College Football Round-Up: Week Eleven

Week eleven of the college football season is in the books. We are officially just WEEKS away from crowning a National Champion in this glorious sport. If you are confused as to everything that happened on this absolutely insane weekend......

So............

ARE YOU READY?????..................

I SAID............

ARE YOU READY??????????............

WELL...................

LETTTTTTTTT'S GET READY TO FUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLEEEEEEEEEEEE...........

Top 25 Scoreboard:
(A recap of all the action involving the top 25 teams in college football)

(1) Ohio State (10-0): 28     Illinois (5-5): 3

At this point, I'm not sure the Ohio State Buckeyes are ever going to lose another game as long as Urban Meyer is in town....

(2) Clemson (10-0): 37      Syracuse (3-7): 27

After a big win over Florida State last week, the Clemson Tigers came out and kind of shit the bed against a Syracuse team that isn't very good. This probably should've been expected as college teams have a tendency to play down to their competition at times, especially a week after the biggest game of the season (up to this point of course...). The good news for Clemson fans is, I'm still a believer in these guys and I honestly feel that outside of Alabama....Clemson might be the only team that has a chance to end Ohio State's winning streak and prevent them from capturing a second straight National Championship.

(3) Baylor (8-1): 34     (13) Oklahoma (9-1): 44

And thanks for coming Baylor!

Regular readers of this column shouldn't be surprised to see Baylor lose the first time they played a good team this year. Why? Because Baylor is "fool's gold" like I've said all-year. They are a good team (not a great team), that is extremely one-dimensional on one-side of the ball and their schedule has been an absolute joke this year. That's why it shouldn't come as a surprise that they ended up getting beat by the first team they played that is actually good. I haven't been high on Baylor at all this year and I'm pretty sure they went ahead and screwed up any chance of them getting into the College Football Playoff with this loss. It's pretty apparent that the CFP committee doesn't hold the BIG 12 in high regard and if Oklahoma State ends up losing a game...I highly doubt this conference will have a playoff team in the fight when it all begins in a couple of weeks.

(4) Alabama (9-1): 31      (22) Mississippi State (7-3): 6

If defense wins championships, the Crimson Tide should go ahead and clear their mantle....because the National Championship is on the way. If you haven't been paying attention to Alabama this season, you're missing out on one of the best defensive efforts we've ever seen from a team. This team is incredibly stacked on the defensive side of the ball and they just suffocate people. Outside of games with Ole Miss and Texas A&M, Alabama hasn't given up more than 17 points a game. They absolutely mauled LSU last weekend and this weekend, they made Mississippi State look like a high school team. Alabama is not only winning the SEC (their remaining schedule outside of a potential SEC title match with Florida is pretty damn easy.....), but they might be the only team with a shot to beat the Buckeyes.

If Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart doesn't end up getting a head coaching job after the job he's doing this season....something is wrong with the hiring process. If anyone is ready to be handed the keys to a college football team, it's Smart. Who wants him?

(5) Notre Dame (9-1): 28     Wake Forest (3-7): 7

My reaction when people say Notre Dame isn't a playoff team....

This is a very good football team people and there's a GOOD chance they sneak into the playoffs. Their remaining schedule is very winnable (Stanford is a tough game, but Notre Dame should handle them) and the Irish will likely have to rely on a little bit of LUCK to get the committee to vote them in considering they don't play in a conference championship game or anything like that. Something tells me the committee is going to end up loving them some Notre Dame when it's all said and done.

(6) Oklahoma State (10-0): 35      Iowa State (3-7): 31

What is with championship contending BIG 12 teams struggling with the weak ass Iowa State Cyclones? Seriously though. Iowa State put up a hell of a fight against Baylor a few weeks back, and this week they almost upset the Cowboys in Stillwater! If I'm an Oklahoma State fan, this game extremely worries me. I know I mentioned earlier that sometimes college teams will play down to an opponents level a week after a big game and that could've been what happened to OSU here...but as most college football fans know, the BIG 12 has no room for any kind of error if they expect to get a team in the CFP. OSU has a great chance to stamp their entry into the CFP if they can finish out the season undefeated. They have games left against Oklahoma and Baylor and if the Pokes can pick up wins against those teams, there's no reason they should be left out.

Yes. I just said OSU has a good shot to make the College Football Playoffs. Someone kill me now.

(7) Iowa (10-0): 40      Minnesota (4-6): 35

This is me patiently waiting for Iowa to lose....

Seriously though. If the Hawkeyes make the playoffs, something is wrong with the voting process. Iowa hasn't played anyone worth a damn outside of Wisconsin and Northwestern. That's TWO games against teams that people would consider "good teams". TWO! Get the hell out of my face with your playoff arguement Iowa. Go schedule a tougher non-conference schedule and then get back at me.

(8) Stanford (8-2): 36      Oregon (7-3): 38

Excuse me real quick......

This has been an odd season for the Oregon Ducks. After dropping games to Michigan State, Utah, and Washington State to start out the season, Ducks fans everywhere were hitting the panic button like it was going out of style. Something tells me Oregon fans are breathing a little easier today after their HUGE upset win over the Cardinal. If you didn't watch this game, you really missed how good the Oregon Ducks could have been this year had Vernon Adams been healthy all-year. That kid and this offense are absolutely humming right now and are playing their best football of the year. It's still highly unlikely that Oregon can win the PAC-12 (they need Stanford to lose another conference game still), but at least Duck fans everywhere have something to be proud of this year. Beating a top-10 team on the road gives this team a confidence boost going forward. Watch out USC. The Ducks are coming for you.

(9) LSU (7-2): 14     Arkansas (6-4): 31

After starting out the season on a hot streak, the LSU Tigers have hit a wall. It looks like that game against Alabama last week totally deflated this LSU team because they don't look like a team that is playing for much anymore. Arkansas on the other hand looks like a team that finally got the memo that the season has started. The Razorbacks have now won 4 in a row and could finish the season on a win streak that parlays them into a decent bowl game. LSU's CFP chances and Leonard Fournette's Heisman hopes though?

(10) Utah (8-2): 30      Arizona (6-5): 37

I'm confused by Utah. This is the same team that went into Autzen Stadium back in week 3 of the season and absolutely throttled the Oregon Ducks. Since that game, the Utes haven't looked like "world beaters" though. They have barely been beating mediocre PAC-12 teams and now have dropped two games to teams that they had no business losing to. So, what do we make of Utah? To me, this looks like a team that was pissed off about how the Oregon game played out last season so they were extremely motivated this year and whooped the Ducks ass. Why do I come to that conclusion? Because outside of that game against Oregon, the Utes haven't exactly looked that good and now they are done. Thanks for coming Utah. Please show yourself out. Don't leave the door open for too long though because we aren't paying to heat up the whole neighborhood......

(11) TCU (9-1): 23      Kansas (0-10): 17

TCU almost lost to Kansas??????

TCU almost lost to Kansas?????

TCU almost lost to Kansas????

(12) Florida (9-1): 14     South Carolina (3-7): 24

Florida = pretty good.

South Carolina = well, let's just say there's a reason Steve Spurrier decided to quit mid-season.

(14) Michigan State (9-1): 24     Maryland (2-8): 7

Oh. You thought Maryland had a chance against Michigan State?

(15) North Carolina (9-1): 59     Miami (6-4): 21

It's about time we start giving North Carolina some more respect people. What else do the Tar Heels have to do to be taken seriously? This is a good little football team over in Chapel Hill. UNC has won nine games in a row since losing their opener to South Carolina and they don't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. They still have huge games left against Virginia Tech and N.C. State, but if the Tar Heels can get past those teams, believe me when I say that they have a realistic chance to potentially knock off Clemson in the ACC title game if they are to meet there. I'm not saying I would pick North Carolina to beat Clemson, I'm just saying they have a CHANCE to do some damage if they can get there. I'm now officially on the UNC bandwagon. The offense is humming and they are blowing the doors off of their opponents. Good college football teams get better as the season goes on as everyone knows and early season losses can be more forgiven than losing in the later part of the season. Teams are supposed to improve as the season goes on and that's what North Carolina has done. It's an extreme long shot that UNC will make the playoffs, but if they get to the ACC title game and knock off Clemson....they HAVE to be in, right?

(16) Michigan (8-2): 48     Indiana (4-6): 41

That was a good effort Indiana. Had this been a Brady Hoke-coached team, you probably would have ended up with the upset win. However, Michigan is a different team these days for one reason and one reason only.....

(17) Florida State (8-2): 34     NC State (6-4): 17

#Unconquered

(18) Houston (10-0): 35     (23) Memphis (8-2): 34

We all knew this was going to be a fantastic close football game. However, did anyone expect it to be THIS close and THIS good? I'm not a American Athletic Conference guy at all....but these two teams are making that conference one to watch in the coming years. The Memphis Tigers are a good team, but they just aren't good enough. Unfortunately for them, their head coach Justin Fuente will probably leave for a better job this season (he's one of the best up-and-coming coaches in college) so they may have peaked as a program. As for Houston, they are kind of in the same boat. It's highly unlikely that even if Houston finishes the season undefeated, that they sneak into the playoffs. I just don't know if the CFP committee will put an undefeated non-Power 5 team into the playoffs. It's a long shot, but I don't think it's going to happen. The Cougars face the same problem that Memphis does down the line though. Their head coach Tom Herman is already a huge name on the coaching carousel and if his team finishes undefeated, you don't think a team like USC would come knocking? You know how hard it would be for the Houston Cougars coach to turn down the USC job if it's offered to him? Impossible. Enjoy it while you can Houston fans. I don't think it's going to last very long, but it's fun while it's here.

(19) Navy (8-1): 55     SMU (1-9): 14

Navy is a really good football team. Their match-up against the Houston Cougars on November 27 could be the biggest game in the AAC's short history. Is it possible to fast forward time so we can just get to that game already?

(20) Temple (8-2): 23      South Florida (6-4): 44

What the hell Temple? WHAT THE HELL?

(21) UCLA (7-3): 27      Washington State (7-3): 31

Washington State man.

WASHINGTON "FREAKING" STATE!

Are the Cougars the best team in the PAC-12?

They just beat UCLA. They beat Oregon earlier this season. They lost to Stanford by just two points.

I don't know.

I give up trying to figure out football.

(25) Northwestern (8-2): 21      Purdue (2-8): 14

Upsets Of The Week
(There are upsets every week in college football. These are the best upsets for this week)

-Oregon Ducks over Stanford Cardinal

I talked about this earlier and it's still just as sweet. Even though the Ducks likely ruined the PAC-12's chances of getting a team into the college football playoff, Oregon fans are still rejoicing over this sweet victory. It's always a good day when you beat a top-10 team on-the-road.

-Arkansas Razorbacks over LSU Tigers

Second straight week in a row that the Arkansas Razorbacks have pulled off an upset. Arkansas is getting hot at the right time while LSU is cooling off at the wrong time. Some teams have figured out while other teams have checked out. We know which is which here.

-Missouri Tigers over BYU Cougars

This probably wouldn't usually be considered an upset, but with all the stuff that has happened to the University of Missouri this week (students protests and their coach announcing his retirement due to health reasons), one would have to think it should be considered an upset. This football team had a lot on their minds this week and still came out and executed a perfectly constructed game-plan against a good BYU team. Well done, Mizzo.

-Arizona Wildcats over Utah Utes

Arizona hasn't looked very good this year, while Utah has looked like "world beaters" at times. So, of course Arizona would come out and beat the Utes. Utah is now 1-4 against Arizona since joining the PAC-12. It's safe to say that the Utes have themselves a little bit of a "wildcat problem". You might want to get that figured out.

-South Florida Bulls over Temple Owls

USF had no business beating Temple, but Temple is what Temple is. A team that isn't used to having the kind of success they have enjoyed this season. An eventual let down was inevitable.

-New Mexico Lobos over Boise State Broncos

Quick. Someone tell me when the last time New Mexico beat Boise State was. Go ahead. I'll wait.
