a playoff contender, than you frankly don't know shit about the game of football. Also, give some props to Sonny Dyke and the Cal Bears here. Even though the Utes were able to pick up the victory, the Golden Bears put up a hell of a fight and they are a legit contender to get into the PAC-12 championship game, especially if Stanford slips up. PAC-12 AFTER DARK BABY!!!!

(3) TCU (6-0): 52     (17) Kansas State (3-2): 45

You still sweating TCU fans? You should have been, because Bill Snyder almost struck again. Is it just me or is Snyder one of the most underrated college football coaches of all-time? The guy never gets the respect he deserves and he's easily one of the best coaches in the sport. No one was giving K-State much of a chance against TCU this weekend, but Snyder and his boys almost came away with the victory and stomped a mud-hole right through TCU's playoff chances. Unfortunately the Wildcats forgot that the game of football was four quarters long and not just two quarters. After scoring 35 first-half points and holding TCU to just 17 points, things went awry in the second-half. TCU's offense finally exploded like a cork on a champagne bottle as they went on to score 35 second-half points of their own and held the Wildcats to just 10 points in the second-half. This was definitely a game of "two halves" for both teams. TCU survives again though. By the skin of their teeth.

(4) Clemson (5-0): 43      Georgia Tech (2-4): 24

Clemson has been one of the top teams in the Nation through the first month. They definitely look like the top team in the ACC.

Georgia Tech was predicted to be one of the top teams in the Nation. They definitely look like one of the worst teams in the ACC.

(5) Oklahoma (4-1): 17     Texas (2-4): 24

Oh man. You gotta love the "Red River Rivalry". Just in case you forgot, here's a quick recap of what's happened so far this college football season for both these teams:

Oklahoma - Has looked like a legitimate College Football Playoff team in their first four victories. So much so, that I moved them all the way from the teens to a top 5 ranking.

Texas - Has been a dumpster fire. So much so, that Charlie Strong has been put on the "hot seat" by Longhorns fans after a disappointing two-year start. Texas even had a player tweeting about transferring during halftime of last week's blowout loss to TCU.

With that said, it only makes sense that Texas would come out and pull off a ginormous upset against the Sooners, right? BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED! Once again, Oklahoma comes out and blows it like they do every year, only this time they blew it against one of their most hated rivals. BOOMER SOONER? Not so fast my friends! HOOK 'EM HORNS!

(7) Baylor (5-0): 66      Kansas (0-5): 7

Oh, look at that. Baylor came out and scored 60+ points against a team that would probably struggle with the majority of high school teams across the United States...

(8) Michigan State (6-0): 31     Rutgers (2-3): 24

The Michigan State Spartans are not as good as we thought they were. After their victory over the Oregon Ducks back in week two, everyone started buying up Michigan State stock like it was on clearance. Now that the Ducks have been exposed as a mediocre football team, people are selling that Michigan State stock as quickly as they bought it all up. If the Spartans are as good of a football team as everyone thinks, they should have come out and absolutely housed Rutgers. Rutgers is not a good team people and if the Spartans are a top-10 team like we all thought they were, they should have dominated them (Penn State beat Rutgers 28-3 back in week 3). I'm selling my Michigan State stock to anyone who's looking to buy any. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go ahead and go out on a limb and announce that next week the Michigan Wolverines will blast the Michigan State Spartans! That's right, I said it. Don't be surprised when it happens.

(9) Florida (6-0): 21      Missouri (4-2): 3

Florida Gators anyone?

(10) Northwestern (5-1): 0      (18) Michigan (5-1): 38

Can we get a round of applause for the Michigan Wolverines?

Michigan is doing it right guys. After years of mediocrity under Brady Hoke and countless other scrubs, the higher-ups at Michigan went out and got their guy. It took some maneuvering and a lot of praying, but when the Michigan Wolverines hired Jim Harbaugh away from the NFL, everyone knew it was only a matter of time before Michigan football was BACK! When would it arrive though? Next year? Two years from now? Hell, sometimes it can take a coach up to three years to finally get a program where he wants it to be. NOT JIM HARBAUGH THOUGH! Oh no! Allow me to run up to the tallest building in Ann Arbor, open up the window, grab my megaphone and proclaim loudly that MICHIGAN FOOTBALL IS OFFICIALLY BACK! Yes, everyone thought it would take Harbaugh a couple of seasons to get this thing turned around. You thought wrong. Harbaugh has got these guys playing some of the best football in the land and I'm officially on the bandwagon. The Wolverines just posted their third straight consecutive shutout! You know how impressive it is to shutout just ONE team in college football much less THREE IN A ROW? Sorry for all the CAPS HERE BUT OH MY GOD.....THESE GUYS ARE GOOD FOLKS! Northwestern was a legit team and the Wolverines just beat them up. Does Harbaugh have the Wolverines ready to make a run at the playoffs this year? He has to get through Michigan State and Ohio State still, but I'm all aboard the "Harbaugh Train". You'd better hurry and jump aboard though. It's quickly filling up.

(11) Florida State (5-0): 29      Miami (FL) (3-2): 24

Anytime Florida State beats Miami....

#Unconquered

(12) LSU (5-0): 45     South Carolina (2-4): 24

LSU and Leonard Fournette continue to roll. No surprise here. LSU is a legitimate playoff contender while South Carolina is an absolute dumpster fire. The question I have is, how hot of a seat is Steve Spurrier sitting on right now in South Carolina? Does he continue to get a pass because he's the "ol' ball coach"? Or does he have a realistic chance of getting canned? The Gamecocks only have two wins this season and they only have about two more winnable games on their schedule. Would a four-win season in Columbia finally be enough to convince Spurrier to potentially retire or the Gamecocks athletic department to make a move if Spurrier wishes to continue? This could start to become an interesting plot development as the season continues.

(13) Oklahoma State (6-0): 33      West Virginia (3-2): 26

My reaction when people tell me they don't think Oklahoma State is a very good football team:

(14) Alabama (5-1): 27      Arkansas (2-4): 14

Looks like we all might have written off Alabama a little too quick once again this season....

(16) Notre Dame (5-1): 41     Navy (4-1): 24

This game was one of those games that no one was talking about heading into the weekend, but was still on my radar. Navy is an underrated football team in my eyes. Now, I'm not going to go out on a limb and proclaim them as realistic "playoff contenders" or anything, but this is a very solid team. These guys are 25-14 over the last 3 seasons and were 4-0 heading into this match-up with the Irish. Not only that, but Navy has actually played the Irish pretty well the last few seasons. That's why I was kind of watching this game with a little bit of interest as I thought Notre Dame could have potentially been on an "upset alert". I was wrong. The Irish came out and got the job done and even though they remain a long shot to get back into the playoff hunt at the end of the year, you can never say never...especially in the sport of college football.

(19) Ole Miss (5-1): 52     New Mexico State (0-5): 3

Did anyone really think New Mexico State had a chance?

(20) USC (3-2): 12     Washington (3-2): 17

Anyone really shocked by this outcome? If you are a regular reader of my writing, you will know that I'm not a big fan of Steve Sarkisian at all. I think the guy is a good recruiter, but he's a horrible in-game coach. Once again, that gets proven as the Trojans get upset by a Washington Huskies team that is quietly revealing itself as a threat in the PAC-12 North. This just shouldn't happen with a team as talented as USC is. Since Sark arrived back in Los Angeles, he's built USC back into a five-star monster and the media and all the Trojans fans were eating it up. Some people even picked USC as a National Championship contender this year. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the background like.....

After this game was over, some USC fans were already calling for Sark's head. While I highly doubt he's going to get fired anytime soon, the pressure just got turned up for ol' Sarkie boy. If he can't get this thing turned around, the Trojans athletic department might start putting the pressure on a certain NFL head coach who is struggling right now to return to the college game where his style is more fitting. As a fan of another team in the PAC-12 though, I hope Sark stays around for awhile.

(22) Georgia (4-2): 31     Tennessee (3-3): 38

Yes, Georgia lost a football game here. Unfortunately for them, they lost something even more valuable though. In case you missed it, Georgia running back Nick Chubb went out with a horrible knee injury in the first offensive play of the game for the Bulldogs and it wasn't pretty. Chubb has been tearing it up so far this year and was well on his way to earning a spot in the Heisman Trophy presentation in January, but now he's going to be watching his team play the rest of the year from the sidelines. Just an unfortunate and horrible scenario for everyone involved. Is it just me or are the Georgia Bulldogs absolutely jinxed when it comes to their star running backs and knee injuries? Remember last year when it happened to Todd Gurley? Fast forward a year later and it's "deja vu" all over again as now it's Nick Chubb's turn. Man, you have to feel for this Georgia team. As for the Vols though? This was an absolutetly humongous win for this program who was looking for any kind of momentum after dropping two straight games. Can Tennessee keep it going and grab a hold of the SEC East title? STAY TUNED!

(24) Iowa (6-0): 29     Illinois (4-2): 20

Upsets Of The Week
(There are upsets every week in college football. These are the best upsets for this week)

-Washington State Cougars over Oregon Ducks

It's officially panic time in Eugene, Oregon folks. There's a lot wrong with this Oregon football team and it all starts at the top. How does a team that's more talented than the other team, blow a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter? Especially when you have one of the best collection of running backs in the sport? Because the head coach appears to be in over his head. Now, there's no way I'm calling for Mark Helfrich's head. It's probably too soon for that guy to be on the "hot seat" (he did get the Ducks to the "natty" last year, but anyone could have with a player like Marcus Mariota around), but his seat is definitely getting luke warm. This just isn't the same program it was when Chip Kelly was around. Chip's Ducks never lost to a team they shouldn't have lost to. This Oregon team has lost it's identity and if they don't make a bowl game this season (the odds are against that happening right now), it wouldn't surprise me to see the Oregon athletic department thinking about making a move. Personally, if they can't somehow lure Chip back to Eugene, I think they need to move on and find a whole new identity and not promote from within like the Ducks are used to. Look at programs like Michigan and Florida who went out and got new head coaches who have come in and immediately shot that program back up to respectability. If Oregon doesn't make a bowl game this year, that might be something that needs to happen in Eugene as well. Losing to Wazzu at home is just downright despicable.

-Washington Huskies over USC Trojans

Apparently it was a good week to be a college football fan in the beautiful state of Washington. We touched on this one earlier, so there's no reason to re-visit what I already said (SARK SUCKS!).

-Texas Longhorns over Oklahoma Sooners

We are discussed this at length earlier, and yes....it's still unbelievable. I don't think people realize just how bad Texas was playing football before this game. Oklahoma gonna Oklahoma.

-South Florida Bulls over Syracuse Orange

The South Florida Bulls are not a good football team. You want to know how bad of a football team they are? Well, they were 1-3 heading into this game against Syracuse. You want to know their record over the last 4 years? Come on! I can keep going! 5-7. 3-9. 2-10. & 4-8. And this team just beat an ACC team you guys! YIKES!
