College Football Round-Up: Week Thirteen

Week thirteen of the college football season is in the books and it was a crazy week. It was such a crazy week that when I was watching the Ohio State vs. Michigan game, the camera panned to this...

What's odd about that is, I know the guy in the blue Michigan beanie to the right of the frightening Ohio State fan. We went to high school together and now he's been captured live on television while his favorite team gets a beat down from their rivals.

Everyone send Dan a gift today. Something tells me he needs it.

Hitting The Recruiting Trail: PAC-12

The college football season is almost in the books, that means it's time to take another look at how every team is doing on the recruiting trail this season. College football fans know that in the sport of college football, you are only as good as the recruits you bring in. Teams like Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, and Auburn win titles because of one major detail....they are excellent in recruiting. If you look at the past National Championship winners in college football, they all have one thing in coming. They consistency have top-10 recruiting classes. If anyone tells you that recruiting in college football is overrated, smack them in the face. The proof is in the pudding. If you want to play with the big boys of college football, you had better have some of the big boys on your side.

With that said, here's how every team in the PAC-12 is recruiting thus far. Signing day is still over 3 months away and there is still plenty of time for teams to lose/get recruits, but here's how things are shaping up so far on the West Coast:

Arizona Wildcats:

Michael Eletise (OL, Hawaii) ****

Devon Modster (QB, California) ****

Khalil Tate (ATH, California) ****

Jake Burton (DE, California) ***

Bryson Cain (OL, California) ***

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 12 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello & welcome to Week 12 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and I'd like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you enjoy the turkey & take some time to reflect on the things you're thankful for in life. Like all the money you've won this year thanks to reading this column. Let's hook em up!

Thursday, November 26

Philadelphia at Detroit: We got two teams heading in different directions to kick off our Thanksgiving football day. The Eagles are heading so far downhill that my colleagues assume that Chip Kelly's going to be coaching the Titans next year. I'm not sure about all that, but it's definitely not looking good for Chippy. Whatever he tried to build here isn't working. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look like they're heading in the right direction and might be contending in the future (hell, as bad as the NFC is, they're contending for a wild card slot this season), but when they're blowing you out in your stadium...it's not a good look. Not a good look.

Meanwhile, the Lions have won two straight by narrow margins against the Packers & Raiders. I'm not really sure how it's happening, other than Matt Stafford & Calvin Johnson remembering who they are, and the lack of a general manager apparently being a good thing. Hey, the Bengals go to the playoffs every year and we don't have a GM. I'm just saying.

The one positive thing going for the Eagles here is that they didn't try really hard on Sunday so they should be ready to go for this one. Other than that, it's looking like a Lions win.

Carolina at Dallas: Panthers are 10-0. Cowboys are 3-7. Vegas is listing this as a pick em. Why? Pretty simple when you think about it:

-We still think the Panthers are frauds. We remember how bad the NFC South was last year, and we're waiting for Carolina to show us the team that they really are. They can't be this good, right? They're Carolina! They're Cam Newton and a bunch of guys! We can't name anybody on the team besides Cam Newton! And we don't like him because he dances, even though we love it when dorky white guys try to dance on the sidelines even though they had nothing to do with the play.

-We always think the Cowboys are a lot better than they actually are. They're America's Team.  They were really good in the early 1990s when I started watching & appreciating football. To me, and my peers, the Cowboys are a symbol of excellence because other than the 21st century New England Patriots they were the best team we've ever seen. They probably had the most talent. So much like older fans give teams like the Raiders & Dolphins credit whether they deserve it or not, we give the Cowboys credit.

The thing is, one of these teams is really good and the other might possibly fall bass ackwards into the playoffs if things fall into place in their crappy division. I prefer to go with the sure thing, which is why if you're giving me a pick em I'm going to take the undefeated Panthers.

Chicago at Green Bay (-9): OK, after two pick em games this is nice to see. Da Bears have been on a bit of a run lately, but you & I know that the Packers are R-E-L-A-X-E-D. They got right Sunday in Minnesota. No reason to think they have problems here.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Eleven

It’s Thanksgiving week, which means it’s time for turkey and HOT TAKES!

1. Packers Top Vikings

You knew the Packers would figure it out. Even though Aaron Rodgers didn’t have a great game, he still threw for two touchdowns and Eddie Lacy had his first 100 game of the season. While the offense played great against a very good Vikings defense, the Packers defense really deserves a lot of credit for holding Adrian Peterson to just 45 yards and a fumble.

The Packers and Vikings now have the same record, but the Packers hold the tie-breaker thanks to this victory. The NFC North is far from locked up. The Packers have a slightly tougher remaining schedule, but all signs point to the final game of the season between the two teams in Green Bay as being for the division crown.

NFL Round-Up: Week 11

It's "Thanksgiving Week" in the NFL Round-Up this week. That means it's time to reveal what every single NFL team should be thankful for this week. Myself? I'm thankful for this......

Seriously though. If you're a big fan of television shows like myself, I highly recommend catching up on season two of Fargo. The show has been absolutely incredible this season and is easily one of the best seasons of any television show ever (this season is currently tracking a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). There are four episodes left and you should get caught up while you can. Trust me when I say, you won't be disappointed. You'll actually probably send me a gift as a reward for telling you about it. ::insert thumbs up emoji::

Anyway, it's time to talk about some football.......

College Football Round-Up: Week Twelve

Week twelve of the college football season has left us. We now have about two weeks left in the regular season before everything becomes un-jumbled and all this confusion gets straightened out. Luckily for all of us, we have a playoff committee in place who is here to pick out the best 4 college football teams without any kind of bias at all......

OK. I lied. So sue me.

Pro Football Focus's Top NFL Players For 2015-16 (Defense)

If you read this blog, you know all about ProFootballFocus.com and their controversial grading scale they use to determine how a certain player performed during every game. These guys watch A LOT of tape on players and then use that information to give them a numbered grade depending on how well they played/didn't play in that particular game. It's a system that definitely has it's problems when it comes to certain positions (QB's), but there are certain positions (OL) where the grading system works extremely well.

With that said, it's about time to check in on who PFF has ranked as the best/worst players of the 2015-16 NFL season so far. Why? Because it provides an interesting topic to discuss and that's what we are all about here at THE ULTIMATE SPORTS BLOG!

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 11 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello and welcome to Week 11 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and apparently it's Wrestling Week here at the Ultimate Sports Blog! Well, you don't have to ask me twice to get in on that fun. After all, I made whatever reputation I have here on these Interwebs writing & talking about the pro wrestling. And any chance I have to get out of actually writing about stuff & just using gifs...well I'm definitely all about that.

Especially since the Bengals lost, my fantasy teams are going down the tubes and my picks here aren't going so well lately. Usually it gets easier to make picks as the season goes, but it's a lot tougher this year. Why? I don't believe in any of these teams! Other than New England & Carolina (and the Panthers are frauds or so I'm told), all of these teams have given us plenty of reasons to doubt them. Since I'm a pessimist and I'm prone to not believe in people anyway due to years of evidence, I don't need too many reasons to give up on a football team. If you don't believe in people, they'll never disappoint you.

On that positive note, let's hook em up! Rasslin style!

Thursday, November 19

Tennessee at Jacksonville (-3): Is anybody outside of the Titans & Jaguars' fanbases and the families of the players involved going to spend any time watching this game?

I guess take the Jaguars? Sure, whatever.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Ten

Week ten in the books, so it’s time for HOT TAKES courtesy of Jeremy Lambert!

1. Manning Benched

On the day where he broke the all-time passing mark, Peyton Manning was benched in the third quarter of the Broncos loss to the Chiefs. If that sounds embarrassing, it’s because it is. Manning is an all-time great quarterback on a team that had one loss coming into the weekend. So something had to go drastically wrong for Manning to get benched. Truth is, something has gone drastically wrong for Manning all year. He leads the league in interceptions with 17, adding another four on Sunday (Manning completed nine passes on Sunday. Five to his team, four to the Chiefs.), and hasn’t looked comfortable in Gary Kubiak’s system all season.

He’s reportedly been dealing with foot issues all season and now it’s come out that he has a partially torn plantar fascia along with a rib injury. Whether it’s injuries, old age, or a new system; Manning is clearly a shell of what he used to be. Last year, a shell of his former self was still a good quarterback. This year, a shell of his former self is no better than Geno Smith.

The Broncos have no running game and their defense is regressing by the week. If Manning continues to play this poorly, or if they have to start Brock Oswieler, this team is in some serious trouble. They’ll win the division, but they won’t get that first round bye in the playoffs and they’ll have to play at home, which should be a good thing, except that Manning is notoriously terrible in cold weather. And let me tell you, it’s pretty cold in January in Denver.

2. Packers Struggling

Losing to the then undefeated Broncos in Denver? No big deal. Losing to the undefeated Panthers in Carolina? Well, the Panthers are supposedly frauds, but that’s still understandable. Losing to the Lions in Green Bay? Now there’s a problem.

The Packers offense has struggled for 11 of the last 12 quarters. They’re getting nothing out of their run game and Rodgers is facing a ton of pressure every time he drops back.

Their biggest issue is Mike McCarthy, who I’ve always felt was overrated as a coach. I know he has a great record and has won a Super Bowl, but great quarterback play can mask mediocre coaching. And McCarthy is a mediocre coach. He constantly mismanages the clock and game situations, but is often times bailed out by Rodgers or coaches even dumber than him.

The Packers are still the favorites in the NFC because they have Rodgers, but they’re picking a bad time to slump. The Panthers NFC lead grows with every win and now the Vikings are a game ahead of them in the NFC North. The two teams play this weekend in Minnesota and what was already a big game became even bigger for the Packers. A loss this week and they’re looking at a wild card spot instead of a bye in the playoffs.

3. And Still…

Three teams went into the weekend undefeated and three teams walked out undefeated.

The Panthers had a relatively easy time with an overmatched Tennessee Titans team while the Patriots beat the Giants on a last second field goal.

Any questions about Cam Newton’s accuracy after the Packers game went out the window this week as he was 21/26 on the day with a touchdown. However, for the first time all season, the Panthers line played like everyone predicted they would play to start the year. They gave up five sacks and the run game didn’t really get going until the fourth quarter. Part of the reason the run game struggled was Newton’s poor decisions on the read option as he often made the wrong decision when it came to keeping it or handing it off. Still, Cam played well and the defense shutout the Titans in the second half. A win is a win.

The Patriots had a tougher time with the Giants. I thought the Patriots would win comfortably as I felt the Giants were being overrated considering that everyone was comparing them to the Super Bowl team that ended the Patriots last undefeated season. But Eli Manning and company gave them everything they could handle until they blew another lead with two minutes remaining. Like week one against the Cowboys, Tom Coughlin’s goal line play calling has to be questioned as he decided to throw the ball instead of run it. I understand throwing it once because you can’t go ultra conservative, especially when you have a terrible run game, but you still have to eat some clock in that situation and force New England to burn timeouts. Of course, it would’ve helped if the Giants receivers could catch the ball. Instead, they left the Patriots with too much time and Tom Brady did things that Lords do, which is lead his team to victory despite a mediocre day by his standards.

4. Ryan Downs Jets

Did you hear that Rex Ryan returned to New York this week and that he made IK Enemkpali a captain?

Oh yeah, there was a football game as well. Not a particularly good one either. The Jets turned the ball over four times but still had a chance to win because the Bills have Tyrod Taylor and a rather pedestrian offense. In the end, the Bills defense held up and gave Rex a victory he so desperately wanted.

Bigger picture, this was a win that the Bills needed in order to keep their wild card hopes alive. The Patriots are going to win the division, but the Bills and Jets are currently battling the Steelers and a bunch of 4-5 teams for one of two wild card spots. This win put the Bills in the driver’s seat. Their quarterback play isn’t good enough for them to make any real noise in the playoffs, but I never doubt a Rex Ryan led defense.

5. Bengals Fall

The Bengals entered the weekend as one of three unbeaten teams. And woke up on Tuesday with their first loss, dropping a 10-6 game to the Houston Texans.

Look, it’s one loss. They’re still 8-1 and the second best team in the AFC. They lost to a Texans team whose defense finally played up to their potential. How they react is what I’m more interested in. They travel to Arizona to play a Cardinals team that is looking to hold on to the second seed in the NFC. Not only that, but you know Carson Palmer will be looking to light them up. The trade that sent him out of Cincinnati and to Oakland was years ago, but Palmer lost his only game against the Bengals (when he was still in Oakland) and is no doubt looking for revenge now that he doesn’t play on a team that doesn’t suck.

The Bengals need to put this loss behind them and focus on a tough Cardinals team.

Quick Takes

*When did the league become so sensitive? On Sunday it was Cam Newton’s Dab Dance that irked the Titans and on Monday, Andy Dalton got upset about J.J. Watt calling him a Red Ryder B.B. Gun. As a Panthers fan, I get how people could hate Cam Newton. He does celebrate a lot when he gets a first down or a touchdown. I’m just happy that he’s enjoying football. Remember a few years ago when he would sulk and every criticized him for that? The guy can’t win sometimes (except on the field). As for Dalton, what Watt said was harmless. Dalton’s reaction was actually worse, bringing up “be a good role model” and “think of the children.” Really? If Dalton thinks Watt ruined some kids life because he called him a B.B. gun instead of a rifle then I’d love to know his thoughts on the commissioner and Jerry Jones.

*The Bears beat the Rams and the Rams decided to bench Nick Foles after the loss. They need to bring back The Truth Austin Davis. Even though Foles hasn’t played well this year, is it his fault for giving up 37 points to the Bears?

*Speaking of QB changes, the Browns are finally going with Johnny Manziel, something they should’ve done weeks ago. I didn’t watch much of Browns vs. Steelers game, but I did see Manziel escape a sure sack and then get jobbed out of a touchdown because the NFL doesn’t have pylon cams yet even though it’s 2015.

*The Saints fired Rob Ryan. I’m just wondering how Rob Ryan keeps getting jobs. He’s terrible.

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 10 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello and welcome to Week 10 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and we've got to get back on track here after a disappointing Week 9 where we actually lost some money. Let's get right to the meat of the matter & hook em' up!

Thursday, November 12

Buffalo at NY Jets (-2.5): This one's all about Sexy Rexy Ryan making his grand comeback to New Jersey some eleven months after the Jets canned him, and boy have we had some entertainment this week. Rex is taking shots at Ryan Fitzpatrick's beard, talking smack to Calvin Pryor about his son's Clemson Tigers beating Pryor's Louisville Cardinals earlier this season, naming IK Enemkpalki captain for the game even though he's only played 37 snaps this season...it's what you'd expect from Rex Ryan and why he has to be a coach in this league. Somebody needs to talk some smack, we can't have a whole league of coaches that say nothing of value.

Will it help the Bills on the field? I think what helps Buffalo's cause more is the fact they recently had a bye, so the Sunday-Thursday turnaround won't be as tough on them as it is on the Jets, a team currently ravaged by injury. Just last week we weren't sure Fitzpatrick would play, now we're supposed to believe in him on a short week? I think Rex & the Bills get the last laugh for now, which will be good for entertainment value.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Nine

Fresh from the week nine oven, get them HOT TAKES!

1.Broncos Fall to Colts

It was supposed to be easy for the Broncos. An undefeated team whose offense finally got on track and playing lights out defense against a struggling Colts team with a poor defense and a coach ready to be fired.

But it wasn’t.

Andrew Luck went mistake free against a Broncos defense that feasts on mistakes and Peyton Manning continued his average play with some untimely interceptions. The Denver run game, which everyone thought was fixed after last game, went back to doing nothing. It was a huge win for the Colts, who needed to prove that they could anyone outside of the AFC South, and a potentially huge loss for the Broncos, who may’ve lost their first round bye if the Patriots and Bengals keep taking care of business.

The Broncos defense is still a top five defense in the league, as long as they keep their fingers to theirselves, but the offense is actually being held back by Manning. He’s obviously not the same guy he used to be, and while he’s still really good, he’s a detriment to the team right now with all the interceptions he’s throwing. As good as their defense is, it’s a lot to ask of them to bail out Manning on quick changes. If they could get a consistent run game going, that would take a lot of pressure off of Peyton, but until that happens the offense will continue to struggle.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Eight

Week eight is in the books, which means it's HOT TAKE time!

1. Broncos shutdown Packers

Aaron Rodgers threw for 77 yards. It sounds like a boxscore misprint at first, but it isn’t. That’s how good the Broncos defense is right now. And it looks like the offense has finally caught up. Peyton Manning didn’t have a touchdown and he threw another interception, but he looked comfortable in the pocket and picked apart the Green Bay defense. On top of that, the Broncos run game finally got going, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns.

If these are the real Denver Broncos then the New England Patriots have a big challenge on their hands on November 29. Right now, it seems like the only team that is “legitimately undefeated” is the Patriots, so there’s no point in thinking that the Cincinnati Bengals can run the table. However, if the Broncos take care of business in the next three weeks (and it’s a favorable schedule) then the November 29 game against the Patriots could determine who gets home field in the AFC.

And with the news that the Broncos acquired Vernon Davis, Manning now has a reliable tight end to throw the ball to if his receivers can’t get open. Remember how good Julius Thomas (and really every tight end to ever play with Manning) was last year, how he turned that into a big pay day, and how you never hear from him in Jacksonville? And yes, I realize he was hurt to start the year but he’s played in three games, they lost two of them, and he wasn’t a factor in the game they won. Point is, Peyton Manning makes tight ends look good. And he’s about to make Vernon Davis look really good.

As for the Packers, they’re still the favorite in NFC, but that was a very discouraging effort. Very few defenses are going to be able to do to them what the Broncos did, but this performance is coming off the heels of a game where they gave up 500 yards passing. Before the weekend it was cool to make fun of the Panthers for being a fraud undefeated team, but the Packers hadn’t exactly beaten a murders row of teams either.

NFL Round-Up: Week Eight

Man, what a busy weekend I had. It was my daughter's second birthday and as every parent knows, those can be exhausting. I'm ready to put my head down on the couch, kick my slippers off, and relax. You know it's been a hectic weekend when you're begging to get back to work.

Wait.

What the hell did I just say?

Bear with me this week guys. I think we're in for something glorious.
