College Football Round-Up: Week Thirteen

Week thirteen of the college football season is in the books and it was a crazy week. It was such a crazy week that when I was watching the Ohio State vs. Michigan game, the camera panned to this...

What's odd about that is, I know the guy in the blue Michigan beanie to the right of the frightening Ohio State fan. We went to high school together and now he's been captured live on television while his favorite team gets a beat down from their rivals.

Everyone send Dan a gift today. Something tells me he needs it.

Anyway............

ARE YOU READY?????..................

I SAID............

ARE YOU READY??????????............

WELL...................

LETTTTTTTTT'S GET READY TO FUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLEEEEEEEEEEEE...........

Top 25 Scoreboard:
(A recap of all the action involving the top 25 teams in college football)

(1) Clemson (12-0): 37     South Carolina (3-9): 32

Did Clemson look great in this game? No. However, they still picked up the win and finish the season undefeated for the first time in as long as I can remember. Hats off to South Carolina who wasn't just going to lay down and let the Tigers walk all over them. They showed up for a fight against their in-state rivals and were THIS close to pulling off the upset. I'm not going to ding Clemson style points, because there are all sorts of variables that could go into a game like this.

Was South Carolina playing their best game of the season?

Was Clemson looking ahead at the ACC title game and potential playoff spot, so they walked through a rivalry game against a weak opponent?

Does anyone really care? Clemson is still undefeated, so who cares if they ALMOST lost?

All good questions. But the REAL question to come out of this game is.....

Would South Carolina be the best team in the ACC? They beat North Carolina earlier this year and almost beat Clemson.

Think about it.

(2) Alabama (11-1): 29      Auburn (6-6): 13

Alabama is good. Auburn is garbage this year. Not exactly sure what happened to Auburn this season (they hired Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator this off-season leaving many experts to believe Auburn was a legit playoff team), but they need to re-evaluate what they have going forward before things get really ugly.

Speaking of really ugly....

Everyone's reaction to that tweet from SEC nut-hugger Paul Finebaum....

It's one thing to work for ESPN and having to try and hide your bias towards a specific person or team, but Finnebaum doesn't even try anymore. A one-loss Alabama team should be ranked ahead of a Clemson team that hasn't looked bad all-year and has arguably the best player in college football on their team? Please Finebaum. Go home. You're drunk.

(3) Michigan State (11-1): 55     Penn State (7-5): 16

No team in college football has looked as good as "Sparty" has these last few weeks. This team is clicking at the right time and is one of the teams I wouldn't want anything to do with at the moment. Michigan State is now one win away from making it's first appearance in the College Football Playoff. They'll face Iowa next week in the BIG 10 Championship and the winner will get their ticket stamped to the CFP, where they will try and win the conference's second straight National Championship. Mark my words people....

Michigan State will crush Iowa next week.

There you go. Write it down. Take a picture....

Before we move on, Penn State head coach James Franklin is 0-6 against Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State since taking over and now alums and the current fan base are questioning whether or not he can cut it at Penn State. As of right now, all signs point to no.

(3) Oklahoma (11-1): 58      (11) Oklahoma State (10-2): 23

"Hey Oklahoma. You guys might be a playoff team, but we aren't sure. You got a big game coming up against your rival where the winner could likely get their ticket stamped to the College Football Playoff. You guys are going to blow it, right?"

Oh?

OK. We see you Sooners. We definitely see you. Welcome to the playoff.

(5) Iowa (12-0): 28     Nebraska (5-7): 20

There is a debate currently going on in the college football world that is tearing the sport apart. The debate is causing households to divide. It's causing friendships to end and it's even gotten so hectic that some people in the middle of the debate have considered joining ISIS because they're so mad. What is this debate exactly?

Are the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes really playoff-worthy?

First of all, I would say "yes". It's my personal belief that if you are in a POWER 5 conference in the college football world and you finish the season as one few undefeated teams left in the sport...you are definitely deserving to play in the playoff. Based on the fact that Iowa is one of the two undefeated teams left in the game, that alone should give them a spot at the dinner table come playoff time.

Now, I can also understand the other side of the argument though as well. That argument is that Iowa has played an extremely easy schedule and that's the only reason they are undefeated. If any other top-16 team played Iowa's schedule, they would probably be undefeated as well. Should we really reward the Hawkeyes for going undefeated when they played teams like Iowa State, Illinois State, & North Texas in out-of-conference games KNOWING how easy their conference schedule would be? In this new "playoff format" we live in, teams really need to start scheduling tough out-of-conference games to impress the committee. When is the last time the Iowa Hawkeyes played a tough out-of-conference game? Go ahead. I'll wait.

With all that said, I do believe Iowa should get into the playoffs. They are 12-0. They beat every team placed in front of them this season and that's a lot to ask. Now, Iowa actually WINNING a playoff game is a different story. Is anyone really going to take this team over Clemson, Alabama, or a Michigan State?

(6) Notre Dame (10-2): 36      (13) Stanford (10-2): 38

I knew going into this game that it had the chance to be the best game of the weekend, and it likely was. These two teams match-up extremely well with each other (the last 3 games have all been one score games) and we knew it was going to be a close one. This game literally came down to the wire and when you have to great teams playing for a playoff spot....good things will happen. It's almost a shame that one of these teams (if not both) could miss the chance to be in the CFP, because either one is good enough to go off on a little run and contend for a National Championship. Notre Dame has one of the best rosters in college football (although it's a little depleted from injuries) and they can play with anyone. Stanford has a great roster themselves, but they also have a guy on the team who might be the best player in college football. Christian McCaffery has taken the sport by storm this season and it'll be a damn shame if we don't get to see him and the Cardinal compete in the playoffs. It's going to take a lot of dominoes to fall in certain spots for Stanford to make the playoffs...but stranger things have happened in college football.

(7) Ohio State (11-1): 42      (12) Michigan (9-3): 13

Can we stop with the Ohio State hate yet? All year long people have been disappointed with this team and it's understandable. For as good as Ohio State looked on paper this year, they should have come out and boat raced the competition. That's just how big of a talent gap there is between the Buckeyes and the majority of the college football teams out there. However, all season long the Buckeyes have played down to their competition and it's caused college football "experts" everywhere to question just how good this team is. After close games against the likes of Northern Illinois and Indiana, people were looking at OSU as frauds. I never did though. This team was just way too talented to be as bad as people said they were. They are absolutely loaded with NFL players. They have one of the best head coaches (if not THE best) in the sport. And they play in a conference that has legitimately 3-4 teams that could play in the playoff and give other teams some nightmares. Ohio State is a very good football team that looked like they lacked any kind of motivation. They look bored if you will.

Enter the Michigan Wolverines.

You want to know how you get a team that's having locker room issues to band together and play like an actual team? Bring in their rivals. That's what happened this week when the Buckeyes stormed into Ann Arbor in a game that a lot of people thought was Michigan's for the taking. You want to motivate these Ohio State Buckeyes? Just tell them they don't belong. They heard that last year in the playoff and they heard that this week heading into the Michigan game. A motivated Ohio State team is still the scariest team in college football to me. People had better hope and pray that these guys don't make it into the playoff somehow. If they do, they're winning it all.

(8) Florida (10-2): 2      (14) Florida State (10-2): 27

#UNCONQUERED

#FLORIDAISOURBITCH

#WHOSAWTHISCOMING?

(9) Baylor (9-2): 21     (17) TCU (10-2): 28

A few weeks ago, Baylor was undefeated and looked like one of the best teams in the country. At the time, I wasn't convinced by them. I called Baylor "Oregon-lite". I said they are all flash, they have tons of athletes, they are great on offense, and extremely questionable on defense. I said I wasn't buying into what Baylor was doing and I was riding that train as far as it would go. Everywhere I went it felt like people were talking about how good Baylor was and that they looked like the best team in the country. Meanwhile, I'm over there giving people the side-eye, strongly convinced that they were "fool's gold" and people would regret that decision.

Excuse me for a second....

When you're right, you're right and sometimes you just gotta dance on a balcony with Beyonce. See you later Baylor. How about you start scheduling some tougher non-conference opponents and stop being such a one-dimensional team? Then I might start buying that "Baylor is good" jibberish that people start spewing.

(10) North Carolina (11-1): 45      N.C. State (7-5): 34

Anyone really buying North Carolina as a playoff team? Personally, I'm on the fence. Let's see what they do against the undefeated Clemson next week in the ACC title game before we start even mentioning the possibility of the Tar Heels playing with the big boys of college football. One thing is for sure, if North Carolina can somehow squeak into the playoffs.....did Larry Fedora just become the hottest coaching candidate in the sport? With job openings at USC, Miami, and South Carolina, is it possible that Fedora leaves UNC for a job at a bigger school? Don't be shocked if it happens.

(15) Navy (9-2): 31      (18) Houston (11-1): 52

This game featured two "pretty good" teams that come from a "pretty good" conference. Navy needed the win over Houston to earn a spot in the American Athletic Conference title game (in their first season in the AAC as well, which is extremely impressive), but they slipped up and blew it. Don't beat yourself up too bad though Navy fans. You guys have still had a VERY good season and it looks like you're building something special down there...you just ran into a team that has more talent and is better coached. The Houston Cougars are an underrated, extremely well-coached team that may not be able to beat any team in the country....but they can definitely play with the best of them. If Houston can come away with the win in the AAC title game, it should set them up to play in a pretty good bowl game this season with a chance to beat up a good team and get some momentum heading into next season. That all changes of course if a bigger school (USC? Miami?) comes along and pillages Houston coach Tom Herman who has become one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the sport, especially after what's happened in Ohio State and Houston this season.

(16) Northwestern (10-2): 24     Illinois (5-7): 14

No one cares. Instead, let's watch a cat beat the shit out of a dog using light sabers....

(19) Washington State (8-4): 10     Washington (6-6): 45

What the hell Wazzu?

You guys have had a pretty good season (especially after it started out with a loss to Portland State) and all you had to do to earn a spot in a decent bowl game was beat your rival Washington in the Apple Cup. Instead, you come along and "COUG IT" once again and now your probably going to end up in a garbage bowl like the Sun Bowl. So, instead of going to a beautiful place like San Antonio and playing a team like Baylor in the Alamo Bowl....you're probably going to have to go to El Paso (YUCK) and play a team like UConn.

(20) Oregon (9-3): 52     Oregon State (2-10): 42

Let's give Oregon State some props here. They are a 2-win team that could have come into Autzen Stadium and just laid down and let the Ducks beat the crap out of them. That's pretty much what happened in the first half of this game, but then the teams came out for halftime and this was an extremely different game. The Ducks had seemingly packed away their belongings at halftime and were focused on the road ahead, meanwhile Oregon State was ready to crash their party and crash the party they ALMOST did. Serious props to OSU head coach Gary Andersen for doing a terrific coaching job in this game. OSU looked like the better team in the second half and that was in part due to the coaching staff doing a tremendous job. It was a garbage season this year in Corvallis, but the Beavers fan base should be excited about what's to come with this team. OSU bottomed out this year and the only place they can go from here is up.

This game makes six straight wins for Oregon over Oregon State. Excuse me real quick...

(21) Ole Miss (9-3): 38     (22) Mississippi State (7-5): 27

We take a quick break from this broadcast to bring you live footage of Ole Miss fans celebrating this big win against their in-state rivals....

Snow is for pussies.

(23) UCLA (8-4): 21     USC (8-4): 40

Has there been a more disappointing team in the PAC-12 this year outside of UCLA? It seems like every year, the UCLA Bruins are picked to be the "surprise team of the PAC-12" and every year they come out and shit the bed. I just don't get it. Jim Mora is a decent coach. He's a FANTASTIC recruiter. But how come this team just can't seem to get the pieces put together and start winning on a consistent basis? Consistency is the one thing that UCLA is missing. For a team that has recruited top 10 classes the last few years, these guys are seriously under-performing under Mora. I'm not saying it's time for a change in Los Angeles, but I'm saying that if Mora's seat isn't hot yet....then it's probably time for the Bruins brass to tighten that leash.

As for USC, they have a shot at winning the PAC-12 title next week and who would have saw this coming a few weeks back when they were in all sorts of turmoil? After firing head coach Steve Sarkisian, the Trojans could have just called it a season and packed it in. Instead, they kind of got a fire lit under their ass from interim head coach Clay Helton and now they have a shot at a conference title (although I think Stanford mops the floor with them). There's a lot of talk right now surrounding the USC head coaching job. Some people think Helton has done enough to earn the job on a regular basis. Personally...I think the Trojans can do better than that. USC is one of the prime jobs in college football and there's no reason they can't lure a big-named head coach there in the same fashion Michigan did to Jim Harbaugh last off-season. Nothing against Clay Helton, but USC can do better than that.

(24) Temple (10-2): 27     UConn (6-6): 3

(25) Utah (9-3): 20     Colorado (4-9): 14

Speaking of that USC job.

Is it just me....or is Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham a dark horse to get the job at USC?

I'm not saying it's going to happen.....but if it does.......

Upsets Of The Week
(There are upsets every week in college football. These are the best upsets for this week)

-TCU Horned Frogs over Baylor Bears

This one shouldn't really be that much of an upset, but Baylor was ranked ahead of TCU going into this game. We all know how I feel about Baylor as well, so them getting beat by anyone really shouldn't be classified as THAT much of an upset. LULZ!
