Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 9 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello & welcome to Week 9 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and since this is the Ultimate Football Blog that covers all types of football, I hope you will bear with me for a minute here since we need to talk about the College Football Playoff, the Top 25 & all the crazy stuff going on there.

As y'all know by now, the first rankings formulated by the playoff committee were released on Tuesday, and this is going to be a weekly thing until the end of the season. If this week's any indication, the NCAA, ESPN & everybody involved has a hit on their hands, as everybody's going bonkers & can't stop talking about who's in the top four, who's not in the top four, which conferences are represented, which aren't, who's too low, who's too high...it's a never-ending cornucopia of discussion & I couldn't be happier!

First of all, the committee got it right where the media & the coaches haven't, and properly included Louisville in the top 25. The Cardinals have one of the best defenses in college football & have lost two games on the road by single digits. They're not as good offensively as they were last year when they had Teddy Bridgewater running the plays, but the defense is even better now than they were when noted defensive genius Charlie Strong was coaching the team. Todd Grantham might not have been good enough for Georgia fans, but he's just fine & dandy for Louisville. Once Bobby Petrino gets his offense clicking (with Devante Parker back & Michael Dyer healthy it seems like that'll happen pretty soon), this team's gonna be a tough out for any team on their schedule...including #2 Florida State tonight!

So they appeased me. They did not appease people that were sick & tired of the constant focus on the SEC West. Mississippi State at 1, Auburn at 3 & Ole Miss at 4...I mean, I don't really see the reason for surprise here. Ole Miss might seem high because they just lost at LSU on Saturday night, but I actually give the committee credit there for not getting caught up in the moment and dropping a team several spots just because they lost last week. LSU's a good well-coached team getting right after some early bumps, and it's always tough to go into Baton Rouge for a night game & come out with a victory over the Tigers. I see no reason to punish Ole Miss for that, so good on the committee there.

What I think the people complaining are missing is that there's so so so so so so so so so much football left to be played. Mississippi State's going to play Alabama & Ole Miss. Auburn's going to play Alabama, Ole Miss & Georgia. Ole Miss is going to play Auburn & Mississippi State. And let's not forget about Alabama, or Georgia, who's going to win the SEC East & play one of these teams in the championship game. There's still a lot to be sorted out in the SEC, and odds are that these teams are going to beat each other up & somebody will emerge as the dominant team. You might have one other team that you can make an argument for. But 3 SEC teams are not going to make the playoff when it's all said and done...as long as some other teams take care of business.

If Oregon wins out, they're in. If TCU, Baylor or Kansas State win out in the Big XII, they're in. If Michigan State wins out they'll be in. Rest of the Big 10 need some things to fall their way but it's not impossible. I think Florida State can survive one loss, especially if it's at a ranked team like Louisville. So let's not sound the alarms just yet on the SEC Bias.

ESPN biases are nothing new, mind you. We've been complaining about the Yanks/Sox stuff for years. The New York Jets are only relevant because ESPN thinks they are. Duke basketball. LeBron James. I think the difference between the perceived SEC bias & other ESPN biases is that college football has always been decided by outside forces. The rest of those sports are sorted out through records & tournaments that ultimately determine an actual champion. College football has never been that way...until now. And even now we're limited to 4 teams. It'll expand soon enough once people realize how much money can be made. But I do believe the reason that ESPN's SEC bias has come under fire is because of the whole "College football doesn't actually have a real champion" thing.

The response to this has been interesting. I'm probably in a minority here, but I kinda respect Brent Musburger for saying that the SEC has the best teams & we should deal with it. Chris Fowler & Kirk Herbstreit keep hemming & hawing about it, which is how younger people deal with these things. Sometimes we're too afraid to take a position on anything because we're afraid of offending people. Brent's old & he doesn't give a fuck, so he'll call it like he sees it, which is the way that his bosses see it. I respect that. At least the guy takes a position, even if it's his bosses's position.

So the point I'm getting at here is that absolutely nothing has been decided yet. Thursday night's game will have a big impact on the playoff, as will Saturday's games, and every single game for the rest of the season. That's the thing college football has over other sports. Where does the regular season matter more?

Thursday, October 30

Saints (-2.5) at Panthers: The first two games in the column this week feature three members of the worst division in football. At least the Panthers & the Saints appear to be the top two teams in the division, though that might mean an 8-8 record wins the division. I think one of these teams gets there, and I think it'll be the Saints because after this week they still have five home dates on the schedule & a game at Tampa in case they slip up in one of those.

The interesting thing here is that the Saints have yet to win a game on the road. Sure, they looked impressive on Sunday night against the Packers, but haven't we all learned that there's a pretty big difference between Home Saints & Road Saints? That might be trumped by the Panthers, who have won one game in their last six outings and yet currently sit in first place in the NFC South. I've been saying for the past couple of months that the Saints will eventually take control & get themselves a playoff berth, and this week will help that along. Expect Cam Newton & the offense to play better this week than they did against the Seahawks, but it's not like that would take much. The Panthers defense gives up too many points here.

Sunday, November 2

Buccaneers at Browns (-6.5): I think the Bucs' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh in Week 4 has taken the place of Tennessee over Kansas City as the Most Inexplicable Result of the 2014 season. The Browns took advantage of a weak Oakland team at home last week & the result should be similar this week, especially now that the Bucs have sold off their useful defensive players. I have nothing else to add to this other than the AFC North cellar-dwelling Browns would currently be first place in the NFC South. It's been a bad year to have the NFC South in my divisional fantasy football league.

Cardinals at Cowboys (-4): Before we get into this game I think something important needs to be discussed that was completely swept under the rug by the NFL, ESPN & most of the people watching the Monday Night Football game between the teams from Dallas & Washington. Tony Romo left the game with what appeared to be a serious back injury suffered during a sack. His back's been a concern for awhile now, he was down on the turf for several minutes & Brandon Weeden was left to lead the team against DC. Not an ideal situation, but these things happen & NFL teams need to be prepared for them.

About 30 minutes or so later, Romo pops back up on the sidelines wanting to play. Now, I'm no doctor, but it seemed fairly obvious to me that something had to be helping the Dallas QB1 feeling good enough to get back in there not long after he stayed down on the turf several minutes after getting sacked in an uncomfortable manner. At some point, somebody should tell the player that it's for the best they not go back in that evening. The players have to be told that, because players want to play. I don't fault Romo, in whatever state he was in, for wanting to go back out & do his job & try to lead the Cowboys to victory. But somebody on that sideline has to realize that Tony Romo has probably been shot up with a pretty good amount of drugs to ease the pain he's going through. And in that state, he probably shouldn't be entrusted with leading a football team.

Hell, the owner was on the goddamn sideline because he likes being there.

But Tony Romo was allowed to go back out there. And anybody watching should have been able to realize that he shouldn't be out there. And Dallas lost.

As much as people claim to care about player safety these days, the silence amongst the majority of the NFL fanbase & people covering the NFL speaks volumes. Tony Romo was sent out onto the field without complete control of his faculties to kill or be killed, and the majority of the people watching & covering the NFL didn't give a fuck. That's all that needs to be said as to why the NFL has drug their asses changing things in order to make things safer for the player. The fans don't care. The media doesn't care. People like to act like they care when they hear about concussions & deaths & unseemly things like that, but in the heat of the moment when a football game needs to be won? Nah, let's send out the guy with the bad back that spent the last 30 minutes getting shot up with the drugs. And when he fails, let's talk about how he couldn't get the job done & how that doesn't make him elite.

Makes a lot of sense.

The Cardinals keep winning. I don't know how they're doing it with Carson Palmer & Larry Fitzgerald a good eight years after they would have been at their peak together, but it's a thing & it's a happening. I'm not sure they win, but I think they can at least make it a field goal game. Romo is expected to be back this week, as Dr. Jones expects him to manage the pain & man up. He better watch out, those Cards have a pretty rough defense.

Eagles (-2) at Texans: The Eagles are coming off a close loss in Arizona while the Texans spent their Week 7 beating on Zach Mettenberger. The Texans are 4-4. with one win against a team with a winning record. They really don't have much going on other than Arian Foster & JJ Watt, while the Eagles have all sorts of weapons. Darren Sproles might even be back. I think it'll be a close game like the spread indicates, but the Eagles should be able to win on the road.

I also think Nick Foles will have a good game, much to the dismay of people like Dustin James that want to run him out of town for a system quarterback.

Jets at Chiefs (-9.5): Michael Vick will apparently be starting for the Jets this week. It doesn't matter if Boomer Esiason starts for the Jets this week, the Chiefs are winning & covering.

Jaguars at Bengals (-11): Who Dey? The Bengals got back on track in Week 8 with a big win against the Baltimore Ravens, but they have to be careful about not overlooking the lowly Jags in advance of a Thursday night date with their divisional rivals from Cleveland. If they do, the Jaguars could get within 10 points here. I think the Bengals take care of business & the defense that's getting healthy again takes care of Blake Bortles & the Robinsons. That kinda sounds like an R&B group, doesn't it?

Oh, and AJ Green's probably going to be back. That should help things.

Chargers at Dolphins (-2): Miami's defense had themselves a day against Jacksonville. It was a good day to stream them if you're a person that likes to switch your fantasy football defense by the week. I don't really like them this week against Philip Rivers & the Chargers, as one might say they're a wee bit better than Blake Bortles & the Jaguars. Just a teeny tiny bit, yeah.

This is a pretty big game for San Diego heading into their bye week. They're on a two game losing streak right now, and while they have easy games coming up right afterwards with two teams that want to move to Los Angeles, their last five weeks look like this:

at Baltimore
vs New England
vs Denver
at San Francisco
at Kansas City

I'd be hard pressed to find a tougher ending stretch in the league than what San Diego faces, so it goes without saying that they need to win games like this one to keep from getting into a hole they can't dig out of. I think they get it done, as Rivers does his usual thing & the SD defense shuts down Ryan Tannehill & the Dolphin offense to ensure Chargers victory.

Washington at Vikings (-2.5): Y'all know I love Teddy Bridgewater, but watching this game rates just below dinner with the Kardashians on the list of things I'd like to do this Sunday. I imagine Washington's strategy will be to heavily blitz Teddy just like they did Tony Romo on Monday night...the Viking offense didn't do well against the Detroit or Buffalo defenses, but managed to keep the Bucs at bay on Sunday. Teddy also tends to do well against blitzes in general, at least so far. RG3 might be back this week, or he might not be back. I have a tough time seeing DC getting two straight road wins, so I'll ride with the Vikings and hopefully they'll make the Native Americans there protesting the Washington team happy.

Rams at 49ers (-10): The last time these teams played was two weeks ago in St. Louis. San Fran won by 14. I expect a similar result here, if not even more lopsided, so the 49ers should cover.

Broncos (-3) at Patriots: MANNING. BRADY. Two of the greatest QBs in NFL history hook it up one more time this week. If you're a football fan and you can't get excited about that, I'm not sure that you even have a pulse. When you take that off the table, you've still got two of the best teams in the league. Manning has thrived off of weapons like D & J Thomas, Brady's got the Gonk & gets stuff out of guys like Brandon LaFell. Denver has one of the best rush defenses in the league while New England's got one of the best pass defenses. Both teams are heading in on four-game winning streaks.

Simply put, this is big time.

As great as both QBs are, when comparing them it's tough not to talk about Brady's 10-5 advantage on the scoreboard. It's tough not to remember what happened last season, when the Patriots won in Foxburough during the regular season while the Broncos won the one that mattered in Denver during the postseason. That regular season game featured the Pats coming back from a 24-0 deficit to force overtime & get the win. We can only hope for similar drama this week.

But my pick comes down to this: Tom Brady is 10-5 against Peyton Manning, and you're giving me the Patriots and three points at home. Maybe there needs to be further intellectual analysis, but it seems pretty cut & dry to me.

Raiders at Seahawks (-15): The Seahawks kind of got back on track last week in Carolina. 13-9 isn't going to impress most of the offensive-minded football fans out in TVLand, but it's like I always say: They don't ask you if you won them-oh wait that's exactly what they ask you.

The question here isn't if they're going to win. That's pretty much a sure thing, at least as close to a sure thing as there is in the National Football League. The Raiders are downright abysmal in every facet of the game & 0-16 is in play. The question is if the Seahawks can put up enough points to cover the spread.

I think they do. The Raiders have given up at least 16 points in every game this season & the only time the Seahawks scored less than 16 was last week. And who says you don't use math when you're an adult?

Ravens at Steelers: Unless I'm forgetting something, which is highly likely, this is the first game of the season that's been a pick 'em at this point in the week. You might remember that the last time these teams played, the Ravens housed the Steelers 26-6 in Baltimore the game after they lost to Cincinnati. Hey, guess what the Ravens did last week...they lost to Cincinnati! Sounds familiar, right?

But now it's time to hop on the Pittsburgh Steeler bandwagon. Big Benny threw for 522 last week and now Steeler Fan is awake. It'd be nice if we could have a week where we don't have to deal with either Bandwagon Steeler Fan or Bandwagon Cowboy Fan going on & on about how Roethlisberger/Romo is the best QB ever or Brown/Bryant is the best WR ever or Bell/Murray is the best RB in the league or how nobody plays shutdown defense like their team or falling back on "Hey remember those rings we won forty/twenty years ago?".

And they think they won those rings even though all they contributed to the efforts were prayers to the porcelain gods & purchases of championship gear.

I still can't figure the Steelers out. They beat the Colts last week, sure, but that's a team that also got blown out by the Browns & blew a game at home to the Tampa Freaking Bay Buccaneers. If they can win this game, their next two dates on the road against the Jets & Titans mean that they'll most likely be 8-3 heading into their bye week.

Knowing the Steelers luck over the past forty years, that's probably what's going to happen.

Monday, November 3

Colts (-3) at Giants: The Colts had a pretty rough week in Pittsburgh & are continuing their road trip this week in East Rutherford. I think this week goes a lot better for them since the Giants pretty much have no secondary at this point thanks to injuries. Andrew Luck vs. a depleted secondary sounds good to me. The key for Indy is that they need to hold Eli Manning under 522 yards.

I think that's possible. Ride with the Colts on Monday night. The Giants don't have enough offensive firepower to keep up with Andrew Luck, even if Odell Beckham Jr. is apparently an Old Dirty Bastard. That is what ODB means, right? I can't keep up with the kids & their new-fangled words. This is Slammin' Stevie Cook signing off.

Last Week: 8-7

NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

Jeremy Lambert is back with his weekly NFL power rankings that are much better than ESPN's. Why? Because I said so.

Welcome to the Ultimate Football Blog Week Eight Power Rankings. Like most power rankings, this list is highly official and should never be doubted. If you disagree with it, you’re probably a moron.

No special commentary this week. I already wrote a fake trades column that can be found elsewhere on this site. What more do you want from me?

Onto the rankings:

1. Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady

It’s on once again. Both quarterbacks are on fire right now and if you check the fake power rankings on other sites, the Broncos and Patriots are probably both in the Top 5. Now the two greatest quarterbacks of my generation will meet for quite possibly the final time in the regular season.

2. Ben Roethlisberger

The Colts defense had been pretty good this season. They were coming off a shutout victory and only giving up 19 points per game. Then they ran into “Big Ben.” Roethlisberger threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns. He only had nine incompletions on 49 passes. Pretty good day.

3. The Final Two Minutes of Falcons/Lions

Let me set the scene: The Falcons, up 21-19, managed to burn less than 30 seconds off the clock despite having a 1st and 10 and the Lions only having one timeout following the two minute warning. The Lions got the ball back and drove down the field for a game-winning field goal. They missed it. Except that there was a delay of game. So the Lions got another chance from five yards further back and nailed the field goal to win the game. It was an absolute comedy of errors and I loved it.

4. Sack Celebration Injury

With his team down 48-23 in the 4th quarter and the Patriots playing their back-up QB, Lamarr Houston recorded a sack. Then he got up and did some stupid jumping celebration. In the process of his celebration, he blew out his knee. GOOD! I’d never wish an injury on any player, but I hate it when players celebrate big plays when they are losing by 17 or more points. Anyone who does that should be injured.

5. DeMarco Murray

Another week. Another 100 yards. He’s going to need at least one 200 yard game to break the record, but you have to admire the guys consistency.

6. Jeremy Maclin Gatorade Bath

I bet that would’ve felt better if the Eagles had won. If he doesn’t get an endorsement out of that then I’m never drinking Gatorade again. The commercial writes itself.

7. The INT Battle

With Geno Smith getting bench, this is Blake Bortles battle to lose. He threw another two picks this week and shows no signs of throwing to the correct team nay time soon. Andrew Luck and Nick Foles might be sleepers.

8. Sammy Watkins

Young Sammy would be higher if it wasn’t for his premature celebration that cost him a touchdown. He still had one touchdown and 157 yards on three catches.

9. Louis Delmas

The Jaguars defense didn’t play bad, but Dolphins defensive player Louis Delmas had an INT for a touchdown and a fumble recovery. It’s good to see “The Jaguars Benefactor” back in this spot after a week off.

10. NBA Season

Does your NFL team suck? Good news, BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS THIS WEEK!

11. NO MEANS NO!

Colt McCoy led the Redskins to a big victory over the Dallas Cowboys. So after the game of course every TV outlet wanted to interview him. But some security guard wouldn’t let that happen, shoving reporters out of the way to escort McCoy to the locker room.

20. J.J. Watt’s Sense of Humor

J.J. Watt is going to win the defensive player of the year. He further cemented his claim on Sunday with two sacks, a forced fumble, and a deflected pass. He also mocked Zach Mettenberger was a “selfie pose” after a sack because I guess Zach took some selfies showing off his sweet mustache and then ripped him for the selfies after the game. Seriously, J.J.? This coming from the guy who filmed a commercial where he’s dancing like an idiot? You got your sack, you did your pose, move on. Your team won. Mettenberger played well. Unfortunately he also plays for the Titans.

30. Drugged Up Tony Romo

Romo got hurt, went to the locker room, got drugged up, and should’ve lost the game in regulation if Washington didn’t suck.

32. Geno Smith

Geno Smith threw three interceptions in the first quarter and was benched. Then Michael Vick played so bad that I wouldn’t have been shocked if Geno was named the starter, but Rex Ryan is sticking with Vick. Until he sucks and Geno is back.

50. Percy Harvin in the Passing Game

Harvin complained that he wasn’t utilized enough in the passing game in Seattle. So in his first game with the Jets, he had 3 catches for 22 yards. Maybe things weren’t going great in Seattle, Percy, but you were winning. Don’t expect that in New York.

125. Johnny Manziel

Brian Hoyer played good enough to lead the Browns to victory over the Raiders. Looks like Johnny Football will be sitting on the bench a little longer.

150. The NFC South

The Saints victory was the first win for a NFC South team since October 5. Now the 3-4-1 Panthers meet the 3-4 Saints on Thursday Night in a battle for NFC South supremacy. No. Really. The winner of that game will be .500 and lead the division.

250. Sunday Night Games

Seriously. These are getting bad.

500. The Oakland Raiders

This spot is now reserved to the worst player on the Raiders during the week until they win a game. For the first week, I’m just going to give this spot to the entire team.

639. The Colts Defense

Enough said.

1,000. Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady Coverage

I’m already sick of it.

NFL Mid-Season Awards

The NFL season is officially half-way done and it's time for a quick review on who's leading the charge to take home some hardware at the end of the year. We still have 8 more weeks of action left before the playoffs start, so there's still along way to go. With that said, enjoy the mid-season awards and be sure to let me know on Twitter how stupid and wrong my awards are.....

Ultimate Football Blog NFL Mid-Season Awards

Defensive Rookie of the Half-Year:

Winner: C.J. Mosley (Baltimore Ravens)

Mosley was the 17th pick in this past summer's NFL Draft, but he's playing like he was the first overall pick. It shouldn't really surprise anyone that yet another Baltimore defensive draft pick has panned out with tremendous results. Mosley looks like he's been playing in the league for years now and hasn't really had a bad game yet. As a matter of fact, Pro Football Focus has Mosley rated as the 4th best ILB through the first 8 games of the season. That's higher than Luke Kuechly, Jerrod Mayo, Patrick Willis, and others. Not too bad for a rookie who was the 4th linebacker selected in the draft....

Runner-Ups:
1. Anthony Barr (Minnesota Vikings)
2. Khalil Mack (Oakland Raiders)
3. Aaron Donald (St. Louis Rams)

Offensive Rookie of the Half-Year:

Winner: Sammy Watkins (Buffalo Bills)

Sammy Watkins was my favorite offensive player in the 2014 NFL Draft and it looks like he will meet the high expectations placed upon him. After his first 8 games as a professional NFL player, Watkins is currently ranked 11th in the NFL in receiving yards with 590 yards and is currently tied for 12th place with 5 receiving TD's. Not only that, but Watkins is the kind of player that is a threat to score whenever he has the ball. Now, you must remember that rookie WR's usually struggle in their first season, but Watkins hasn't had a lot of struggles this far (other than show-boating and costing himself a TD) and he's had to work with some less-than-great quarterbacks. Watch out for this kid folks. He's the real deal and will only get better as time progresses.

Runner-Ups:
1. Kelvin Benjamin (Carolina Panthers)
2. Branden Oliver (San Diego Chargers)
3. Derek Carr (Oakland Raiders)

Comeback Player of the Half-Year:

Winner: Rolando McClain (Dallas Cowboys)

Rolando McClain was supposed to be done as far as being a professional football player was concerned. The former eighth-overall pick out of Alabama looked to be just another bust drafted by the Oakland Raiders after multiple run-ins with the law (he had 3 arrests in 3 years, which forced the Raiders to cut him). After his stint with Oakland was over, McClain was looking for another chance with the Baltimore Ravens, but that didn't end well either as McClain would announce his retirement from football just a month after signing with Baltimore. No one knew what was going on in McClain's head, but everyone knew the kid was a talented football player with a lot of problems. Just when it looked like his career was over with though, McClain turned things around, signed with the Dallas Cowboys and is having a fantastic year. The Cowboys' defense was supposed to be one of the worst defense's in NFL history (they looked AWFUL in pre-season and in training camp), but the addition of a focused and healthy Rolando McClain has turned that unit's fortunes around. The only question that remains is....can McClain keep his head in the game and stay out of trouble? That's what everyone is waiting to see.

Runner-Ups:
1. Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia Eagles)
2. Eli Manning (New York Giants)
3. Trent Richardson (Indianapolis Colts)

Most Disappointing Player of the Half-Year:

Winner: Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings)

The most disappointing player of the half-year thus far is a guy who has only seen action in one game this year, Adrian Peterson. Peterson is arguably one of the best running backs in football, when he's on the field. However, a few months back it was revealed that Peterson is a scumbag who abuses children (say whatever you want, but a parent should never use a weapon to hurt their child....NEVER!) and now, his football career is in question. This wasn't the first controversy surrounding Peterson though. As everyone remembers, a few years ago another son of Peterson's died at the hands of abuse and what did the country do? We automatically felt sorry for AP and everyone wished him the best. Then it was revealed that Peterson barely even knew the kid and didn't even take time out of his day to be a father to the boy, yet he was all but ready to suck up the sympathy everyone was handing out to him. I'm not a big fan of Adrian Peterson as a person, but the guy is a fantastic football player when he's on the field and that's why he's easily my most disappointing player of the half-year so far and to be honest with you, I don't see anyone taking his place anytime soon.

Runner-Ups:
1. Doug Martin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
2. Josh McCown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
3. Dwayne Bowe (Kansas City Chiefs)

Worst Coach of the Half-Year:

Winner: Dennis Allen (Oakland Raiders)

Dennis Allen was so bad this year, he was the first coach released by his team and he couldn't even make it to the mid-season. Allen isn't entirely to blame though as the Raiders roster is so bad that I'm not even sure Bill Belichick could win 3 games with them.

Runner-Ups:
1. Rex Ryan (New York Jets)
2. Mike Smith (Atlanta Falcons)
3. Lovie Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Best Coach of the Half-Year:

Winner: Bruce Arians (Arizona Cardinals)

The Arizona Cardinals weren't expected to be in first place in the very-tough NFC West, yet here they are sitting at 6-1 as we head into the second half of the season. How are the Cardinals doing this? Very good coaching, that's how. Arians was never supposed to be an NFL head coach, yet he was put into a temporary role in Indianapolis while head coach Chuck Pagano was out fighting cancer, and he led the Colts to a 9-3 record in what was one of the biggest turn-arounds in NFL history. Arians is showing that his time with the Colts wasn't a fluke as he's got a Carson Palmer-led Cardinals team in a great position to not only win the NFC West, but potentially contend for a Super Bowl. Not bad for a guy who was never supposed to be an NFL head coach.

Runner-Ups:
1. Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys)
2. Bill Belichick (New England Patriots)
3. John Fox (Denver Broncos)

Most Shocking Worst Team of the Half-Year:

Winner: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not a good football team last season. However, the off-season these guys had this summer got the fan base excited once again and NFL experts predicted that Tampa Bay would be this season's "POP" team. That's what happens when you improve at both the head coaching position (Lovie Smith is a huge upgrade over Greg Schiano) and the quarterback position. The Bucs signed Josh McCown in the off-season after he had a great year with Chicago last season, but McCown has played like the guy who was in-and-out of the NFL for the past 10 years. There's a reason that McCown has been an NFL back-up and a CFL starter over his 10-year career and not an NFL starter and the Bucs found that out the hard way. The good news for Tampa Bay is, their horrible season has put them in a position to grab the #1 quarterback in the draft (who at the moment is Oregon QB Marcus Mariota) and if they can improve that position, than maybe....just maybe, next year will be the year the Bucs actually "POP".

Runner-Ups:
1. New York Jets
2. Chicago Bears
3. New Orleans Saints

Most Shocking Best Team of the Half-Year:

Winner: Arizona Cardinals

As I've already mentioned earlier in this column, no one expected the Arizona Cardinals to be 6-1 and sitting at the top of the toughest division in football at the mid-point of the season. The fact that the Cardinals have been depleted by injuries and have Carson Palmer as QB and are the best team (at the moment...) in the NFC, that's pretty damn impressive. Can the birds of the desert keep the momentum up and make a return trip to the Super Bowl? Part of me highly doubts it, but something tells me this team likes when people doubt them.

Runner-Ups:
1. Dallas Cowboys
2. Detroit Lions
3. Buffalo Bills

Offensive Player of the Half-Year:

Winner: DeMarco Murray (Dallas Cowboys)

One of the biggest reasons the Dallas Cowboys are currently sitting at 6-2 on the season and are looking at a potential return to the playoffs? DeMarco Murray. This kid has been absolutely lights out this season. Murray is currently on pace to break Eric Dickerson's single season rushing record. He has 1,054 rushing yards half-way through the season and it doesn't look like he's going to slow down anytime soon. The only concern I have is that the amount of carries Murray is getting could eventually slow him down in the last-half of the season, but we have to take a "wait and see" approach with that one. As of right now though? Murray is easily the best offensive player in the NFL up to this point....

Runner-Ups:
1. Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts)
2. Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers)
3. Arian Foster (Houston Texans)

Defensive Player of the Half-Year:

Winner: J.J. Watt (Houston Texans)

This one was an easy one to give away. J.J. Watt is easily the most talented defensive player in the NFL and I don't know how he does it, but it seems like he continues to improve year-after-year. Once the Texans get Jadeveon Clowney back and healthy, their defense has a legit shot at becoming the most dangerous unit in the NFL and it all starts and begins with Watt. When it's all said and done, it wouldn't surprise me if we are talking about Watt being the best defensive player to ever play in the NFL. This guy is just a beast people and it seems like he never has an off-week. Pure definition of "NFL stud".

Runner-Ups:
1. Justin Houston (Kansas City Chiefs)
2. Lavonte David (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
3. Luke Kuechly (Carolina Panthers)

Worst Team of the Half-Year:

Winner: Oakland Raiders

The Raiders are the only winless team left in the NFL and I'm going to be honest with you here....I don't know if they will win a game this season. Look at their remaining schedule. They play @ Seattle, Denver, @ San Diego, Kansas City, @ St. Louis, San Francisco, @ Kansas City, Buffalo, and then @ Denver. Is there a realistic winnable game on that schedule outside of maybe sneaking one by St. Louis or Buffalo? Watch this team folks. We may have an 0-16 team in front of our very eyes.

Runner-Ups:
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2. New York Jets
3. Jacksonville Jaguars

Best Team of the Half-Year:

Winner: Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are the best team in football right now. They are easily the most complete team in the NFL on both sides of the ball and this looks like the year the Super Bowl trophy makes a return to the Mile High city. Denver is currently sitting at 6-1 on the season and I honestly don't know if these guy's will lose another game before the playoff's arrive. I fully expect to see this team in the Super Bowl again this season, only this time I expect the result will be different. The Broncos added a lot of pieces in the off-season and those pieces appear to be paying off in big ways. Will this be the year the Broncos re-capture the Lombardi Trophy and Peyton Manning rides off into the sunset (where he will eventually poke his head out again as an NFL coach....)? It sure looks that way to this guy.

Runner-Ups:
1. Arizona Cardinals
2. New England Patriots
3. Dallas Cowboys

MVP:

Winner: Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts)

In my opinion, the MVP award should be given out to a guy who, if you took that player off that team....that team would look entirely different. In my opinion, the guy who fits that mold to perfection is none other than Andrew Luck. Can you imagine what the Colts would look like if they hadn't had lucked into Luck? From a pure talent perspective, the Colts aren't a good football team. However, Andrew Luck is such a dynamic player that he himself makes this team a legit playoff contender. Remember what happened the year before Luck arrived in Indy? The Colts were 1-15 and made the playoffs the next year with a rookie QB. People say I have a "man crush" on Luck and I'm not afraid to admit it. I've watched him play since he was a freshman at Stanford and I could tell even then that he was going to be a stud in the pro's and he's shown that that's exactly what's happening. By the time this kid retires, I'll be shocked if he doesn't have 3-5 Super Bowl rings and is a first ballot hall-of-famer. Some people just have "it" and Luck was blessed at birth.

Runner-Ups:
1. DeMarco Murray (Dallas Cowboys)
2. J.J. Watt (Houston Texans)
3. Peyton Manning (Denver Broncos)

NFL Fake Trades!

My good friend Jeremy Lambert checks in to help make a mockery of the NFL trade deadline......

The NFL Trade Deadline is upon us. Unlike trade deadlines in other sports, the NFL Trade Deadline usually sucks as no one of importance is traded. The biggest reason for this is that NFL schemes are complicated and it’s tough to trade for a player, plug him into your system, and expect success in two or three weeks.

However, this year we’ve already seen Percy Harvin dealt to the New York Jets and there are rumors that guys like Doug Martin, Zac Stacy, Vincent Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, and others might be traded. They probably won’t be traded, but it’s fun to speculate.

It’s also fun to speculate about guys who definitely won’t be traded.

So here are some fake trades. I’m just going to assume that these deals all work within the salary cap and not do any actual research on that particular point. Also, for the most part, these are framework deals. I’m also going to assume that teams will throw in garbage players and draft picks.

New Orleans Saints trade Drew Brees to Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles

According to Chip Kelly expert Dustin James, Chip Kelly doesn’t really like Nick Foles. I don’t know if he’ll like Drew Brees any better because Brees can’t really run the read option either, but he’s still Drew Friggin Brees. And you know what he has that Chip Kelly doesn’t? A Super Bowl ring. If anyone can run an up-tempo offense, it would be Brees. And if the Eagles want to make a run at the Super Bowl this year, something they seem pretty poised to do, I’d definitely trust Brees over Foles.

As for the Saints, they aren’t going anywhere this season. Even if they win the crappy NFC South, their defense sucks so bad that they’ll be out in the first round of the playoffs. So why not cut ties the 35-year old Brees and bring in the 25-year old Foles and add a draft pick as well? Maybe Chip Kelly doesn’t like Foles, but he’s a proven NFL caliber quarterback and Jimmy Graham, when healthy, can make any QB look pretty good.

Seattle Seahawks trade Marshawn Lynch to Carolina Panthers for their entire secondary

Jonathan Stewart is the only healthy Panthers running back right now. Jonathan Stewart is never stays healthy, so I don’t expect that to last long. Seattle reportedly is going to cut ties with Lynch after this season, so they may as well get something for him. How about the entire secondary of one team? Did you see how well the Panthers secondary was against the Seahawks this past week? They could definitely teach Richard Sherman a thing or two. Plus, isn’t Pete Carroll some kind of genius? He should be able to mix and match those guys and put them in a position to succeed. I’d give you the names of the guys in the Panthers secondary, but I don’t know any of them since they never make any plays.

Arizona Cardinals trade Larry Fitzgerald to Detroit Lions for Calvin Johnson

Fitzgerald was the best receiver in the league a few years ago. Now that title belongs to Johnson when he’s healthy. Right now he’s not healthy and that’s why the Lions should trade him. They are winning without him and by adding Fitzgerald, they would actually be upgrading their receiving core. An on the field yet pretty ineffective Larry Fitzgerald is better than a sidelined Calvin Johnson. I think. And who knows, maybe being in Detroit will revitalize Fitzgerald. He has pretty good career numbers against them anyway. As for the Cardinals, this is a no-brainer. Even if Johnson can’t play, he’ll be at about the same value as Fitzgerald and if he can play, he’ll put that offense over the top.

New York Jets trade Geno Smith to Philadelphia Eagles for Mark Sanchez

THE SANCHIZE IS BACK BABY! The Jets need a competent quarterback who knows the system. One out of two ain’t bad. I’ve never been a believer in Geno Smith, but maybe he’ll fit into Chip Kelley’s offense. Probably not, but it’s not like Geno would be the starter unless Drew Brees or Matt Barkley or Chris Cosme get injured. This trade makes almost too much sense.

Oakland trades The Raiders to Jacksonville for The Jaguars

Would either city know the difference?

Washington Redskins trade Robert Griffin III to St. Louis Rams for Greg Robinson, Alec Ogletree, Stedman Bailey, Zac Stacy, Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins, Isaiah Pead and Rokevious Watkins

I don’t even know if all those players are still with the Rams, but if they are, how funny would this be if it happened? And wouldn’t the Redskins accept this trade if presented to them tomorrow?

Chicago Bears trade Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery to Kansas City Chiefs for Alex Smith and Husain Abdullah

Chicago Bears trade Jay Cutler to Cleveland Browns for Karlos Dansby

It’s time to blow up the Bears offense in order to improve their defense. First off, they trade Marshall and Jeffery to the Chiefs for Smith and Abdullah. I don’t know who Husain Abdullah is (I think he’s the former WWE star who got fired due to poor timing), but he tackles a lot and has an interception so the Bears could probably use him. In getting Alex Smith, even though he won’t have Marshall and Jeffery to throw to, he’ll still have Matt Forte and a big tight end. Sounds a lot like his current set-up in Kansas City. Plus, if nothing else, Smith doesn’t make a bunch of mistakes. Why would the Chiefs give up Alex Smith? Well Andy Reid is supposed to be some quarterback guru so I’m sure Chase Daniel or Aaron Murray could do a serviceable job considering they’ll have Jamaal Charles, Marshall, Jeffery, and Travis Kelce to utilize.

With the addition of Smith, the Bears need to get rid of Cutler. So they trade him to the Browns for more defensive help. Why do the Browns take Cutler? Because Brian Hoyer sucks, they are the Browns, and I’m currently pitching my reality show “Johnny & Jay” to numerous networks.

NFL Sunday Round-Up: Week 8

These last few days I have been the sickest I've been in awhile (I'm a hand sanitizer freak, so I rarely get sick). I don't know exactly what's going on (it may or may not be Ebola), but I suffer from year-round sinus issues and I live in one of the worst states you could possibly live in when you have these issues (allergies are a bitch folks). Therefore, we will get another week with more pictures than words in this column because let's face it, when you're sick, the only thing you want to do is kick back in your bed, eat soup, hate life, and not do anything else at all. The fact that I'm posting anything today shows my devotion to this blog.

Anyway, enough with the bitching. Here's all the action that went down this past weekend in the National Football League.

San Diego - 21 (5-3) @ Denver - 35 (6-1)

San Diego went from one of those teams that everyone was hot on, to a team that everyone is bailing on. Don't worry Chargers fans, I still have faith in your team. The Chargers are just going through a rough patch in their schedule (division games are never easy in the NFL) and they will get it turned around and are still a playoff team in my mind. Denver is Denver and as of right now, they are the best team in the NFL. I don't know if this team will lose another game this season, but I'm kind of hoping they win it all so maybe, just maybe, Peyton Manning will finally call it a career before someone snaps his neck in half.

San Diego Offensive MVP: Antonio Gates (5 catches, 54 yards, 2 TD's)

San Diego Defensive MVP: Eric Weddle (11 tackles)

Denver Offensive MVP: Emmanuel Sanders (9 catches, 120 yards, 3 TD's)

Denver Defensive MVP: Brandon Marshall (10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 pass deflected)

Up next for San Diego: vs. @ Miami (4-3)

Up next for Denver: vs. @ New England (6-2)

Detroit - 22 (6-2) @ Atlanta - 21 (2-6)

This was a weird game for numerous reasons. One, it was in London, England so it started at like 6:30 AM Pacific time. Basically, the only people watching this game on the West Coast were people with newborn babies and meth heads. Secondly, the Falcons got off to a 21-0 lead and it looked like Detroit was finally going to "Detroit" themselves....but no. A weird pattern of events and some absolute horrible head-coaching mistakes by Mike Smith led to Detroit kicking a field goal in the last few seconds to win the game. Avid readers of this blog know my distaste for Mike Smith as a head coach in the NFL. Sure, he's a good guy, but when have good guy's succeeded in the NFL as head coaches? Very rarely. Most successful NFL head coaches are egotistical assholes and Smith is the exact opposite of that. Detroit lives on to fight another day as their march towards the playoff continues. I'm still not entirely sold on them, but they still have 8 more weeks to impress me. As for the Falcons and head coach Mike Smith? Well, I got a glimpse into your future.....

Detroit Offensive MVP: Golden Tate (7 catches, 151 yards, 1 TD)

Detroit Defensive MVP: Jason Jones (3 tackles, 1 sack)

Atlanta Offensive MVP: Matt Ryan (20 of 27 for 228 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT, 108.3 QB rating)

Atlanta Defensive MVP: Kemal Ishmael (6 tackles)

Up next for Detroit: BYE WEEK

Up next for Atlanta: BYE WEEK

Houston - 30 (4-4) @ Tennessee - 16 (2-6)

Houston is a mediocre football team. Tennessee is a bad football team. This result shouldn't shock anyone. The good news for Titans fans is, even though your football team sucks, your new quarterback Zach Mettenberger not only looked decent in his first NFL start (he made some mistakes, but he's a rookie making his first start so those are expected), but he's got a great sense of humor and a look that would put any lady on her knees immediately.

Parents, lock up your daughters.

Houston Offensive MVP: Arian Foster (20 carries, 151 rushing yards, 4 catches, 22 receiving yards, 3 TD's)

Houston Defensive MVP: J.J. Watt (3 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass deflection)

Tennessee Offensive MVP: Zach Mettenberger (27 of 41 for 299 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT, 93.4 QB rating)

Tennessee Defensive MVP: Avery Williamson (10 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 1 pass deflection)

Up next for Houston: vs. Philadelphia (5-2)

Up next for Tennessee: BYE WEEK

Minnesota -19 (3-5) @ Tampa Bay - 13 (1-6)

These teams have a lot in common. By that, I mean they are both horrible. To be honest with you, they actually are pretty even keel teams. Both teams are working in new head coaches, both teams are playing with QB's that didn't start the season for them, and both teams have no shot at making the playoffs. Luckily for Minnesota, they have a bunch of young talent that looks to be putting it together. When these guys get more experience under their belts, they will have the potential to do some damage. Anthony Barr looks like a really special player and Teddy Bridgewater has shown that he can win football games as an NFL starter and can look good doing so. And luckily for the Bucs, they are still in the "Suck for the Duck" campaign and look to have a real good shot at landing Oregon QB Marcus Mariota (if they choose to....) in the NFL Draft next year. Of course, I still think the Philadelphia Eagles have a master plan up their sleeves to land Mariota in the draft next year as he's the perfect QB for the system that Chip wants to run in the NFL. It may not be long before we see this picture in Philly colors....

Minnesota Offensive MVP: Cordarrelle Patterson (6 catches, 86 receiving yards, 1 carry, 10 rushing yards)

Minnesota Defensive MVP: Anthony Barr (8 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflected, 1 TD)

Tampa Bay Offensive MVP: Mike Glennon (19 of 28 for 171 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 81.1 QB rating)

Tampa Bay Defensive MVP: Lavonte David (14 tackles, 3 tackles for loss)

Up next for Minnesota: vs. Washington (2-5)

Up next for Tampa Bay: vs. @ Cleveland (4-3)

Seattle - 13 (4-3) @ Carolina - 9 (3-4-1)

You're back Seattle fans! Well, not entirely back, but this was a much-needed win to get the Seahawks fans to back off the panic button a little. The Seahawks are a good football team that was going through a little rough patch there. I think the problem with the Seahawks is that expectations were set too high after the tremendous season they had last year. The parity in the NFL is tremendous and just because you go 13-3 and win the Super Bowl one-year, that doesn't mean you are just given the trophy the next season. The schedule is always more difficult and because of the NFL's salary cap rules, precious pieces will go away (I think the Hawks miss Golden Tate more than you think). The good news is, whenever you need a win, you can just play a team from the NFC South. Seriously, that division sucks. Remember a few years back when Seattle won the NFC West with a 7-9 record and made the playoffs? That's probably what is going to happen in the NFC South unless the Panthers or Saints can get it turned around and I seriously doubt either team can at this point. Hey NFC South....

Seattle Offensive MVP: Russell Wilson (20 of 32 for 199 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 6 carries, 35 rushing yards, 77.5 QB rating)

Seattle Defensive MVP: Bruce Irvin (3 tackles, 2 sacks)

Carolina Offensive MVP: Kelvin Benjamin (4 catches, 94 yards)

Carolina Defensive MVP: Josh Norman (6 tackles, 1 interception, 2 passes deflected)

Up next for Seattle: vs. Oakland (0-7)

Up next for Carolina: vs. New Orleans (3-4)

Baltimore - 24 (5-3) @ Cincinnati - 27 (4-2-1)

ESPN's Bill Simmon's called this game a "kitchen sink" game for the Ravens (which basically means it's a game where a team that's the better team will actually lose the game because they just don't care as much....or something like that). He actually said if this wasn't a "kitchen sink" game for the Ravens, than he doesn't know his "kitchen sink" games anymore. GOOD NEWS BILL! You were kind of right! Anyway, the Bengals really needed a win here to get out of the rut that they were in, especially now that they have earned the season sweep of the Ravens. What Cincinnati does from here is what's important though. They just beat a really good Ravens team and need to capitalize on this momentum to avoid sinking back into the hole that they were stuck in the last 3 weeks. As for Baltimore, forget about it and move on. There's a huge divisional game coming up against the Steelers that's pretty important as far as your standings in the AFC North are concerned. Lose that game and there is legit cause for concern in Baltimore.

Baltimore Offensive MVP: Lorenzo Taliaferro (7 carries, 27 rushing yards, 2 catches, 42 receiving yards, 2 TD's)

Baltimore Defensive MVP: C.J. Mosley (13 tackles, 1 interception)

Cincinnati Offensive MVP: Mohamed Sanu (5 catches, 125 receiving yards, 2 carries, 27 rushing yards)

Cincinnati Defensive MVP: Emmanuel Lamur (5 tackles, 1 interception)

Up next for Baltimore: vs. @ Pittsburgh (5-3)

Up next for Cincinnati: vs. Jacksonville (1-7)

Miami - 27 (4-3) @ Jacksonville - 13 (1-7)

What happens when you wake up on Sunday morning and tune into your local NFL affiliate and it say's "Miami vs. Jacksonville" as the listed game?

I feel your pain.

Miami Offensive MVP: Lamar Miller (14 carries, 78 rushing yards, 3 catches, 21 receiving yards)

Miami Defensive MVP: Louis Delmas (2 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, 1 TD)

Jacksonville Offensive MVP: Allen Robinson (5 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD)

Jacksonville Defensive MVP: J.T. Thomas (6 tackles, 1 interception)

Up next for Miami: vs. San Diego (5-3)

Up next for Jacksonville: vs. @ Cincinnati (4-2-1)

Chicago - 23 (3-5) @ New England - 51 (6-2)

Sometimes, you just need to get your ass kicked to turn your life around. It happened to the New England Patriots when they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 41-14 back in September. Since that loss, the Patriots are 4-0 and have put an absolute licking on some of those opponents. This week's game against the Chicago Bears was an ass kicking. Honestly though, these are two teams that are on different sides of the spectrum right now. The Patriots were a team with turmoil a few weeks back and people were ready to write them off, but they've turned things around and look like one of the top dogs in the AFC again. Now, the Chicago Bears find themselves in that exact same position. The Bears entire team could do themselves a huge favor and look at what the Patriots have done since that ass kicking from KC. The Bears are a playoff team that isn't playing like one on the field. There's still time for this team to get things turned around and a bye week next week is huge for them. The Bears will come off the bye and play a huge game in Green Bay that could ultimately define their season. A 3-6 record in November would be killer for a team with the playoff potential that the Bears had.

Chicago Offensive MVP: Matt Forte (19 carries, 114 rushing yards, 6 catches, 54 receiving yards, 1 TD)

Chicago Defensive MVP: Christian Jones (10 tackles, 1 pass deflected)

New England Offensive MVP: Tom Brady (30 of 35 for 354 yards, 5 TD's, 148.4 QB rating)

New England Defensive MVP: Darrelle Revis (4 tackles, 1 interception, 2 passes deflected)

Up next for Chicago: BYE WEEK

Up next for New England: vs. Denver (6-1)

Buffalo - 43 (5-3) @ New York Jets23 (1-7)

Usually I like to charge people if I give them advice. Jets staff and upper management, I hope you're reading this because this one is on me. Here's what I recommend you guys do with your roster from top to bottom. I'm talking from practice squad members all the way to the general manager.....

You're welcome.

Buffalo Offensive MVP: Kyle Orton (10 of 17 for 238 yards, 4 TD's, 142.8 QB rating)

Buffalo Defensive MVP: Preston Brown (9 tackles, 1 interception)

NY Jets Offensive MVP: Chris Ivory (13 carries, 43 rushing yards, 2 TD's)

NY Jets Defensive MVP: Quinton Coples (7 carries, 1.5 sacks, 2 QB hits)

Up next for Buffalo: BYE WEEK

Up next for NY Jets: vs. @ Kansas City (4-3)

St. Louis - 7 (2-5) @ Kansas City - 34 (4-3)

Ever since that awful loss to Tennessee in week one, the Kansas City Chiefs have been one of the best teams in the NFL. Their only losses since that loss were close games to the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers and other than that, they've been just downright tremendous. Now, forgive me for a bit for drooling over the Chiefs, but I'm not used to drooling over my favorite team. More often than not, I'm talking bad about Kansas City, but I have to admit that this team looks legit. When the offense can run the ball the way they ran it on the Rams, there are very few teams who can compete with KC. At the beginning of the year, I picked the Chiefs to finish somewhere around 7-9 or 8-8 but it wouldn't shock me to see these guy's get to 10 or 11 wins and sneak into the playoffs as a wild card team. If that happens, this will be the scene around my house.....

St. Louis Offensive MVP: Austin Davis (15 of 25 for 160 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 75.4 QB rating)

St. Louis Defensive MVP: Robert Quinn (5 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss)

Kansas City Offensive MVP: Jamaal Charles (13 carries, 73 rushing yards, 4 catches, 44 receiving yards, 2 TD's)

Kansas City Defensive MVP: Justin Houston (5 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 QB hits)

Up next for St. Louis: vs. @ San Francisco (4-3)

Up next for Kansas City: vs. New York Jets (1-7)

Philadelphia - 20 (5-2) @ Arizona - 24 (6-1)

This was one of the most highly anticipated games of the weekend and for good reason. It featured two of the best teams in the NFC and the game held up to expectations. The Arizona Cardinals are easily the biggest shocker of this season next to the Dallas Cowboys. Some people had the Cardinals as a playoff team, but no one expected them to be the class of the NFC West and sitting at 6-1 through the halfway point of the season. The Cardinals are an interesting team for numerous reasons and I just don't know what their ceiling is. Does anyone else really have enough balls to go out and say that a team quarterbacked by an old Carson Palmer is a legit Super Bowl contender? It sure looks that way, but the remaining schedule is difficult. The Cardinals still have to go to Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta, St. Louis, and San Francisco and have home games against the Chiefs, Rams, Lions, and Seahawks. That's a tough slate for any team, much less one that's going to have high expectations after getting off to a hot start. As for the Eagles? Well, I don't even live in Philly and I can hear the bitching from that fan base at my home in Oregon. Andy Reid isn't walking through that wall anytime soon guys......

Philadelphia Offensive MVP: Jeremy Maclin (12 catches, 187 yards, 2 TD's)

Philadelphia Defensive MVP: Nate Allen (4 tackles, 1 fumble recovery)

Arizona Offensive MVP: Larry Fitzgerald (7 catches, 160 yards, 1 TD)

Arizona Defensive MVP: Antonio Cromartie (5 tackles, 3 passes deflected, 2 interceptions)

Up next for Philadelphia: vs. @ Houston (4-4)

Up next for Arizona: vs. @ Dallas (6-1)

Oakland - 13 (0-7) @ Cleveland - 23 (4-3)

Oakland Offensive MVP: Derek Carr (34 of 54 for 328 yards, 1 TD, 86.0 QB rating)

Oakland Defensive MVP: Sio Moore (9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss)

Cleveland Offensive MVP: Brian Hoyer (19 of 28 for 275 yards, 1 TD, 111.5 QB rating)

Cleveland Defensive MVP: Joe Haden (9 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 passes deflected, 1 fumble recovery)

Up next for Oakland: vs. @ Seattle (4-3)

Up next for Cleveland: vs. Tampa Bay (1-6)

Indianapolis - 34 (5-3) @ Pittsburgh- 51 (5-3)

"Big Ben" Roethlisberger came to play and when he comes to play, there's very few QB's in the NFL who can compete on his level. "Big Ben" had a career day en route to leading the Steelers to a 5-3 record and Pittsburgh is now on pace to make a return to the playoffs after whooping a pretty good Indianapolis Colts team. This was a fantastic win for Pittsburgh because there's a very realistic chance these two teams will meet again in the post-season and this was a nice confidence building win for the Steelers in case that scenario does happen. Don't look now people, but every team in the AFC North is at least one game over .500....yes, even the Browns! That's probably going to be the most exciting divisional race to watch as we enter the final stretch of the season. My money is still on the Ravens to take the division, but it's hard to not like what we saw from Pittsburgh and Roethlisberger yesterday.

Indianapolis Offensive MVP: T.Y. Hilton (6 catches, 155 receiving yards, 1 TD)

Indianapolis Defensive MVP: D'Qwell Jackson (13 tackles)

Pittsburgh Offensive MVP: Ben Roethlisberger (40 of 49 for 522 yards, 6 TD's. 150.6 QB rating)

Pittsburgh Defensive MVP: William Gay (8 tackles, 1 interception, 1 TD)

Up next for Indianapolis: vs. @ New York Giants (3-4)

Up next for Pittsburgh: vs. Baltimore (5-3)
