The 2015-16 College Football End of the Year Round-Up: Mountain West

The college football season is pretty much over, so that means it's time to go back and look at how each team performed this season. We will also take a look back at how I did on my predictions. Yes, unlike most sports writers, I'm not ashamed to bring up my predictions regardless of how awful they may have been. How do I prove to you guys that I actually know what I'm talking about? By looking back and seeing how my predictions turned out (and I have to admit....they're pretty solid).

So, with all that said.....it's time for the LAST College Football Round-Up for MANY MOONS....

Week By Week Transcript of Chip Kelly and Jeffrey Lurie Meetings

Exclusive transcript of Chip Kelly’s weekly meetings with Philadelphia Eagles CEO Jeffrey Lurie.

Off-Season

Kelly: I want full control of the team.

Lurie: I don’t know about that. You’re a good coach, but this isn’t college. You can’t just recruit the best athletes and plug them into your system.

Kelly: Yes, I can.

Lurie: No, I don’t think you understand how this works Chip.

Kelly: I AM ABOVE UNDERSTANDING! You will give me complete control.

*Waves hand*

Lurie: This isn’t Star Wars and you’re not a Jedi. But I am paying you a lot of money. So fine, you can have personnel control. But there will be consequences if you screw it up.

Kelly: Me so happy.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Sixteen

Only one week left in the NFL season, so get them Panthers-centric HOT TAKES while you can.

Panthers Finally Lose

The Carolina Panthers are no longer undefeated and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t think the team needed to be humbled or anything like that, I just wanted to get the first loss out of the way before the playoffs. Losing know just shows the team that they’re not unbeatable and that on any given weekend, if the team is better “on paper” and you just beat your opponents 38-0 two weeks ago, any team can be defeated. For the Atlanta Falcons, this was their Super Bowl, and the Panthers need to realize that when the playoffs start, every team will be as desperate as Atlanta was on Sunday.

I don’t even think Atlanta played a great game. More than anything, the Panthers beat themselves in just about every area of football. Cam wasn’t great, Mike Shula inexplicably went away from Cameron Artis-Payne in the second half, the receivers couldn’t get open, Josh Norman was slightly exposed, and the defense couldn’t get off the field on third down. This won’t happen every week. Cam is too good not to bounce back, Jonathan Stewart will be back and Shula will give him plenty of carries, the receivers will probably struggle to get open because they’re not good, no other team has a receiver like Julio Jones, and the defense is too good to struggle that bad on third down moving forward.

Selfishly, I wanted the Panthers to lose so they’d have to play the starters on Sunday against Tampa Bay since I’m going to that game and I want to see Cam Newton. I went to the Panthers game against Tampa Bay last year, but didn’t see Newton as that was the week where he was involved in a car accident. Thanks to their loss and the Cardinals win, they have to play Newton and the rest of the starters as they’ve yet to lock up home-field in the NFC.

The good news for the Panthers is that now, the pressure is off. The attention is no longer on them as most experts have switched their focus to the Arizona Cardinals. The Panthers were at their best this season when they were out of the spotlight and doubted by just about everyone. When the spotlight shown the brightest, they lost a bit of their swagger and personality. Part of that was the NFL’s doing and their handling of the Odell Beckham and Josh Norman situation, but the other part of that was the team just being a little too excited to be in this position.

NFL Round-Up: Week 16

The end of the season is near folks.

It sucks, but we must try and get through this together. If not for that, then what purpose do we have on this planet?

Screw introductions though.

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 16 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello & welcome to Week 16 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Joyus Festivus! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy Football! Whatever you're celebrating, hopefully it's covered there. We ain't really got time for chit-chat because this is arguably the most important week of the football season. Teams are trying to secure playoff spots or maximize their seeding, and fantasy football players are trying to win championships. So you know I'm pressed for time. Let's hook 'em up!

Thursday, December 24

San Diego at Oakland (-5.5): Everybody says that Christmas Eve football is a tough sell. They go on about how nobody will be watching because they'll be with their families.  I don't know about most people, but I know how my family functions go. Typically the men wind up in one room while the women & kids go to wherever the tree is. Here's what the men do:

-say hi
-open a beverage
-talk about what's going on
-run out of things to say
-wonder what's on TV
-find a football game to watch

This is what happens at every wintertime family function I've ever been to. Maybe things are different in your family, but in my family, we appreciate the NFL having a game on Christmas Eve for us to watch while avoiding the women and children. Even if it's two of the lesser teams in the league. We'd either watch this or a college football bowl game in Hawaii.

As for the actual game, I expect this to be pretty close. The Chargers showed signs of life last week, and it's not like the Raiders are blowing teams out. Even if they end up winning, it'll probably be by less than 5. Gotta give families something to watch, and the teams moving to Los Angeles next season need to look competitive.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Fifteen

Welcome to the fifteenth week of HOT TAKES! Before I begin, I must let you know that I, like Odell Beckham Jr., am not who I pretend to be. Every week I deliver HOT TAKES on the games that were just played, but the truth is, I don’t watch any of them. I’ve watched maybe a total of 10 minutes non-Panther football during the season. I can no longer keep up this lie. From here on out, if you want some REAL hot takes, tune in to ESPN First Take because they just make stuff up as well. But if you want some Panthers heavy talk with a sprinkling of random thoughts from around the league, then keep reading and stay tuned every week to THE USB.

Panthers Blow Lead, Still Win

It looked like the game was over when the Panthers went up 35-7 with five minutes remaining in the fourth. The Giants seemed lifeless on both ends of the ball and Carolina looked almost unstoppable. Then, Odell Beckham Jr. took matters into his own hands/helmet. After launching himself helmet first into the head of Josh Norman, the game changed. The Panthers stopped playing, likely feeling that it wasn’t worth it if Beckham was going to be allowed to take cheap shots with the only repercussion being a flag. The Giants took advantage of this lapse, putting up 28 straight points, including a game-tying touchdown by Beckham over Norman to tie the game. Fortunately for the Panthers, Cam Newton might actually be Superman this season. A led a calm two-minute drill to set-up Graham Gano for the game-winning field goal. It was much tougher than it needed to be, a theme for the Panthers this year, but at the end of the day they’re 14-0.

Beckham Nonsense

Josh Norman gets under the skin of just about every receiver he’s lined up against. He’s a small guy, but there’s a lot of fight in him. He loves to talk and most of the time he backs it up. He’s almost like the Steve Smith of cornerbacks. Beckham wasn’t the first receiver that Norman frustrated and he won’t be the last. The difference between Beckham and every other receiver Norman has checked this year is that Beckham took it extremely personal. He wanted to make an example out of Norman and he let his personal battle get in the way of the actual game. When his team was down 35-7, he felt he had nothing to lose.

Beckham crossed the line when he speared Norman with his helmet as the play was dying. That type of hit could’ve concussed or broken the jaw of Norman, yet no action was taken. The refs didn’t eject him despite his earlier personal fouls and Tom Coughlin, who will punish players for being a minute late, didn’t pull him out of the game. I’m sure the NFL will suspend him for a game, but what good does that do the Panthers? Beckham was key in helping the Giants get back in the game when he never should’ve been on the field.

Beckham is still a great receiver, but he showed himself on Sunday. Teams are going to look for ways to frustrate him and get in his head from here on out. They won’t always succeed because Beckham isn’t going to drop a sure touchdown on the first play of every game and not every team has a Josh Norman, but you can bet that teams will do what they can to get him off his game. Hopefully he responds by putting up the numbers he’s capable of putting up. But if he responds the way he did on Sunday, then there’s no place for him in a league that preaches about player safety.

CAMVP

Is it really close at this point? Six weeks ago everyone was comparing Cam’s numbers to the recently benched Colin Kaepernick, pointing out that there wasn’t much difference between the two except for their records. Since Kap’s benching (week nine), Cam has thrown for 19 touchdowns to only one interception and rushed for another two touchdowns. Need I remind you that his top wide receiver is Ted Ginn?

Carson Palmer is putting up huge numbers in Arizona and Tom Brady is doing Tom Brady things, but Cam is doing it with his arm and his legs with by far the worst receiving core he’s ever had and a bottom 10 receiving line-up in the league.

Other Panthers/Giants Thoughts

*Charles Johnson complained about the starters getting pulled against Atlanta saying, “What’s the point of having good pass rushers if you sit them at the beginning of the fourth?” Well, the “good pass rushers” played all game on Sunday and still managed to produce 0 sacks despite the fact that the Giants were down big most of the game and forced to throw the ball.

*For the record, I think Norman should’ve been tossed from the game as well. He did his part in instigating things with Beckham, and while he didn’t cross the line that Beckham crossed, the game would’ve been better off with both of them gone.

*ESPN trying to make a big deal out of the Panthers having a bat during the pre-game is hilarious. This is something they’ve done all season. It’s a symbol, not unlike a team having a battle axe or a championship belt on the field. Did the Panthers threaten him with the bat? Who knows, but even if they did, it doesn’t excuse what Beckham did on the field. It’s not like Norman or any other Panthers player could use the bat during the game. If Beckham was legitimately scared because the Panthers had a bat then that’s his own insecurity. After what he did to Norman, he’s lucky they didn’t use the bat on him.

*Ted Ginn is who is he. He can turn a 2-yard screen into a 20-yard touchdown and he can drop passes that hit him right in the hands or chest. Panthers fans have learned to accept it and live with it because he’s the best option we have at receiver. The biggest compliment I can pay him is that he doesn’t let the drops bother him. Part of that is Cam going right back to him after a drop, but it’s also a mentality that he has.

*I liked what I saw from Cameron Artis-Payne. He makes a few too many cuts, but he runs hard and has speed. I put equal blame on Payne and Newton for the Panthers lone fumble. Newton can hold onto the ball a little too long on the zone reads and Payne, unlike Stewart, isn’t used to it. I also put some blame on Mike Shula for even trying a zone read at that point in the game. Either run it and kill some clock or keep the ball in the hands of Newton and trust he’ll make the right throw. Even though the zone read worked well during the game, it just wasn’t the time for it, especially with Payne in.

*The refs deserve blame for letting the Beckham/Norman situation get out of hand. Flags should’ve been thrown long before they were and ejections should’ve happened. I’m also putting blame on Tom Coughlin, who actually stood by Beckham after the fact. I get it, the guy is, at worst, the second best player on the team, but you can’t preach discipline and then not punish the guy who is making undisciplined play after undisciplined play, including the helmet-to-helmet hit. Rivera could’ve pulled Norman out of the game, and he said he would’ve if Beckham had been pulled, but since Coughlin didn’t pull Beckham, I don’t blame Rivera for not pulling Norman since I highly doubt Beckham would’ve taken a seat even if Norman took one first.

*David Ayers Jr. sacked Newton and then did a little dance with his team trailing 28-7. The Panthers scored a couple of plays later. Nothing is dumber than a defensive player celebrating a big play when their team is down big.

*Eli Manning crying about Josh Norman “crying” is hilarious. I’m probably bias, but I don’t see how Norman was crying. He was upset with some plays that he had every right to be upset with. It’s not like he “cried” about the Beckham TD (although he wanted a flag during the game, but to me that was just showmanship that just about every receiver/defensive back does when they feel they’re interfered with). Next time Eli takes a cheap shot to the head or knees, I don’t want to hear a word out of him. “Odell took the high road,” said Manning, obviously not watching the game.

*Jason Pierre-Paul saying that Norman moved his head and Beckham didn’t launch helmet-to-helmet intentionally proves that the fireworks may’ve cost him his vision along with his fingers.

*The Giants were better off admitting that what Beckham did was wrong and accepting the punishment. For them to try and spin things only makes him and the team look foolish.

Random Thoughts Around The League

*Arizona scares me. They just lost Honey Badger for the year, which is a huge blow to their defense, but their offense is the best in the league. They handled a Philly team who had been playing pretty well with ease in Philly.

*I told you not worry, Cincy fans. A.J. McCarron is the real deal.

*What the hell happened to Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills? I don’t think Rex is a great coach, but he’s above average and is especially good with defenses. The Bills had a top five defense last year and are all the way down to #21 this year. I expect major changes to that defense in the offseason.

*Dustin James would like me to remind you that the Chiefs have won eight straight and are only a game behind the Broncos in the AFC West.

*I would like to remind you that the Chiefs are coached by Andy Reid and have Alex Smith at quarterback.

*Say hello to the Los Angeles Chargers.

NFL Round-Up: Week 15

Before we move on to some NFL action this week, I would like to take this time to apologize to all the Star Wars nerds. For years I've hammered on Star Wars if for no other reason than to be a troll. Was I a Star Wars fan? Not really. I had watched all the movies as a teenager and when all the prequels came out, I watched them....but I never really loved them. Until now.

I have to admit that I got a little bit caught up in the Star Wars hype for the new movie. So in an effort to prove that I don't like Star Wars, I decided to re-visit the old movies and I'll be damned....I actually enjoyed them. No joke. I thought I was going to hate the ever-loving crap out of them like I do most science fiction (especially space-related things), but apparently my tastes have changed over the years and I found the original trilogy to be highly entertaining. I'm officially excited to see the new movie and that's not something I could have said a week ago.

So once again. I apologize Star Wars nerds. It appears you were right all along.....

Anyway, it's time to talk about some football.......

NFL Hot Seats

The NFL off-season is rapidly approaching and NFL head coaches everywhere are either preparing to be fired or preparing for the playoffs. So, which coaches are actually in danger of potentially getting canned on the NFL's "BLACK FRIDAY" three weeks from now? I thought you would never ask!

Today, I'm taking a look at the chances of each NFL team's head coach potentially getting shown the door when the season ends in a few weeks. Some of these guys already have one foot out of the door, while other guys are already making plans for how the team can improve next season.

So, which coaches are in danger of getting fired?

I thought you'd never ask.

NFL Hot Seats

Arizona Cardinals

Bruce Arians

Record in Regular Season: 25-13

Record in Post-Season: 0-1

Winning Seasons As Head Coach of Current Team: 3

Losing Seasons As Head Coach of Current Team: 0

Hot Seat Temperature: 1 degrees. Arians has done a fantastic job since arriving in Arizona and isn't in danger of getting fired anytime soon. The only question with Arians is, why did it take NFL teams so long to hire this guy? He's obviously one of the best in the game as he has the Arizona Cardinals currently aimed towards a deep run in the playoffs.

Slammin' Stevie Cook's Week 15 NFL Picks!

Hi, hello and welcome to Week 15 of the National Football League! I'm Slammin' Stevie Cook, and here are my picks for this week!

Thursday, December 17

Tampa Bay at St. Louis (-1.5): Not a lot to talk about with these teams except for these awful uniforms:

I know the kids like the bright colors and that's how they decide which school they're going to these days, but us old people cant take this stuff much longer. The Bills/Jets game with the Color Rush nonsense gave colorblind people seizures, I don't know what this Hulk Hogan stuff it gonna do but it probably isn't going to be good. Why can't teams just wear throwbacks? Give the Bucs the creamsicle unis and give the Rams whatever they wore in Cleveland back in the 1940s, and let's have some fun that way, right? All this crazy futuristic stuff is for the birds.

I also like the Rams here on the short week and the fact they don't have to stare across at those ugly yellow uniforms that they'll be wearing.

Hot Takes: NFL Week Fourteen

Fourteen weeks down, three to go. Get them hot takes.

1. And Still…..

Everyone expected the Panthers to win on Sunday, but when you’re undefeated and playing teams fighting for the playoff lives, you always get the other team’s best shot. Well, if that was the Falcons best shot, then the game in two weeks shouldn’t be a problem.

Cam Newton continued to solidify his MVP case with 256 yards and three touchdowns, including two bombs to Ted Ginn, who actually caught the ball. While Newton had the offense rolling, the defense made life miserable for the Falcons offense as Josh Norman made Julio Jones look average while the rest of the defense played their part in shutting down Matt Ryan and company.

The Panthers clinched a first round bye with three games remaining and ended up resting their starters in the fourth quarter. Despite the blowout victory, not everything went Carolina’s way. Bene Benwikere, Carolina’s #2 corner, broke his leg and is done for the year. Meanwhile, Cam took a couple of big hits, Greg Olsen tweaked his leg, Jonathan Stewart hurt his foot, and Luke Keuchly had to get his ankle checked out. It appears that everyone is fine, but the regular season no longer matters for this team. It’s now about the playoffs.

NFL Round-Up: Week 14

Are you guys excited?

Of course you are. That's why you're here. But this week, you should be EXTRA excited, BECAUSE WE ARE JUST DAYS AWAY FROM THE RELEASE OF THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE!!!!

I'm so excited I can barely even write this introduction....

Net Worth Of NFL Franchises

Personal Capital created this infographic for the NFL's 2015 Regular Season. It's extremely interesting to see the net worth of some of the NFL franchises (the Texans are the fifth most valuable NFL franchise?!?!) and how it coincides with the results on the field (for example, the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills).

Check out their net worth calculator for more.

Top NFL Draft Eligible Prospects for 2016-17

Yes, it's that time of year again. College football season is winding down. The NFL has just about a month's left worth of games before the playoffs begin. After that? You know what it's time for.

THE NFL DRAFT BABY!

My favorite sporting event of the year! One of my favorite things about sports is the "team-building process". I absolutely love it and I get entrenched with it every year. It doesn't matter if it's the NFL Draft or if it's free agency. I become obsessed with every single bit of it. With that said, it's about time to start pumping out some NFL Draft-related columns on the blog.

Up first?

Why, it's the top draft eligible prospects of course. With thousands of kids playing college football every year, it's almost impossible for the average football fan to keep up with who NFL scouts are currently talking about. The following is a list I've compiled all from things I'm personally hearing, things other experts are saying, or just my personal opinion from watching these kids play this year. Now, this is the first list of prospects this season and I fully expect this list to change as guys officially return to school and we learn more about each player from the NFL Combine and such.
