NFL Round-Up
Week 1
The Scoreboard
(A recap of all the action from the past week in the NFL....)
*Due to time restraints, the Monday Night Football games are not included in The Scoreboard
New England Patriots (1-0): 28 Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1): 21
New England Patriots (1-0): 28 Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1): 21
Did the Patriots play angry this week? Probably. I'm sure Tom Brady has been eagerly anticipating the moment he was able to get back on the football field and put the whole "Deflate-gate" mess behind him. Now that all that garbage is over and done with, New England can focus on what they are good at and that's playing football. Brady returned with a passion this week, throwing 4 TD's and leading New England to a win over a good football team. Speaking of the Steelers, there are more concerns with this team than I first thought (especially on the defensive side of the ball). I picked Pittsburgh as a playoff contender, but after this game....I'm not feeling too comfortable with that pick.
Kansas City Chiefs (1-0): 27 Houston Texans (0-1): 20
This game wasn't as close as the score indicates. The Kansas City Chiefs came out and spanked the Texans this week. The only reason the score wasn't higher for Kansas City was because the Chiefs took the foot off the gas and the Texans experienced a bit of a second wind when they made a change at quarterback. At the moment, the Chiefs have to feel good about where they are at. They came in and whooped a good potential playoff team on the road and looked great doing it. The Texans have to be a little miserable though. They didn't do their QB controversy issue any favors by benching Brian Hoyer and having Ryan Mallett come in and play decent against a Chiefs defense that was relaxed. Buckle in Texans fans. It's gonna be a loooooooong one.
Green Bay Packers (1-0): 31 Chicago Bears (0-1): 23
Packers fans everywhere were sweating going into this season after the loss of Jordy Nelson in the pre-season. I was trying to relax them by saying you can put ANYONE in Aaron Rodger's wide receiving core and they would be fine. Why? Because Rodgers is such a good NFL quarterback that he can elevate mediocre guys into above average guys. Case in point? James Jones. Jones was sitting at home without a team to play on until the Packers called him last week, brought him in, and five days later the guy is catching 2 touchdown passes and Packers fans are breathing a little easier. See guys. Sometimes I know what I'm talking about......
Cleveland Browns (0-1): 10 New York Jets (1-0): 31
I'm trying, but I just don't care. Neither one of these teams are going to be relevant by year's end, so there's no reason to talk about them. Even though the Jets looked good, they looked good against the Browns. Don't read too much into that Jets fans.
Indianapolis Colts (0-1): 14 Buffalo Bills (1-0): 27
Here's our "Upset of the Week" in the NFL. What the hell went wrong with the Indianapolis Colts? I mean, we all know the Buffalo Bills have an outstanding defense, but the Colts have one of the best QB's in the league and just surrounded him with a plethora of weapons. A measly 14 points is all they could muster up? Good lord I hope this was just a bad week for the Colts. Andrew Luck was supposed to come out and set the world on fire and lead me to victory in numerous fantasy football leagues as I laughed my ass off all the way to the bank. This isn't exactly what I had in mind when I was telling everyone and their brother to take Luck with the #1 overall pick in your fantasy draft. Get your crap together Colts. As for the Bills...yes, they looked fantastic. I'm still pumping the brakes on them a little though, but I'm actually excited to see where they go from here. They look like they have the talent to finally give New England a fight in the AFC East. Isn't that right Rex?
Miami Dolphins (1-0): 17 Washington Redskins (0-1): 10
Speaking of teams looking to dethrone the New England Patriots from the AFC East. The Miami Dolphins were a good team on paper going into the season and after a big road win against a messy Redskins team, Miami has to be feeling pretty good about themselves. Even though Washington is a bit of a mess right now personnel-wise, they do have some good players and they will make you pay if you don't take them seriously. Neither team was great offensively, but these are two pretty good defensive teams, so if you were expecting an offensive juggernaut here, you're an idiot. This game really just boiled down to a Jarvis Landry punt return for a TD that turned the tide and gave the win to the Dolphins. Nothing much to see here.
Carolina Panthers (1-0): 20 Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1): 9
The Carolina Panthers are a good little football team. The Jacksonville Jaguars are a long way from being a good little football team. No one cares about this game unless the Jaguars upset the Panthers and we all knew that wasn't going to happen. Why? Because the Jaguars have NOTHING on offense. That's why.
Seattle Seahawks (0-1): 31 St. Louis Rams (1-0): 34
Whenever the Seahawks and the Rams play, it's a good time. These two teams can't stand each other and the games are always physical and always close. This game falls in line with the same game these two teams have played over the last three seasons. It took overtime, some more stupid Pete Carroll decisions, and a whole lot of magic from the Rams to give St. Louis the edge over Seattle in the NFC West to kick off the NFL season. Enjoy it while it you can Rams fans, because something tells me the standings will probably look a lot different come the end of the season.
New Orleans Saints (0-1): 19 Arizona Cardinals (1-0): 31
Welcome back Carson Palmer. I wasn't a big fan of either one of these teams heading into the season, but if Palmer can continue to play like he did against the Saints, that may be one prediction I'm going to regret. Arizona fans had just better hope and pray that he can stay healthy because this is a different football team when they have a good quarterback. It's a good one. Drew Brees was apparently too busy catching crocodiles in the wild with Bear Grylls in the off-season and should have been focusing on throwing TD passes instead. The Saints could have used the points.
Detroit Lions (0-1): 28 San Diego Chargers (1-0): 33
This was a fun game. The Chargers started out extremely slow as the Lions got out to an impressive 21-3 start, but then Philip Rivers remembered that he's one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League and turned it on. Rivers never gets the credit he deserves, but this guy is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and a guy I would take on my team any day. On the other side of the coin, yes, it was not an ideal game for Detroit as they had the Chargers on the ropes, but then let the game get away. Something tells me the Lions will look back at this game and shake their heads if they end up missing the playoffs by a game or two.
Tennessee Titans (1-0): 42 Tampa Bay Buccaneeers (0-1): 14
MARCUS MARIOTA!!!
4 TD'S!!!!!
HOLY CRAP, WHAT A DEBUT!!!!!
Put him in the Hall-of-Fame already.....
Cincinnati Bengals (1-0): 33 Oakland Raiders (0-1): 13
The Bengals are a good football team. They couldn't afford to start out the season with a loss to a team like the Raiders. Oakland has a bunch of young guys who are turning into fantastic players, but they are still a long way from contending in the NFL. Losing Derek Carr in the second quarter to a hand injury doesn't help either, but the Bengals are just on a different talent level than Oakland is. Not a good debut for Jack Del Rio, but it could always be worse.
Baltimore Ravens (0-1): 13 Denver Broncos (1-0): 19
Good news for Broncos fans. You picked up the win against my Super Bowl pick. The Ravens apparently can't play offense this year and the Broncos defense looks scary as shit.
Bad news for Broncos fans. Peyton Manning is done. I don't mean DONE as in he's never playing a football game again. But you remember the old Peyton Manning that was setting NFL records years ago and has been one of the best at his position for well over 10 years? You remember that guy? Ya, he's done. Watch the Broncos offensive line this week when they play the Chiefs on Thursday night. That could end up being a long night for Peyton if the offensive line's protection doesn't improve.
New York Giants (0-1): 26 Dallas Cowboys (1-0): 27
Leave it up to the Giants and the Cowboys to end the first Sunday of the NFL season with a bang. I won't get into too much detail about the entire game itself because most of it was utterly boring, but the end of the game was something else. After some questionable decisions by the Giants and Eli Manning, the Cowboys got the ball back with less than two minutes to work and drove down the field and scored the winning touchdown. It was an impressive drive from Romo and the offense (who were without Dez Bryant by the way) to get down the field and put the game away in the final moments. Some people still insist that Tony Romo isn't a "clutch player", but that's just silly talk. Just because an Alaskan native doesn't think the weather in Alaska is very cold.....doesn't mean it's not freezing ass cold. People's opinions are exactly that. Opinions. Romo is one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the NFL and if you don't believe me, look it up. The question now is, where do these teams go from here? Will Dallas suffer a letdown next week after this tough game, especially since they will be without Dez for over a month due to an injury? Can the Giants and Eli rebound from this heartbreaking loss? Does anyone really care outside of Giants and Cowboys fans?
